“Proper Yorkshire Welcome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

That's what I got when we walked through the door .... a Proper Yorkshire Welcome. The place is in the middle of nowhere, albeit next to Ribblehead viaduct station. A crackin fire, real ale, proper home-cooked food, perfectly good room (I stayed in 4), banter and craic with the staff who, I must state clearly for the record, are as daft as a box of frogs!
Stay there and join the fun.

My group of 5 stayed in the 6 berth bunk house for 3 nights. There was some confusion as we had booked the larger bunk house, we believe they double booked although it wasn't an issue. For £36 for the 3 nights you can't expect much, my only gripe was the springs digging in my back from the ancient mattress. We ate in the bar every night and the food was good value, very nice and large portions. We had some really nice walks. The owner did tell us that the bunk houses are about to be refinished so hopefully this includes the mattresses.

6 of us stayed here in October to do the 3 peaks challenge. Having read the reviews on here I was a little worried that I had signed the rest of the party up for some sort of dungeon - thankfully this was not the case. The bunk house we had is pretty basic and you are sleeping in fairly close proximity to your fellow guests, but it's clean, dry and I got two good nights of sleep. There was a sink, kettle, complimentary tea bags etc in the room and a cupboard with some plates etc in there. Toilet and shower room was clean.

Some of our party arrived late at the pub and the landlord stayed open a bit later so they could have a couple of pints. He also advised us to take the train back from Horton in Ribblesdale after climbing Pen-y-ghent which was a good move. He was very friendly and chatted to us about the fell-runners who race the 3 peaks. Food was grand and they also sorted us out with dessert even though we ordered it after the kitchen had closed in the evening. Good breakfast with proper loaves of bread, good full English or kippers available. The chef came and chatted to us about other things to do in the area on the morning we left. They didn't even make fun of my friend when he got a giant slice of bread stuck in the rotary toaster.

To be honest I think the people giving the bunk houses 1 star are being a bit soft and we found all the staff to be friendly and talkative.

Dropped on here for lunch when we popped out to see the viaduct. Although the place does not look like any of these modern Gastro-pubs from the outside the food was simply stunning. Well cooked and locally sourced, we would recommend to anyone.

We were a part of 2 adults and 2 under 6. The kids menu was not the usual fayre and included a desert and kids bag. I think they loved it as much as us!

The staff were friendly and chatty and even took the time to poky out a woodpecker in the beer garden.

I would recommend to anyone.

We stopped at the station after walking up Whernside feeling cold and peckish. We entered a warm cosy pub serving real ale. After much consideration, we ordered two double cheese boards together with 4 bowls of home made chips. Our choices were blue cheese (scrummy) - smoked goats (moreish) - ale and mustard (warming|) - Wensleydale (as you would expect) and two other flavours (that complimented the other cheese's. The releishes that were served with the cheeses were so good and diffrent that purchased a jar for home. The bread rolls were warm and soft. The cheese boardwith the chips were so satisfying that this was a perfect end to a perfect day.

We were just expecting a basic B&B but we're very pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome and general amenities in our rooms including very generous supplies of beverages & biscuits. The food choices were amazing with an extensive fish menu surpassing that of some of our local restaurants and the meals were delicious. We also partook of the packed lunches which again were plentiful and tasty. Our only quibbles were the general size of the rooms & ensuites, quite tight but that's only a minor detail. We would like to single out Karen for her calm approach even when extremely busy and her general humour, help & guidance. We did get good service from everyone we came in contact with. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Avoid the front rooms as you can be kept awake by people leaving the pub or chatting outside or woke...

We stayed here on our third night of The Dales Way. We thought the barman was joking when he said we had been given a room with a waterbed but it was true! Even with our dog we had the best room in the hotel. Dinner and breakfast was fine, and we greatly appreciated Karen's lift back to rejoin the path next morning. A great Yorkshire pub with lots of atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the viaduct
