“Fantastic food”

Great food, really great for a pub, excellent service and a great atmosphere. Will certainly be returning. Plus they sell ringwood bitter. What more could you want?

“The best Sunday lunch for quite some time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

My first visit; Sunday lunch on a summers day.

The Dog and Pheasant had been recommended so I thought we should sample its delights. Well known locally for good food and wine, parking can be a little busy but luckily there is ample parking near/on/over the green opposite, a short walk across the road.

Despite the busy time of day our welcome was warm and polite. Our table was near the bar in this beautiful old building. Drinks service to the table was swift and efficient and we were made to feel very welcome. A really good wine list accompanies all the usual beers and soft drinks on offer.

The Sunday Lunch menus changes weekly and includes all the usual roasts, good selection of vegetarian dishes and a well thought out children’s selection.

There is a focus on using local produce which really makes a difference. We had the locally reared roast beef which was divine. A generous portion of succulent beef cooked to perfection served with an aromatic and well seasoned jus, proper Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes as nature intended - crispy on the outside, light and fluffy inside. A parsnip puree added a texture dimension and tiny crisp parsnips crisps added a beautiful presentational twist.

Vegetables were served on the side and included deliciously sweet chartanay carrots, beans, cauliflower and braised red cabbage with the slightest hint of cinnamon. All were perfectly cooked and presented in generous portions.

The nut roast is well worth acknowledging - carefully prepared in house, full of flavour and texture and a million miles from the frozen and reheated version sold in some places.

The Dessert menu includes a few old favourites along with a local cheese board. A variety of dessert wines and ports are available.

All the desserts are beautifully presented and many include locally made sorbets and ice creams. Each was utterly delightful; the sticky toffee sponge gorgeously light and fluffy, swimming in a sweet puddle of sauce and accompanied by the most flavoursome salted caramel ice cream I can remember.

The downstair bathrooms are functional, clean and spacious but might benefit from a spruce up. When food is this good I really want to write about how stunning the bathrooms are.

Pricing has been carefully thought about - Sunday lunch is a pound or so more than similar pubs in the local area, and in my opinion well worth it. Other dishes are sensibly priced and if they are the same quality, offer good value for money.

The place gets very busy and pre booked a long time in advance. I recommend you book your table as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

The Dog offers great food, cooked well as opposed to fussy & faddy so called Gastro pub dishes.
This is top quality food, served by polite and professional staff; an absolute jewel in the crown of other - equally good - local pubs, and from my experience today I can well understand why this restaurant has such a good reputation locally.

We will not hesitate to return and very much look forward to our second visit as soon as time allows.

“Dissapointing...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2014

Lovely pub garden but disappointing Sunday lunch. Clearly we had been forgotten as other tables received their lunch before us, no apology and not worth the wait. Cold plates, average roast dinner but higher end price for a roast. Lots of pubs in the area so try one of them instead.

“Not bad if you can get served !”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014 via mobile

Nice pub in the countryside with fantastic outside seating which i am sure lends itself to summer al fresco dining.
Food is rather run of the mill but does the job albeit a tad over priced.
Spent ages stood at the bar with only 1 bar staff working on a busy Sunday.
Drinks not bad value ... Will be back to try this place in the Summer !

“Great family pub”

One of our favourite local pubs. The food & service is always great, but what we really love are the friendly Shetlands in the kids play area and the laid-back atmosphere. Fantastic on a sunny day.
