“Central Location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 December 2012

This hotel is centrally located which is good in one respect but if you are in one of the front bedrooms expect a lot of noise especially at night as it is surrounded by quite a few bars.

The room we had was big but the furnishings had seen much better days. The double bed was so hard and lumpy and I woke with terrible backache each morning. the bathroom was massive and new. It seemed strange that they concentrated on renovating the bathroom rather than the actual bedroom.

The pub area was as other reviewers say were pretty bad. It is a shame as it is a lovely building in a prime spot.

The staff we found were very friendly and helpfull. Breakfast was standard full english but unfortunatly swimming in fat.

We wouldnt stay here again as we found it overpriced for what you got for your money.

Had to book the hotel as others nearby were fully booked. I would agree with other reviewers that it is a disappointment - the public areas were dreadful, the Wi-fi was rubbish and the staff practically non-existent. The bar/pub had a builder/local atmosphere to it and the restaurant - despite having a variety of food on the menu - served up disappointing food.
With all the negatives out of the way I still felt okay. My room was spacious and warm, clean and comfortable. My 4 night stay went fine. It is a good enough hotel for tradesmen to stay over but not families or business.

Stayed here a few times in the last couple of years, latest Dec 12.
Ideal position in town, rooms a little dated, En Suites good. Some room can be noisy especially. Staff friendly, WiFi appalling especially when it is advertised that it is available.

Room Tip: 3rd floor have best rooms

Arrived at 9.45ish and there was no one at reception. The receptionist was in the bar and promptly came through and checked us in. Went to rooms, which were ok. Cheap drinks in the bar, however at 10.50 we were asked to go to our rooms although we were residents on this occasion. The next morning we went down for a 7am breakfast to be told the chef had not arrived for work, and no hot food was available, bearing in mind the price of the room included a full english breakfast, not just cereal and toast. The owner appologised and we checked out soon after. The hotel was in an ideal location, however diffcult to find on the one way system with a Sat Nav. Overall the hotel was tired and in need of a touch of TLC.

Room Tip: Do not have the room over the 8 foot

My wife and I stayed for two nights Fri and Sat 16/17th Nov.while visiting our daughter who lives in Godalming. We had not read any reviews so went with an open mind. We knew we had to change rooms for the second night to a family room as our room had been booked. Both rooms were generally very tired. There was mildew in the shower in the first room, room 20 and only one of the four wall lights worked, the carpet had seen better days and was stained. However although very disappointed we were resigned to put up with this, as all we really wanted was a good nights sleep having driven for 5 hours from Cornwall. It was then we began to notice the noise coming from outside. Shouting screaming, generally lots of noise from lots of people, which kept going until 2,00am, there was no question of being able to sleep and by then we were so stressed we were unable to sleep the rest of the night. We had already paid on the internet so moving wasn't possible. When we told the woman who runs the hotel with her husband she was well aware of the problem which apparently comes from two nearby pubs which stay open until 2.00am. She also said that she could not guarantee that the room we were moving to, room 8, directly above room 20 would not have the same problem. Here again only one of the 5 wall lights worked and there were loose floor tiles in the bathroom. There was noise again, but because of the position of the room the volume was much less, and we did get some sleep at last. Although there was lots of noise during the night of some guests running about and knocking on doors. When we arrived down for breakfast the police were there as apparently the noise during the night had led to one of the rooms being thrashed.
The fire info on the back of the doors in both the rooms we stayed in were left blank where information should have been filled in.Generally it feels the hotel is not in great shape, and there are not enough staff to run the place properly. All in all not a great experience.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 20 and 8, and any other rooms that side of the building, and don't expect perfection...

Located in the very Heart of godalming it's was very convenient for work, food good and well priced, staff polite and keen, breakfast excellent with a good choice, overall I'd stay again .it would be nice to see some tempting dinner bed an breakfast offers this always appeals to me so I know what the price overall i will be paying.
Small parking area but adjacent too large public car park just a bit tricky to find.

The Royal Hotel is very central, being situated on Godalming High Street. The room was clean with a comfortable bed. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel has a pleasant bar area. I paid £75 for one night in a single room(B and B),booked through Booking.com. The accommodation is quite basic for the price, but probably reflects hotel prices in general in the U.K. When next in the area I will try to find somewhere cheaper, but would certainly recommend this hotel.
