“Could do better............”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2008

Firstly we booked a family room for us and our two children aged 12 and 8, boy and girl I might add. Another 4 rooms were booked by other family members as we were in the area for a wedding. The room turned out to contain 2 single beds and a sofa bed which was obviously made for very thin people who are also very short. On complaining the the General Manager, Nick he was completely uninterested, he did offer us an extra room for an extra £98! Considering we paid £300 for 2 nights I was not happy. Had it not been for one of the lovely maids aquiring a campbed one of the kids would've been on the floor. Breakfast was slow and you never got exactly what you ordered, Mushrooms missing, tomatoes instead of extra beans. By the way if you do have baked beans you literally get a teaspoon full! My Brother in Law had a room facing the high street and had to buy earplugs to try and drown out the sound coming from the nightclub next door. We were not allowed to park our hired minibus in the carpark at the rear of the hotel because it is classed as a commercial vehicle by the land owner and we were told he'd clamp us, the hotel rents spaces from him, strange but true. The hotel however did reimburse our car park charges. On the plus side the rooms were lovely and clean and it is very nice in the bar area and outside. It's central and you have easy access to shops etc.

We stayed at the Royal Hotel last weekend, as we had been invited to a friends birthday celebration at the Bel & Dragon restaurant close by.

I was hesitant following the reviews on this site, and indeed the renovation work is still ongoing in parts of the hotel. The decor is not to my personal taste, but it is suitable for the environment.
The room we were allocated had everything we needed, and was clean and comfortable. We did not return until after midnight, so can not comment on the level of noise from the pub.
The breakfast was made to order the following day, and everyone was friendly and polite.

This is not my idea of a holiday destination, but for £98 for a double room on a Saturday night, it was cheaper than arranging a taxi. Good value for our purposes.

The hotel is currently undergoing substantial refurbishment. I stayed here with a colleague and we both stayed in newly decorated and furnished superior rooms - beautifully styled and redecorated, but the hairdryer in my bathroom did not work. There was also no telephone for me to contact reception about the noise from the room below, from around 7pm to 11pm, which I believe to have been the builders' social area. Did not feel safe enough to go down to reception to mention this in person. Feel that due to the building site areas of the hotel in which to pass, the price should have been a lot lower than the £85 I paid for my room and breakfast. Breakfast was disappointing - room smelt of beer and we had to ask for cereal dishes. The cutlery and crockery were also dirty and stained. Believe that staff may be coping as best they can under the circumstances, but I feel it would really be best if the hotel was closed until refurbishment is complete.
