“Wonderful Hotel, charming hosts”
Reviewed 5 June 2009

Had two nights at this hotel for a friend's wedding May 2009. Lovely hotel with lots of character, very well furnished with all modern touches we have come to expect (power shower, cable tv, etc). Wedding lunch and dinner buffet were held at the hotel and all food was exceptional and plenty of it. Hosts Paul and Nicky (actually all the staff) made everyone feel so welcome and they really couldn't do enough for us. Located right in the center of Godalming with shops, restaurants, bars and pubs all on the doorstep, I expected a little noise but didn't hear a thing with the terrific window insulation. A wonderful change to the chain hotels, albeit 4 and 5 star, where I usually stay when traveling. This is a hidden gem in a wonderful little town where I will most definitely visit again. Bravo to you all.

I needed to stay in Godalming overnight recently and chose this hotel because it was ideally located for my purposes and was very reasonably priced. It's not often that you get more for your money than you expected so I feel obliged to leave some comments.

On the plus side, the hotel is very clean and comfortable. The bedroom I stayed in was generous enough in size and well proportioned, as was the en-suite. It was nice to have a double shower cubicle with no shortage of water pressure. The en-suite was immaculately clean. Breakfast was well organised: I had cereal and orange juice, quickly followed by coffee and a cooked breakfast. I have to say that the breakfast was one of the better hotel breakfasts I've received. Lastly, but most importantly, the staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient.

There isn't much to complain about on the negative side. Parking is limited but I did manage to get a space when I arrived in the afternoon and later that night so it seems adequate. The only other minor issue I had was as a consequence of the hotel being located on the main street. It's a price you pay for convenience and the fact that the local council keep the town very clean, but expect to be woken by road sweepers early in the morning if you have a room at the front. The secondary glazing helps but next time I'll take some ear plugs with me.

This place is a little gem and I will certainly be staying here again the next time I'm in Godalming.

We stayed here on a Saturday night. Comfortable & full of character. We had a superior suite (Room 1) which was modern & tastefully furnished. It had a tiny balcony overlooking the High Street, large bathroom with seperate bath & shower. Friendly new management staff. Breakfast was hot and good quality but lacked organisation i.e. there was one milk jug between all tables & a breakfast menu would have been helpful. The breakfast room was too small for the number of tables (5 tables, poss 20 people). There is a nightclub very nearby and we could here it on and off until it closed at 2am. The revellers coming & going to it were louder still. A shame in an otherwise lovely quiet historic town & hotel.

Booked this hotel on the day of our arrival through Late Rooms so we got a very good deal - £65 for a twin room with breakfast on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year.
Our Room (no 12) overlooked the High Street but that wasn't a problem as it is double glazed and Godalming is hardly a town where there are raucous gangs spilling out from nightclubs at all hours. There was/is a nightclub next door I think, or perhaps it was just entertainment downstairs in the lounge, and when we got back to the hotel at 12.30am we could hear it but, wine crazed as we were, it didn't make us lose any sleep. Next morning when we went down for breakfast a chap was packing away his equipment which led me to believe it may have been him producing the music.
Being an old inn the Kings Arms is a veritable rabbit warren with rooms and corridors springing up everywhere and wonderfully uneven (but safe) floor, but the room we had was a treat. We opened the door to be greated by a wave of warmth on a freezing cold night, flat screen digital tv, very comfy beds, snuggly pillows, plenty of tea/coffee/hot choc making equipment & ingredients (including 2 packs of shortbread), a clean bathroom with the most amazingly large power shower. The room had obviously only recently been re-fitted but has been done to a very high standard.
Now to breakfast - the lowlight of our stay. Plenty of cereal to help yourself to from a table at the back of the room, butter and jams on that table too but surprisingly not on individual tables (one of the butters we got had seen better days - goodness knows how long it had been passed over for fresher ones), full English was adequate - only one rasher of bacon, two sausages, half a bland slice of fried bread, a spoonful of baked beans, half a large tomato, an overdone fried egg which was undunkable and two slices of toast. Then to the tea which came in a pot with enough water for four cups but only ONE teabag. Gnat's p is alive and well and living in the Kings Arms, Godalming.
Yes, I will, of course, recommend this hotel for the rooms, friendliness, cleanliness, but please, please, please I beg the new hosts to learn how to make a decent cuppa.

We were looking for somewhere to escape to from the city for the weekend - and The Kings Arms & Royal Hotel exceeded expectations in every way!

Recently restored and under new management (three days before we arrived!), this quaint little hotel is now in the safe hands of Tom and Celia - for whom it seems nothing is too much trouble. From the moment we arrived we felt as though they had welcomed us into their home.

Our room was beautifully decorated, and - in contrast to some of the earlier reviews of this hotel - the food and service was great!

We really cannot recommend this hotel highly enough, and would like to thank Tom, Celia, Phil, and all the new staff for their superb hospitality.

My mother and sister stayed here for a weekend this September.
The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel has been beautifully restored. The rooms are refurbished to a high standard and very comfortable.
The only slight problem was the service at breakfast which was rather slow. The usual condiments such as sauces were not on the table and trying to attract staff proved difficult.
Parking is fine with a hotel car park at the back.
My relatives loved their stay and would not hestitate to make a return visit to the lovey town of Godalming!

Firstly we booked a family room for us and our two children aged 12 and 8, boy and girl I might add. Another 4 rooms were booked by other family members as we were in the area for a wedding. The room turned out to contain 2 single beds and a sofa bed which was obviously made for very thin people who are also very short. On complaining the the General Manager, Nick he was completely uninterested, he did offer us an extra room for an extra £98! Considering we paid £300 for 2 nights I was not happy. Had it not been for one of the lovely maids aquiring a campbed one of the kids would've been on the floor. Breakfast was slow and you never got exactly what you ordered, Mushrooms missing, tomatoes instead of extra beans. By the way if you do have baked beans you literally get a teaspoon full! My Brother in Law had a room facing the high street and had to buy earplugs to try and drown out the sound coming from the nightclub next door. We were not allowed to park our hired minibus in the carpark at the rear of the hotel because it is classed as a commercial vehicle by the land owner and we were told he'd clamp us, the hotel rents spaces from him, strange but true. The hotel however did reimburse our car park charges. On the plus side the rooms were lovely and clean and it is very nice in the bar area and outside. It's central and you have easy access to shops etc.
