“An extremely comfortable and cosy cottage in a picturesque setting.”
Reviewed 31 October 2015 for a stay in October 2015

The Old School is an extremely comfortable and cosy cottage in a picturesque setting. The kitchen was very well equipped, and the lounge had comfortable chairs. It was all very clean and welcoming. We would not hesitate to recommend it to others, and to return there ourselves!

“Superb Host, wonderful location, cozy cottage!”

From Canada, My husband, myself and mum, had the pleasure of spending 3 weeks at The Old Schoolhouse, after our daughters wedding. The cottage is located in a small village with spectacular views, convenient for walking and driving to all parts of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and beyond. Peter our host was awesome! The fresh eggs from the neighbours hens and having milk bottles from an actual milkman again was Fab! He made us feel very welcome, like a home away from home.
The cottage itself has a charming cosy living room, with a lovely coal and wood fire, and a big eat in kitchen that is well equipped. The bedrooms do have low head room in places, so mind your heads and the stairs are a bit slippy. The cottage could do with a little updating, specifically the bathroom and the kitchen floor, which sunk in one spot in the corner, but then again it is an old character cottage, The larger bed was a bit hard and the bathroom could use a grab bar for getting out of the shower. Otherwise, we loved it and would recommend to others as a good value place to spend some relaxation time. -

Thank you Dan and Julie for your fair and objective review. It was a pleasure having you around. With regard to your specifics:
The dip in the kitchen floor is being repaired in November
The second handrail was fitted recently on the stairs to make climbing and descending safer
A grab handle for the bath and shower will be investigated.
Peter

Look at the previous reviews which sum up the place very well. If you are looking for a base for travelling to Sheffield, Manchester, Summer wine country (Holmfirth 6 miles away) then this is ideal. York is only an hour away. The scenery is breathtaking. Barnsley market is a must - so much good quality local produce there. If you like cask beer then follow the signs out of the village to Thurlstone which is on the way to Penistone and drop into the Huntsman. Sunday is roast day and they do food on certain other occasions. Not all week though as it is a "locals" pub with up to six beers on draught. Another great option is to follow the satnav to High Bradfield and the Bradfield Brewery ( satnav code is S6 6LG) to purchase stocks to take home, then on towards Loxley (1 mile up the road) to their own pub The Old Nags Head (S6 6SJ). Pie chips, mushy peas and a pint for £5.75. To be honest it was the best I have had for many years. Peter the owner will assist as much or as little as you want and he had suffered a couple of last minute hitches with heat and windows and in the extreme weather we were glad of his tips. He is on the case and these little glitches will be sorted very quickly. In no way did this detract from our stay. In all, we know the reviews before are all good and this one also confirms what previous have said. If you book you will see in the guest book at the cottage that the Bye family have been here 17 times so far. Enough said really.

“Fantastic stay, and the extra things Peter done for us made it a Birthday to remember”
Reviewed 9 December 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We have stayed before, and really love the place, came this time for my wifes 40th, and she did not want any fuss.
However i did not want it just to be another birthday, so just a few words to Peter, and he sorted out everything, Flowers, bubbly (even returned to shop to get the right one) fruit basket.
We also had our 6 month old baby with us, and evetrything we needed was there, everytrhing was thought off.
Fantastic Penine walks and views too
We will be back, you bet we will. Thank you Peter

What a brilliant cottage, great location and well equipped. I think Peter has thought of everything including the nice touch of the free range eggs, milk and bread. If you like walking, either serious or just strolling then this is the place for you, great scenery and the nights are so quiet, good for star gazing too. Don't want to praise too much as might not find a vacancy for our next visit.
