“One of the Best”
Reviewed 27 September 2010

Greyabbey is one of the best places to stay in and around Belfast and Strangford lough. Being originally from Northern Ireland, I have travelled all over ireland for the past 15 years staying mostly in Bed and Breakfast. I was fortunate enough to stay at the Retreat with my wife and I will tell you, it is one of the best I have ever stayed at. B&Bs are all different, but this one has everything you could ask/hope for. Quite location, great surroundings, great house, privacy, great, large, modern room.

The attention to detail was great. Nice linens, great bed, tv/dvd player and movies, large bathroom, fruit basket, bottled water, snacks, fresh milk. Absolutely great. You just don't find this degree of caring at most B&Bs.

The owners really treat you like a friend and really go out of their way to make you feel at home. They don't seem like someone who has been doing this for 20 years and treats you like just another guest. They will crack a beer with you and have a laugh.

The breakfast room and breakfast was superb. They do not cheap out and provide you with great quality products and variety. You will be spoiled. We travelled on to other B&B's and right away you can see the difference.

I highly recommend this place, it is worth every penny.

Great time. Thanks a lot guys.

We chose The Retreat as the men had business in the area, and it offered alternative therapy treatments aswell as your typical bed and breakfast one would expect. That way both parties were kept happy! From arrival we were treated with the ultimate hospitality, the couple could not do enough to make our stay any more pleasurable, they provided two breakfast sittings to facilitate the entire party, as the girls stayed behind they continually offered food and drink between treatments, which were sheer bliss (neither of us had ever had a massage that was so relaxing) and the food was amazing.
Greyabbey is a small quiet village, but we knew this by researching the area before we went, The Retreat offers 'you secluded accommodation in relaxing, comfortable and friendly surroundings' which is what they provide - for this reason I find 'Bradleys' review confusing as if he had of done any preparation for his planned stay he would have been aware of this and should not blame The Retreat for his poor research.
Will we return to The Retreat - most definitely it offers a venue to chill out, recharge your batteries, receive alternative therapies and good food.

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing break away from it all and pure relaxation is exactly what we experienced in our stay in the Retreat. From the minute we arrived, we were made to feel so at home and welcome by the couple who own the B&B. Our room was very clean, all mod cons, gorgeous ensuite, great views of the countryside and the bed was so comfortable, think we had one of the best nights sleeps ever, felt very refreshed the next morning. Both of us went for the cooked breakfast - an 'Ulster Fry' - without doubt one of the best breakfasts I have ever had cooked to perfection. This set us up for the day and we drove round the Ards peninsula, stopping at Ballywalter beach which is only 2 mins drive away for a lovely beach walk, then drove further down the peninsula taking in the sights until we got to Portaferry and called in to the Fiddlers Green for my husband to sample some Guinness. We returned to the Retreat and I indulged in pampering treatments, reflexology in the therapy room - sheer bliss. We are very glad we chose the Retreat to spend our anniversary in, wish we could have stayed longer, but will definitely be back.

This is the perfect place to forget about about everyday life and to relax. The people that own this B and B are so accomodating and did everything they could to ensure our 2 year old was well entertained, including offering to borrow dvds for him. The room itself is very modern with a tv and dvd player. The room is cleaned every day for you and sweets, biscuits, fresh fruit and beverages are provided along with fluffy dressing gowns which are perfect for relaxing beside the log fire with. The breakfast in the morning is fab, cooked fresh to suit you, with everything provided you could possibly want. The retreat itself is set in the country with beautiful views and only a 3 minute drive from the beach. This is like no other B and B we have stayed in, it truly is a home away from home and we can't wait to return!

I was pleasantly surprised by the genuine beauty of the countryside around Greyabbey. Me and three friends had heard about Strangford Lough and the cycling routes around the area, however, the unspoilt nature reserve itself, its wildlife, and the scenery excelled our best expectations. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast called the Retreat on the Blackabbey Road and all I can say about that place is it has been the best B+B that any of us have stayed in and between us we have stayed in a great many A++++++ ( great comfort, great couple, great grub, great therapys, great laugh) It also provided our aching limbs , with massage therapy and reflexolgy .The cycling routes here are top notch, safe and pleasant with lots of choices for all abilities. The Abbey itself was about a mile from where we stayed and certainly one of the most mystical and powerful spots in the North of Ireland. We brought back some of the best photographs taken this year and have been left wondering how this village and the surrounding area has not been flocked with tourists, our most delightful and most comfortable stay in Northern Ireland yet and we have already made a return booking for a full week already for September. For Nature Lovers ,Photographers and Cyclists like ourselves this is a truly unspoilt area that we already looking forward to return!
