“My favorite experience in Northern Ireland”
Reviewed 28 August 2011

I spent time at the Laurel Villa while traveling by myself through Northern Ireland in June 2011. As a college student from the US traveling solo, I was nervous about finding accommodation in an unfamiliar place. I can honestly say that the time I spent at the Laurel Villa was my favorite part of my trip - Eugene and Gerardine are incredible people who go out of their way to make your stay as wonderful as possible. Their kindness is beautiful and contagious. The villa itself is a lovely place with plush furniture and a variety of poetry-themed decorations that Eugene has collected. The breakfasts were perfect and served in a beautiful dining room. Eugene's Seamus Heaney tour gave me a wide range of insight into Seamus' life and his sources of inspiration and I would highly recommend the tour to anyone interested in Heaney's work. My room was beautiful and had everything I needed, including a very comfortable bed and seating areas. Magherafelt itself is a wonderful area with history and some really good restaurants. My favorite part of the stay was spending time with Eugene and Gerardine - but the tour was a close second. My least favorite part was leaving.

We could only stay for one night, which was unfortunate, as the welcome and personal attention that we received was much appreciated. The twin room with ensuite toilet and shower (Louis MacNeice Room) was very warm and comfortable (whether you had a serious interest in poetry or not). The style and taste with which this unique guest house has been furnished and decorated with a carefully chosen mix of antique and contemporary pieces, provides an interesting backdrop to the rich display of poetry and artwork.
The breakfast was of a very high standard with personal tastes catered for.
I look forward to coming back next year. This is an ideal location, as 45 minutes will take you almost anywhere in Northern Ireland.

This B&B is delightfully decorated with many works from irish poets. Even if you don't enjoy poetry or had bad experiences with it from school days the context in which poems are presented in the lovely decorated rooms gives you a second change to appreciate the wonder of a poet's words. Rooms are variously decorated - we stayed in 2 different rooms on 2 visits and both were comfortable. The Dining room is beautiful and the owners, Eugene and Geradine serve up a substantial and tasty breakfast. Eugene can provide a lot of useful information about what to visit in the surrounding areas. This is a unique place to stay with reasonable rates and a convenient location.

Room Tip: There does not seem to be any variation in the quality of rooms. All the ones we saw were nicely and...

4 of us stayed at Laurel Villa for 3 nights, and it was absolutely splendid in every way. Nice rooms, comfortable beds, excellent breakfasts, but above all wonderful kindness and genuine friendship from Eugene and Gerardine. For any Heaney enthusiast (which we are), Eugene is a mine of information and unstintingly gave his time to our enquiries. I cannot recommend Laurel Villa too highly

A very pleasant place to stay, with fascinating and comfortable furnishings and wonderful breakfasts. But it is Eugene and Gerardine whom make Laurel Villa so wonderful. Eugene immediately sat down with us and provided amazingly helpful information and maps--some of it online--to help us explore family roots nearby. Highly recommended!

Gerardine and Eugene have created a beautifully appointed guest house with wonderful accommodations and food. In addition, Eugene has a wealth of genealogy information at his fingertips and he is eager to share his knowledge with visitors. We had read that genealogy help would be provided for stays of 2 days or more. Since we were only able to stay one night we did not make any prior inquiries. However, on the day of our early arrival Eugene took time from his morning work with guests to get us started on a day of exploring the family homestead; a day we didn't expect to be so rich and memorable. If we ever get to Northern Ireland again, we will certainly make every effort to visit Laurel Villa again. Thanks. Jane and Tim, Rhode Island. USA

Laurel Villa was recommended to us by a lady at the Tourist Information office in Magherafelt when she learned we were researching our family history. It was our good fortune to find that they had rooms available and were also experts in helping us research family genealogical history. The rooms were delightful, clean and full of character. The breakfasts were delicious and made to order. Laurel Villa was so nice and Eugene and Gerardine were such gracious hosts that we actually extended our stay there to three nights. I will surely plan another stay there whenever I return to Magherafelt.
