Next to fine Kildrummy Gardens and Old Kildrummy Castle (13th century).
The new house designed in 1900 in Jacobean style on a fine terrace. Many original features.
New owners and some first day young French waiting staff.
The only major alteration in the main rooms is the extension of the dining room into the original kitchen. With 16 bedrooms and 35 miles from Aberdeen.
We ate a simple group lunch and bought the last drops of draught beer at the little bar.
Watch the red squirrel in the garden.

My wife and I enjoyed our last visit so much that we had no difficulty in deciding where in Aberdeenshire to stay. Again top level service and warm and friendly management and staff, in this beautifully located hotel.

My wife, who is something of a culinary connoisseur noted from the menu that there was a new head chef. And we felt that the food, which was still very good, was not quite up to the superb standard we experienced on our last visit.

We had a 2 night stay at the hotel and it was excellent.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to sample the dinner, but would heartily recommend the tea and scones for an afternoon snack, they were superb.

A teeny-weeny niggle was the limited choice of cooked food at breakfast, but all the great British staples were there, bacon, sausage, black pudding, eggs etc. At such a place I might have expected choice of kippers or some other "cooked to order" options. However, what we did have was absolutely perfect.

We had a very slight problem with temperature control of the shower in our room and as soon as I mentioned it to the owner, she offered to upgrade and move us to another room.

To me, that is perfect service; there's always a possibility that something won't work perfectly, but the measure of a great hotel is the way the staff deal with it and they were excellent.

Room Tip: Best rooms are at the front of the hotel with views of the castle ruins, but I believe they cost mor...

I had only seen pictures of this wonderful place before I booked it. We arrived around 5:30 on a beautiful sunny Easter Sunday evening which only enhanced the initial impressions of the place.
From the moment we walked through the door the service and attention from the very friendly staff was immense and very welcomed. We had cocktails and walked around in the gardens of this romantic and picturesque setting watching pheasants, rabbits and pigeons feeding in close proximity.
We stayed in the Bulwark room a very warm and relaxing room with a beautiful view of Kildrummy Castle and hills beyond. the bed was very comfortable and bathroom more than adequate
Orders for dinner were taken while having cocktails and then we were led to the dining room when our table was ready. Located near the window with a nice view of the gardens and wildlife.
The food was cooked to perfection and the table service prompt, courteous and very friendly.
After a peaceful and comfortable night we returned to the dining room for breakfast and were treated to a traditional Scottish breakfast buffet with some awesome food and once again a very friendly and prompt service.
The only disappointing aspect for us was that we had only booked in for one night and will definitely return for a longer period and will be bringing some friends with us.

Room Tip: As noted in the review we stayed in Bulwark room and the view was awesome

This was a beautiful location, which was basked in glorious sunshine and an ideal setting for a short break. There was however a few issues that would significantly improve the experience
1. Staff being more attentive to your desire to have a drink without a lengthy wait
2. The capacity to have your dinner at your designated time without an unnecessary delay, a room full of guests waiting in excess of 1 hour without any explanation was unacceptable
3. A chef who can cater for and meet the demands
4. A better selection of cooked breakfasts, made to order, avoiding the hot plate lottery with cold plates.
5. A chef that can differentiate between food that requires to be cooked rare, medium and not well done. The a la carte experience didn't live up to expectation.
6. Over priced food lacking in French flare.
7. With a little effort and direction and a clear leader the situation and experience could improve considerably.
8. Real shame for those few staff who made an effort to make your stay a pleasant experience.

We have been to Kildrummy Castle several times for lunch and dinner as we often stay nearby but haven't visited in nearly two years. We had heard that new owners had taken over so tried it for Easter Sunday lunch. I booked for three of some weeks in advance and we arrived a few minutes before our booking. As usual they asked us to take a seat in the bar and were given menus. We sat in the garden and were served our drinks; they were two other tables of five people also seated out there clearly booked in for lunch. It took around 25 minutes before anyone took our order and we were then left for 45 minutes with no offer of another drink nor explanation as to when our table would be ready. I went into the dining room and asked one of the waiting staff when we would be able to sit down and was told to speak to one of the other staff. I spoke to the French lady who took our order and rather than apologised she gave me a rather poor excuse that the two tables of diners that were now seated had delayed our table as one party had arrived 30 minutes late. She said the chef now had 10 people to cook for. Clearly not much of a chef if he cannot cook for 13 people but we had to wait. I did say the service was very poor and we had not been offered any further drinks and had bee waiting over 50 minutes by this stage. She then came out to us in the garden and subsequently apologised and got us more drinks. We were then seated and I have to say the food is definitely not as good as it used to be. The rack of lamb I ordered was very fatty and sinewy but we were all so hungry by this point we just ate up. The staff did try and make amends at the end by not charging for our pre-lunch drinks but the attitude we met initially and the chaotic manner in which they run the dining room and the quality of the food does make you think twice about going to this place. A shame as it was good but has changed dramatically and not for the better.
