“Great weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2013

my wife and I booked a two day getaway, not knowing what to expect.
a lot of negative reviews.
we were pleasantly surprised, the resort is rustic and being renovated. it is clean.
the location near algonquin is great, the staff were amazing and more than accomodating.
we had a great time and will return.

We had stayed at the resort before, when it was Martinwood, so we did not expect too much. We were pleasantly surprised. The bar and restaurant were open, we played pool and darts. We went canoeing each day, we went golfing on the nine hole course each day. The rooms had satellite tv. We did not like the original room we were assigned, and when we asked to relocate, there was no problem at all. People staying here should remember that this is not your typical resort, but if you want to golf and canoe and enjoy the scenery, it is good.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the negative reviews here. This is not a "resort". It is a place run by a few people (maybe six) who do everything. Our breakfast waitress was cleaning the rooms in the afternoon. Our dinner waiter was pealing potatoes at 2:00 p.m. preparing for dinner. We left early and the front desk clerk's comment was "Oh, you must be bored". She said it and she knew it. There is nothing to do. Our room had flies and bugs flying around on the ceiling while we slept. The pool had a dead frog floating in it for two days, foaming at the mouth. There are too many nice resorts all over Ontario for someone to waste their time and money here. I can go on and on. The previous experiences and comments on Trip Advisor are all opinions. Look at my photos, which are factual and if you still decide to go there, consider yourself warned. This place is just BAD!

Room Tip: Just stay away

The staff at this resort were most friendly and helpful. While enjoying a delicious made-to-order breakfast our server, Lori suggested that we might be interested in taking one of their canoes or kayaks out for a tour of the lake and perhaps a hike to 'High Falls." We thought this was a great idea and next thing we knew she had provided us with a picnic lunch and detailed instructions on how to reach the falls.
This resort is currently undergoing extensive renovations and should be spectacular once completed. Lori gave us a tour of the recently completed Spa area, very impressive!
Our room (309) was spacious with a nice view of the woods at the back of the property. Having a fridge in the room would be a nice touch though.
The fall colours were at their peak while we were there and the hike through Algonquin Park was beautiful.

Staff is what makes this place so much fun. Everyone is so helpfull and friendly. No stuffy greeters here! Golfing is very reasonable. Watch out for the moose because they are right there! It's awesome. We had a nice campfire down by the lake at the old cottage, It felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. A nice hot buffet style breakfast was available everyday we were there. At night, forget about a movie. Just go outside and enjoy the most beautiful theatre of stars. I'll be back next year for sure! Thanks so much, Larry.

Room Tip: Room 303 is huge with a King Size bed!

We arrived late, Ken nicely greeted us and told us my family was the last one to check-in, he escorted us to our room, a huge honeymoon suites with windows for both sides, in the day time, I opened the curtains let the sunshine came in, the room looked gorgeous.

Everyone we met was so nice and friendly, the owner Johnny said hi to us during breakfast time and he even helped me cleaned up my plates/table. Ken helped us so many times. The waitress Lorie, always helped us with a big smile. The owner Johnny's friend from Kitchener area (forgot to ask his name) chatted with us several times, a very nice guy. Peter and Sarah from Peterborough gave my family a ride from the beach. A big thanks to everyone!

We enjoyed the activities, Canoeing, Kayaking, fishing, swimming in the indoor pool and golfing.

Room Tip: Honey moon suites is wonderful!

We were treated like family the moment we walked in. We arrived late and they reopened the kitchen for us and we didn't even have to ask. Followed by that was one of the biggest and delicious hamburgers I had eaten. Shortly after eating they gave us a ride down to a bonfire on the lake. The next day we golfed were we had a bull moose pass by us on the 1st hole... so amazing. There is so much to do there from relaxing with a book in one of there sitting areas to fishing and boating to the pub w a pool table and darts. If my wife would let me I would go back every weekend. They have access on the property for the largest snowmobile trail in Ontario... so maybe this winter. To sum up, this is a resort that has more than any guest could ask for. Especially the staff, best staff ever! Oh and they are currently renovating and including a new ecersice room.
