Matum Hotel & Casino
Reviewed 4 December 2013

For the price, this was a very good deal. The hotel is centered in the heart of the city, thus allowing for any business a traveler may have in the city, to be close to the hotel. The hotel is also a historical landmark, as it was the site of the mid nineteen sixties revolution that could have lead to another situation like Cuba in 1959, had it not been for the American government's interceding. The hotel is lined with marble floors, and stained mahogany wood doors, giving it an air of old school class. Although the linen and covers were old, the room was clean and well kept by the maid. Breakfast was served in the morning, and tips were appreciated. There was free Wi-Fi in the lobby and on the second floor common area, but not in the rooms. Thus if you have free cellular telephone text service through the internet, it is a way to keep in touch without running an outrageous bill.
The Casino was modest, but at least it did not seem to be infested with pick pockets or thieves. The 2 Disco Lounges (Pure, looking at the left side of the hotel entrance, and Taboo, looking at the right side of the entrance and in the back) were a bit too loud, and could be heard in the rooms, long after midnight. That could be discouraging for some visitors trying to rest, but for others looking to experience a lengthy nightlife, it can be inviting. The Taboo serves Johnnie Walker Blue label, which could be enticing to the connoisseur of fine drink.
Overall I would recommend this hotel.

We stayed there March, 2013 for one night. This was our first stay at this hotel. We checked in at around 2pm and were shown a room down the hall towards the casino. The room looked larger than most we have stayed at in Santiago and the bed was comfy so we decided to take it. Everything in the room seemed to work, quiet AC. My wife's plane took off at 8am in the morning so that meant getting up very early to catch a cab to the airport. Our anticipated night of blissfull rest was not to happen. Around 9pm music and other types of noise from the attached casino started up and didn't let up until 6-6:30am. If you choose to stay here DO NOT take a room close to the casino. Otherwise the hotel is pretty nice. We might even stay there again in the future as it has a good location close to the monumento. We will ask for a room as far away from the casino as possible.

Room Tip: Unless you are a sound sleeper get a room as far away from the casino as possible.

Stayed to visit some friends in Santiago for a long weekend; the rooms are not the cleanest, the mattress was probably as old as the hotel, the rooms where very dark so shaving was a choir LOL. But what is to expect for $240.00 for 4 days? You get what you pay for so I cant complain too much.
On a positive note is in a very central location, and a so called breakfast is included.
If your looking for a good hotel in Santiago stay at the Hodelpa but you will pay around $200.00 US per night.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room away from the main street as they are very noisy at night

Stayed here for a total of 5 nights over two occasions. The hotel is part of a complex of buildings that comprise a hotel, casino, two nightclubs and two restaurants and is located very near the 'Monument to the Heroes of the Revolution' . Hotel Matum has some history, being the site of some fighting during an uprising against the government. A series of photographs on the second floor document some of the action.

The hotel rooms are adequate, but not special, the shower and a/c worked fine. My biggest complaint would be the mechanical noise and occasional ambient noise from people outside or from the night clubs. The biggest plus were the helpful and friendly staff, particularly Anthony and Francisco. Also I found the breakfast (included with the room) to be good with a nice fresh fruit platter, cold meats and cheeses, made to order omelets, fresh juice and good coffee. I would not characterize the room rates as a great deal, but are in line with other places of similar standing.

Room Tip: I'm told the rooms at the front of the hotel are quieter - though they would be on the street si...

I went to Santiago for the holidays in Dec 2012 thru Jan 2013 from the States to visit family. This hotel is in a great location right in the center of the city. In a safe area. The room was clean, bed was comfortable, bathroom was also clean, water pressure in shower was good, hot water worked well. Hotel is across the famous "El Monumento", a short cab ride to malls, near many dinning restaurants, big & small. The casino downstairs is nice also it's small but does have slots and table games. I travel a lot and have stayed in many hotels, I totally recommend El Matum it's a great value for your money. Staff was nice and helpfull.

i had to stay for one night in Santiago and was pleasantly surprised at this hotel. The price was right, the room was clean and quiet. The AC was cold, hot water, TV, all worked fine. The free breakfast (Dominican Style) was decent. The hotel has WIFI only in the breakfast lobby and main lobby but it worked good. Free parking and good service. I want to thank other Trip Advisors that made my decision to stay here a little comforting. i would definitely stay here , no frills but you get your bang for your buck.
