“Interesting hotel with energy-saver lights”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

Overall, I was satisfied with my three night stay at the Hotel Matum. I wanted reasonable comfort for a reasonable price, and I got it. The staff was very helpful, especially Francisco. The rooms were large and clean, but very dark, as were the hallways. Obviously, there's an effort to conserve energy.
The first night, was in the first room from the lobby area on the second floor...VERY noisy at night. It is right above the casino. The next morning, I asked for a different room, and I was cheerfully accommodated.
I disagree with those who said breakfast was good.....the only day it was good was Saturday (big improvement from the weekdays). In spite of the age of the hotel, my minor complaints, and a lack of the ameneties that Americans are used to, I would stay there again. It was an interesting, historic hotel with a friendly staff and excellent housekeepers.and the most reasonable price of the major hotels.

Room Tip: Get a room that is not over the casino/night club.

As we are both not fluent in Spanish and we can only understand a few words, this hotel has a lot of history behind it. You can see several pictures on the walls as well as a display. They do keep the windows open in the lobby so it does get hot. The rooms were large and the beds were comfortable as well as the pillows. It was very clean, the only flaws was that the internet does not work in the rooms really and the lights are not bright. They had a great breakfast buffet and the waiters were very nice. The front desk is not fluent in English but they try there best and treat us with respect. The Casino is attached to the Hotel and there is a Chinese restaurant on the other side of the restaurant. There is also a small restaurant and bar which is in walking distance. The best thing about this hotel is the LOCATION. It is walking distance to the Monument and the Museum as well as the restaurants. We have been driving to a few cities and Santiago can have traffic at times so be careful. I would like to stay at this hotel again but we booked different hotels each day to explore. A wonderful stay here.

We stayed one night at this hotel after we had a problem with theft at another Hotel. I actually enjoyed the size of this room and the bed was comfortable. The air could of been stronger but it stayed cool. They had great security and I felt safe. The only problem I had was the music from the Casino could be heard in your room so get a room further away if you are a light sleeper. they also had a free breakfast in the morning that was above average. I would repeat there in the future and it is located near the Monument.

Room Tip: Get a room far away from the casino, the music might be to loud for you.

I was in room 235, by the casino & had a club right outside my window. If noise doesn't bother you then don't worry about it, but if you need to make sure to get a good nights sleep I don't know that I would recommend this. Overall, I paid about $55 USD and had a room with a queen size bed & a single bed all to myself (that was all they had left). Staff is very friendly & helpful. Not much English spoken at all, so bring a dictionary and/or Google translate. Wifi only available in 1 limited space. Complimentary breakfast was so-so. Nothing to write home about, but a nice treat, since it is free. Room was very clean.

Room Tip: DO NOT book above the casino/near room 235

I stayed here for two nights in early February. The hotel was clean, the staff was helpful and the Wi-Fit was not open.i in the common areas was decent. The included breakfast buffet was decent with plenty of food available. I wandered into the casino looking for a drink but discovered that there were no sit down bars in the casino. There was an attached bar but it was a Sunday evening and it was not open. Same with food. There is a Chinese restaurant at the far end of the building which was fairly decent and has very cold beer :-). Hotel is located by the monument and park and so you almost need to take a taxi to other areas of town to find shopping and restaurants etc.

Room Tip: I didn't notice any noise in my room which was on the second floor right by the breakfast area.

I stayed at the Matum Hotel for one night in February. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Especially Kelvin at the front desk. His English is excellent and he is well versed in the what's worth seeing in the city and its history. He also very nicely re-started the wi-fi router for me.
My room was large with dark Spanish style furniture. As noted in other reviews, wi-fi is available in the lobby and the 2nd floor lounge where the historic photographs are displayed. My only quibble with the room was the lack of bed side reading lamps. The bathroom is well appointed although a dedicated bath mat would be welcome in addition to towels.

Room Tip: Pay in pesos for better value

I was shown 2 hotels by my escort upon arrival in Santiago de los Cabelleros -- the first one had a pool but was extremely sterile.. Matum has plenty of atmosphere and history, adorned with startling photographs of when it was under assault. One night a water pump or something broke and we had to squish our way up the carpeted steps to room, but it was fixed by next morning. Breakfast served til 10 or so, which is good. One side has noisy rooms and one side does not, I'd make sure you are on the more quiet side if you don't intend to party all night. Our room had neon light from disco shining all night but blackout curtains made that trivial. Staff was friendly, especially sweet Elizabeth, who ended up dressing my hair! Room was spacious and clean, extra towels on request... only complaint is that there was not enough light to read at night. But for a couple of nights, certainly a fine, well-located choice w/ good prices. Gracias.

Room Tip: If you see the PURE disco sign outside your window, you are on the quieter side.
