For some years in Hawksburn shopping centre on Malvern Road, Toorak, Corrie Perkin's bookstore My Bookshop has been a popular place. Now Perkin has opened a second Toorak bookstore. This one is in Toorak Village, on Toorak Road, in a handsome two-storey building that for years held a women's clothing store. On my initial visit I was surprised that the store was not overflowing with books. Rather, there's a little coffee bar at the front, then a sales and wrapping counter with quite an array of home wares and gifts around it. Books are displayed on the walls and on several tables, but as yet there is not a great depth of stock. There is no bargains/remainders table and, I felt, no particular incentive to linger and browse.
With the upstairs level providing a space for author events, this is a promising venue and I know I'll return to check on its progress.

Date of experience: July 2015
