“Nice place, friendly owners”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

This little place is just off the centre of Hanmer, with easy walking access to everything in town. Our hostess was charming and friendly and our room was very nice (being male I don't see the reason for the 32 cushions on the bed, but I was told that they were a lovely touch).

The room joined the main house, it could be described charitably as compact but it was warm and we were greeted with perfect chocolate brownies. I wish she'd just cooked them because the one issue we had was the smell of coooking (onions I think) that permeated the room for the entire night when we got back from dinner.

Another day I'd have given this place 5 stars but the smell was a bit off-putting. We'd happily stay again though. The gardens were a bit bare in winter but still nicely kept and laid out.

Oh and lighting the sign outside would be a good idea, the place is invisible after dark.

What a great motel. The garden room was spacious, well appointed and even had a corner spa in the bathroom. The owners couldn't have been better hosts. As for the location, just a very short walk from the springs and all of the local restaurants. The gardens of the motel were beautiful as well. A great find!

Room Tip: Garden room is the shot.

Great hosts, clean room, sound sleep,. My only complaint is that the bathroom was very cold. The room was the right size for a quick overnight stay, the price was right and the location great. I would recommend the motel to others. Would recommend a summer stay...the garden looked inviting, even in winter.

We're regular visitors to Hanmer and have sampled lots of motels and holiday homes - this place is a wonderful find for an overnight stay. Lovely setting, large room with very comfortable king bed, couch, kitchenette and delightful bay window with comfy seating. The bathroom is superb and the spa bath a treat. We enjoyed the friendly welcome including sumptuous home baking and real milk, and were delighted with the perfectly clean and beautifully presented unit. Easy walking to pools (pool towels thoughtfully provided), shops and restaurants (although take a torch if venturing out at night to help navigate the dark driveway).
The only thing we could fault was the unit heating, which is okay during the day, but ruined an otherwise blissful sleep with the noisy fan unit coming on and off on a pre-set thermostat, or timing out leaving us really cold in the middle of the night. On that basis we'll wait until summer before visiting again, but will be back to enjoy this lovely motel again, with its thoughtful touches such as a large candle for romantic dining, real coffee and plunger, and an impressive complimentary DVD selection for relaxed viewing.

We stayed here in the queen room for one night on our way through to Christchurch the next day. It's a very small establishment -- two suites with kitchen facilities and the queen room with ensuite that we stayed in -- and the owner was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Its position is excellent, being off the main street in a more residential area and between the spa centre, cafe/restaurant strip and Hanmer Forest walking trails.

Both forms of accommodation represent good value. The queen room is a little on the small side if there are two larger people staying in it and would suggest staying in the suites if you're a couple staying more than one night. The owner offered us the opportunity to upgrade, but I declined; in hindsight, it would have been a better option.

Overall, a lovely and very homely place to stay during our trip and thoroughly recommend it to others.

Room Tip: The queen room was fine for one night for a couple, but would probably recommend the suites for long...

This little hostel is perfect. It' very small, just a few rooms next to the owners' house. It is fully equipped with cooking equipment, stove, microwave, fridge TV, wifi and sattelite. The spa bath in the bathroom is extremely relaxing. The room is very comfy with a big bed and sofa. There's lots of information leaflets provided too. The location is about 3 minutes walk from the famous pools, with shops and restaurants nearby. I was even greeted with fresh baked goods. Thoroughly recommended.

For us to travel to this tranquil garden oasis in Hanmer not far from the town centre was great for soothing frayed Christchurch nerves. Thoroughly recommend it for people from Christchurch who might previously only do a day trip
