This is our second stay at Rippenvale Retreat after a short one night stay four years ago. We can not speak more favourably of the hosts at Rippenvale, Helen cooks the most amazing breakfasts which are reason enough to return time after time, but the friendly advice about the area and other personal touches mean that we would be unlikely to consider any other places for future short stays in Hanmer. Thanks again Helen and John!

Fantastic service and the food was equally fantastic. We love good food and wine. My husband was a chef for many years in London and cooked for 5 star restaurants. He was loving the breakfast and we both thought it was one of the best breakfasts we have ever had on holiday. Loved the welcoming chocolate brownie and 6 pm canapés with local wines. Accomadation was also lovely as was the squa under the stars.
Thank you for a lovely couple of nights.

What a delight - firstly greeted by our wonderful hostess Helen Beattie who escorted us to our beautiful garden suite equipped for every conceivable need.
Drinks and hors d'ouvres in the garden and breakfast the absolute highlight with scrumptious home made muesli, fruit compote and bread.
John Beattie escorted us on a one day 4 WD experience into the Clarence River Valley. John has lived in HS all his life so knows the country so well.
Our two days were a wonderful beginning to our New Zealand adventure.
Thoroughly recommend.

From the moment you arrive at Rippinvale, you know that it is something special. From the wonderful greeting to the heartfelt goodbye, this B&B is pure perfection. The service is impeccable with fantasic attention to detail, although the hosts make sure you have everything you need. The breakfast was to die for (as was the brownie that was waiting for us in our room), with everything homemade and beautifully presented. We had a delightfully, relaxing massage followed by a equalled relaxing dip in the hot tub. This was the quietest, most peaceful place I have ever stayed and cannot wait to return. Lily the cat - beautiful, friendly and a real character - she was waiting at our door when we arrived back from dinner, and settled herself in for the evening. Thank you again for the wonderful experience.

We had the most amazing experience when we stayed at ''Rippenvale'' firstly there was the most warmest of welcomes that anyone could wish for from both Helen, John and Lilly the most adorable burmese cat. This little gem in the crown of New Zealand is something so special that we would not want anyone to miss out on it. The accommodation is just perfect, clean very comfortable and private with all the facilities that anyone could wish for and the most amazing homemade breakfast which you order at a time to suite you the evening before whilst enjoying your complimentary glass of wine and fabulous homemade canapes with Helen who always has time to chat with you and help you make the most of your visit to Hanmer. You are just a few minutes walk form the centre of Town but right in the Country and very close to the local golf course. This is true quality and value for anyone who is looking for that special experience. Can't wait to visit again. Mike and Avril Joy.

When I stay in these boutique bed and breakfast locations, which are almost unique to New Zealand, I judge them on three criteria.

The layout out of the property and the rooms sense of specialness.

The passion of our hosts for offering hospitality.

The quality of the breakfasts.

In all three regards Rippinvale retreat delivers I felt at home, welcomed but crucially not in someones home.

Helen was the perfect host full of joie de vie, oferering the right amount of attentiveness and crucially for a one night stay ensuring we focused our attention in the right areas.

The breakfasts was not very good it was outstanding full of creative endeavour and was served silver service to the room which had a delightful court yard.

I talk a good deal about how Trip Advisor has its fair share of passive/aggressive reviewers incapable of asking their hosts to deal with an issue but quite ready to tell the global audience how something minor went wrong which could easily be addressed. If something needed addressing Helen and John would I am certain respond.

Occasionally a moment occurs on a trip which I never forget. The jacuzzi after dinner nestled in amongst the trees watching the stars appear in the night sky was such a moment.

Room Tip: If you prefer breakfast alone as opposed to communally this will suit you perfectly.

We stayed at Rippenvale for two nights as our Honeymoon to Hanmer Springs. Helen and John were the perfect hosts, friendly but not hovering as some other B&B hosts do, and the accommodation was wonderful! Bed was super comfy, spa/jacuzzi was excellent and the grounds imaculate. The personalised note upon arrival was also a lovely touch. We can't wait to make Hanmer a regular weekend get-away spot, just so we can stay here again!
