If you've a couple of hours to spare, or you don't want to immerse yourself in spa waters, walking up Conical Hill is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. It dosen't take that long to walk the distance but you'll want to stop and take in the views, especially at the top. It's quite steep but a wide path up through the trees and I think kids would enjoy running around and picking up pine cones etc. There are a couple of areas at the top - one an open shelter with a roof for shade or away from rain(!) plus a couple of picnic tables. It would be good to bring a picnic up here, or in any case a drink/snack just to sit and look at the views. Bring binoculars. A variation on the route on the way down takes you through a few suburban roads back into Hanmer town centre.
