“Excellent just off main drag”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2014

This was a very clean and up to date hotel with a patio, lawns and view of mountains. It seemed brand new, it was super clean and appointments were up to date. There is a laundry and free movies from office. Owners were very accommodating, friendly and helpful for places to eat and things to do. You can walk to everything but are off the main drag so it's quiet. We highly recommend the St. James.

Room Tip: choose downstairs with patio.

Friendly welcome from motel owners , who showed us to our very well appointed studio unit .Beautiful bathroom , bedroom area had a small deck with views of the hills .Must be stunning in the winter when covered in snow.
Short walk to the hot pools and well located for dining out at local restaurants.
Will return as we should have stayed longer.

We spent last weekend at the St James and loved it. We had a warm welcome from Jan who is the stand in manager and she soon had us settled in our room. We booked the spa suite and although we didn't use the spa it was worth it for the extra space, the room was huge! The interior design was tasteful and appealing and the linens were of good quality. It was nice having the option of 'green top' fresh milk rather that the normal 'blue top' UHT. The views are great and the location is spot on, you can walk everywhere. Will definitely stay again!

Our stay at the St James was wonderful. Every detail had been thought of, the décor was superb and everything was immaculately clean. Our terrace overlooked a wonderful view and we loved the village. We received a very warm welcome and our hosts were helpful throughout our stay. They even gave us towels to use at the spa after we had checked out! A pity we were not able to stay longer.

Truly spectacular....very nicely appointed suite, every little detail has been well looked after. Fireplace, spa tub, beautiful toiletries what more could one ask for. We would absolutely stay here again...highly recommend.

We stayed several nights in the St James in Hanmer Springs and were very happy with the premium studio we had. It provided a lot of space (bed and sitting area), a huge bathroom with a big bathtub, well equipped kitchen. The apartment had a great view toward the mountains. The St James is located very near to the centre of Hanmer Springs, a short 5 minutes walk to the thermal pools and even closer to several restaurants and a grocery store. The St James can provide you with pool towels and a pool bag, which will save you the cost of renting on the spot. There is also a common laundry area where you can wash/dry your clothes. Everything is very new and fresh.

Really my only complaint is about the internet. You are provided with an access code giving you 200MB of data per day. If you need more, you need to pay. Needless to say that 200MB is nothing if you have several people needing access and you're on vacation and perhaps want to upload some photos, research your next travel destination, talk over Skype or do whatever else. What's more, you are only able to connect 2 devices (yes, you read correctly, just 2). So if you have an iphone and an ipad, you won't be able to connect a computer (incidentally, you cannot just disconnect 1 device and connect another; the first 2 devices you use are locked in; nothing else can be connected with the same code). Having complained about this, I did receive an additional code from the very nice man in the reception (the host); still my internet allowance ran out quickly, which sort of soured the overall relaxing experience. My overall impression was that it is the policy of the St James to make guests pay for access exceeding the allocated limit (I informed a woman in the reception (I think also the host) that I ran out and was told I would need to buy more), which is a pity as my booking said 'free internet' (and not free internet up to 200MB per day).

My husband and I stayed for two nights - the last couple of nights of our two week trip around the top and east coast of NZ's South Island. The St James is central but quiet. The room was spacious, comfortable, perfectly clean and very modern. Our hosts were friendly and happy to provide restaurant recommendations. Whilst in Hanmer Springs we enjoyed visiting the Mineral Springs complex (a short walk and The St James provides you with a towel in a bag to take along). I wish I'd booked more time to stay and explore more than the couple of walks we took in the nearby forest. A week before our arrival we met a NZ couple from the North Island in Picton who had stayed at The St James just before Christmas. All their positive comments checked out!!
