“Hanmer Springs Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2012

Had a gorgeous weekend re-union, 3 of us "old girls" from 35 years ago in the Army. Just blobbed in the Hanmer Springs Hot Pools, wandered around the village- excellent restaurants and shops. The snow around the village added to the atmosphere. A weekend to remember.

“Friendly and relaxed - very cool!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2011

We took a day trip from Hanmer and took the winding road up the valley to the ski area. Note - you do need snow chains to attempt the very steep terrain and some of the turns towards the top of the pass are very hairy, not for the faint hearted.
we weren't equipped for skiing being day trippers so we hired a couple of sledges from the very friendly staff and spent a few hours getting wet and laughing.
The area is small but would afford a few good days skiing in good weather.
There is also a lodge / kitchen where you can stay in bunks and also use to make drinks and snacks - be warned however, it was the dirtiest kitchen I have seen since I was at university!

Thank you for your comments - just a couple of points to clarify - the road is like all alpine roads in NZ, as such it does require chains for safety reasons. It really is no more scary to drive than Mt Hutt. Our terrain is mainly for intermediate & advanced however we are installing a brand new beginners tow for 2012 season. The kitchen is allowed to be used by all guests including day trippers, we apologise if it was not up to standard on this day however we do endeavour to keep the area clean as it is functional and serviced by a clean each night.

“Hanmer Ski Area - really enjoyed it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2011

Been doing the club fields in Canterbury for years - nothing like it in the world. Best kept secret is Hanmer - long poma, really good terrain, and friendliest day lodge anywhere. Top it off, at the end of the day have a soak in the Hanmer hot pools. Good pubs and cafs too

“Fantastic day - truly up in the mountains with friendly people !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2011

Please don't miss out on the Hanmer Springs Ski Area when visiting the village of Hanmer Springs. If you are not used to driving in the mountains then catch a shuttle up. It is a special experience. Friendly, warm club house with helpful staff, ski and boarding instructors. Upstairs area suitable for small children or non-skiers to sit in comfortable, dry surrounds and watch the skiing out of large sunny windows.
Their two tows lead you to an expanse of uncrowded skiing. Don't be put off by the one rope tow. Its not as awkward as it looks and there is always the poma if you can't master it.
So pack up the picnic and immerse yourself in the "Club Field" atmosphere. Uniquely New Zealand and so so cheap !!!!!

“Skiing at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2011

What a wonderful ski area. The views are to die for.

The road is a lot better than some other ski areas we have visited. The staff are super friendly.

Skiing terrain is a lot better than i thought. Mixed terrain both intermediate and small sections of advanced accessible by a rope tow and pomma covering two different aspects.

This place also has some of the best back country skiing - not that anyone knows that yet.
