“Brilliant Place (now renamed to "le Gite")”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2013

The hostel has been recently renamed to "Le Gite". A beautiful place on the edge of Hanmer Springs. Only stayed here a night but definitely could have spent longer in Hanmer. Run by a cool Dutch guy, it has been recently rennovated, and comes with a fantastic well equiped kitchen. As mentioned it is cool they have free range eggs (so you don't need to buy a carton) and when I staed there where two whole plates of delicious free scones donated from the local bakery. They were pretty special.

I didn't see a TV in the common room - but to be honest - this was kind of a blessing... sick of TV's blaring at hostels while guests just veg out in front of them instead of chatting.
I'm too old to be dorming it these days, so I stayed in the family room (which was pretty cheap at $60 NZ - I think he charged me th single rate which was nice).

The hot springs are pretty good, (I think I've been spoilt in the hot springs department.... but they are obviously a must if you are coming to town)... but the highlight of my tstay in Hanmer was the drive I did in the hills behind town along the gravel backroads... through the valley and towards the Hanmer Ski field (which sadly was closed due to all of the hot weather and rain). Really stunning countryside out there for a hike or mountainbiking etc.

P.S. if you find a deck of "Monopoly Deal" left at the hostel. You have me to thank for that one :) but it belongs to the hostel now. ha.

Thanks for the great review!

Just to make things clear; Our hostel was formerly known as Le Gite and Jack in the Green is the new name since October 2012, not the other way around.

We would realy appreciate it if you could change your review titel to avoid confusion about this.

Enjoy your travels!

I only stayed one night at this place; I booked a double room with ensuite bathroom. It seems that this accommodation has two separated building. The twin and double bedrooms with private bathrooms are separated from the rest and looks newer! The room was large, clean, warm and cosy. The bed was comfortable. The area was silent or at least our room was (maybe because it was the far end! There was parking right in front of our room. I had read in comments that there are cats around and they are disturbing, but I should say that I was very lucky and I did not see even one around the hostel!

The only issues that I was not very happy were: 1- The bathroom sink was very small and washing hand without making yourself wet was a bit difficult! 2- Usually, hostels provide a small shampoo and body-wash for the rooms that have private bathrooms, but they did not provide anything! Anyway, these are not really big problems.

Totally, it is a very good place, I would stay there again and I will recommend it to my friends as well.

Room Tip: Go for the twin room or the double room with private bathrooms. They look more comfortable!

Lots of good things about this hostel:

Very clean place, cozy warm fire in the lounge, great kitchen with free range eggs for sale, Janet the friendliest cat on earth!! Good location, about 15minutes walk to the town, off street parking, free coffee tea and hot chocolate, lovely garden.

Just a few bad points, the owner was ok friendly enough, but he seems to keep a close eye on you, when your cooking he stands close by, he didn't make us aware that there was discounts available in the hostel to the thermal pools, found this out after we'd paid full price! Was quite expensive even with the bbh card, taking into consideration there was no free wifi it wasn't very good value.

A great hostel overall, just a little put off by the owner, other than that was perfect, would stay there again

Thanks for your great review! Glad you enjoyed your stay. Just to clear things up; we do not have any discount entry tickets for the Thermal Pools at all. This is why you weren't told about them... We did have a discount option if you booked your accommodation with an entry ticker included, but that was at least 12 months ago. Unfortunately we are no longer able to do this.

As you stayed here in July, you were probably helped by my relief manager when I was on a holiday. I have heard nothing but good things about him from other guests, and I am sure he didn't mean to check on you but just happened to be the kitchen at the same time.

We had picked this hostel because it's warm cosy pictures seemed so attractive on a winter trip and we weren't disappointed! Quite the opposite! There were plenty of surprises we made the most of on our short stay - cuddles from the resident cats, well stocked bookshelves, fresh free-range eggs for sale and a roaring fire. The walls were a bit thin but we felt very private in our double room complete with heater and ensuite and parking right outside was super convenient! The only draw back was having to wait for the heater to wam up our room after we arrived which after a snow took a little while! But we would stay here again definitely!!

Room Tip: Far end double room is the most quiet. Plus has own bathroom.

Thanks for the great review! We do try our best to keep the rooms warm with heaters, extra blankets and hot water bottles (on request). Must have been a chilly winter day. Thanks and see you next time!

We only stayed here one night, but it seemed like a really nice place. We stayed in a private double without ensuite, but the toilet was across the hall and the shower around the corner. The bed was comfortable; everything was very clean. We were told it was pretty much fully booked, but it did not seem crowded. We barely saw anyone and never had to wait for a bathroom.
They also have towels you can rent to take to the hot pools.

2nd February 13 135Km to Hanmer Springs time too relax, the road from Kaikoura to Hanmer was very winding and step as Navman took us the scenic route but the views were fantastic and roads had my Wife well back in her seat. Two nights another $12.00 saved the room was en-suite and comfortable, we had dinner at Robbies Bar food was good beer a good choice, and we got too watch England win the Sevens final after a good nights sleep had a walk a round town then relax time into the Hanmer Springs spa with freshwater lap pool, warm aqua therapy pool and Sulphur pools from 38 to 42 degrees don't close your eyes you could fall asleep, tomorrow 4th Feb 134Km to Christchurch

Room Tip: It's a mix dorm twin double en-suite

Accommodation was cozy, clean, friendly and well equipped (lovely big mugs!). ...very different to my previous backpacker experience in shabby, old, crowded places.
Comfortable bed, cat had to be evicted from the room multiple times during the night!
