“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

We are a big fan of Heritage Hotels and chose to stay in three different properties when we visited New Zealand's South Island. The Heritage Hanmer Springs lived up to expectations. The hotel building and grounds are lovely but we chose to stay in a three bedroom villa overlooking a large pond with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The hotel was very popular and the restaurant was sadly fully booked so we went into the town for our evening meal. The Heritage is really more of a resort than a hotel. It has an outdoor pool, tennis court and extensive grounds to explore. Our villa was lovely and we enjoyed curling up in the lounge area to watch a DVD after dinner. There were only two of us staying in the villa and we chose to use a bedroom downstairs rather than the upstairs master bedroom (bathroom facilities are downstairs). A very relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: The villas are lovely - ideal for families.

We stayed in a 3 bed Villa over looking the pond. We had all the space and comforts of home set in beautiful grounds with all the amenitys of a resort hotel. Location was perfect - just minutes walk to the thermal hot pools. Had a great time with the kids and will definately make the stay at the Heritage Hanmer Springs and annual visit. Only suggestion would be an up-grade of their own pool facilities. We only stay in hotels with pools for the kids.. But their pool was freezing and unusable really..

Dear Kelly H,

Thank you for your review and choosing Heritage Hanmer as your place of rest and relaxation. I have shared your experience with our staff and we were glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We do close the pool area for the winter months and we will re-evaluate when we should start this from.

Thank you again for your review and we hope to host you again in the near future.

This year, end of March, we stayed with another couple in one of the villas (3 bedrooms). We had a view of the lake, the villa was provided with all one could wish for: ample cooking facilities, ipod dock in living room, fireplace, and great beds! One of the nicest hotels we have stayed in, quiet and peaceful and close to the pools. We will definitely return!

Having stayed in another Heritage Hotel where we had nothing by problems, we were a little unsure about checking in at the Heritage Hanmer Springs, but we were soon put at ease. Soon after making the booking we were phoned asking us to confirm our preferred dining time, which we did. They then phoned us the next day asking for the same information. Finally they phoned us to ask us what our sleeping arrangements were to be. I am not sure whether I was impressed by all the queries or whether I found them a little overbearing. Whatever the case, everything was perfectly arranged for us.

Booking online was easy - so easy that I decided to add several extras: - late checkout (which we didn't use) chilled sparking wine, cheeseboard and chocolates on arrival.

We were booked into a Chalet which was clean and comfortable although a little shabby. Looks like it might be due for a refurb. But it was clean and airy.

The views across the lake were restful and very pleasant and we enjoyed our drinks and nibbles on the balcony for a couple of hours. The furniture on the balcony is not very comfortable so we ended up sitting indoors.

Room service was OK. We didn't have any milk the first day but we did get it the second day. Unfortunately whoever did the room service left the fridge door open so the cold wine we were looking forward to on our return from a day of sightseeing ended up being warm.

The dining room is beautiful and I certainly could not fault the food or the service. Wait staff were professional and friendly and the menu was compact and gave us considerable choice. We had opted for pre-paid dinners which was to prove and excellent choice. It included wine. We also opted for pre-paid breakfast which we are still unsure about. There was a nice buffet with all the usual fare, but the plates were cold and the food was also. We never did find out how to order Eggs Benedict from the kitchen - or indeed if this would cost extra or be included in what we had paid for the breakfast package. Thus we broke my long-standing tradition of taking Eggs Benefice at every hotel we stay in.

The hotel is great and the grounds and surrounds are beautiful. We both loved our weekend away and we are already planning our next trip back.

Dear realnamenotused,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and sharing this with our readers. We were happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us in general. I will follow up with our reservations team for the many phone calls you received with regards to your booking but I am sure it was only with the best intentions for your stay. I am disappointed to hear that we broke your Eggs Benedict tradition and assure this would have been available for you even with the prepaid breakfast option.

Thank you again for your detailed review and we certainly hope to host you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

Stayed here many years ago so was nice to return, won a nights accommodation with breakfast in a competition. Arrived early but was not able to check in till 2pm. Parking easy in front of hotel. Room was large nice king size bed with comfy pillows, 2 armchairs and a table, mini bar & tea & coffee making facilities. Bathroom was clean & tidy with a great shower. So quiet & peaceful had a great nights sleep. Bit of a mix up over breakfast at check in but eventually sorted & was a great buffet breakfast. Dining room is large and did feel empty but wonderful view over the beautiful grounds. Bit cold to use the swimming pool but would if we return in summer. Location is walking distance to pools & shops & restaurants if choosing not to dine at the hotel.

We stayed at Heritage Hanmer Springs for one night towards the end of our whistle stop tour of NZ. The hotel was fine - they had good laundry facilities. The room was a good size and the bathroom was huge. I cannot comment on the value for money as this was paid for as part of the whole trip. It was in walking distance to the Hot Springs so perfect location.

We spent a night here as part of a tour group.
The hotel is located in lovely grounds and is old enough to have some character.
There is a good choice of eateries in the town within easy walking distance.
We had Room 7 on the ground floor with French doors leading out to a sitting area. The room is quite large and equipped with a spa bath in the large bathroom. Unfortunately there was little space to unpack both suitcases and only really enough storage for our short stay.
We had a very good buffet breakfast in the dining room before we left. Unfortunately this was spoilt by one of the waitresses turning on loud and unpleasant "music" before we had finished.
We found the staff to be most welcoming and helpful.
Wi-Fi was free for an hour in reception area and I found that I could actually get another free time on each of my devices one after the other.
Overall a very pleasant night's stay.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are good.
