Owner description: Welcome to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa The best place to escape, Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa is an easy drive, just 90 minutes north of Christchurch. The best place to indulge, with a range of pools including relaxing rock pools, soothing sulphur pools, an array of water jets and bubbles - at a range of temperatures. Plus a luxurious day spa with a range of treatments, private pools, sauna and steam rooms. The best place to act like a kid, with an activity pool, lap pool, lazy river, water slides, garden picnic areas and the Tea Kiosk Café & Grill. Quite simply – the best place.

Nice place to soak the aching muscles after a long hike. Avoid the friday-weekends as it can get very busy! There are really hot sulphur pools (42 degrees) and filtered/de-sulphured pools (36 degrees). There is also a small lap pool (28 degrees). My favourite is the desulphured pool with the jacuzzi. The centre/core area of the pool provides the best pressured jets.

We visited Hanmer Springs purposefully in the off pique season. The pools were not all open but enough to thoroughly enjoy all the different temperatures etc. Everywhere was very clean. Good, friendly staff supervision. I could imagine it would be quite busy in the full season but still highly recommended after a long day of physical activity or just to relax and revitalise. Sitting surrounded by hot bubbles looking at mountains covered in snow. That is magical.

We booked a package deal, staying at the Hot Springs Motor Lodge.

Had lovely accommodation and entry to the pools, private steam room and massage - just what we needed.

We like the therapeutic sulphur pool and the large pool with the massage jets! The pools are always a bit crowded - but always very clean and well-staffed.

We've been here many times (and I have reviewed the place several times over the years) and there have been major improvements and upgrades during the years, but...and there's always a but isn't there! This time we visited first at opening time (10am) on a weekday and it was awesome. We almost had the place to ourselves! So much space, views and clean pools, clean everything. Cafe was great and no waiting. Two days later on Queens Birthday weekend, we visited at dinner time, hoping to miss the crowds, and it was tragic. Thousands of people crammed into pools. Lockers overflowing, long lines for the hydroslide and of course filthy changing rooms. Before you ask, yes there are HUGE signs in the changing rooms saying that 'their intention is to provide clean changing rooms' and that we have to inform them if they aren't (why can't they check them themselves, it's not our job!) but seeing as it was 7pm at night, and I had better things to do than do their job for them, I didn't hunt someone down to tell them. PLUS the cleanliness was only half the problem. The women's changing room by the cafe was in a badly neglected and broken down state. I could have taken photos but it would have made you vomit. Broken tiles, huge chunks out of the floor surface, broken soap dispensers, stains everywhere...the list goes on. I was afraid to have my bare feet on the floor.
Honestly, with all that money flowing in from the spa, couldn't they spend a bit of money to bring that changing room up to the mediocre level of the main changing room? Do they forget that the last thing that people do after they get out of the pools is get changed before leaving. So their lasting impression is not a good one. I am really looking forward to the day when I experience clean and well appointed changing rooms at Hanmer Springs.

Dear tipsfromtraveller,

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We are concerned to read of your experience with us, and assure you that as an organisation we take the comments of our visitors very seriously.

Being a tourist attraction, we are at our busiest on long weekends as travellers come from around the country. At times this can result in queues and difficulty obtaining a locker. However this does not excuse the changing rooms being dirty. I have sent your feedback to our operations teams to ensure that this issue is raised.

A planned upgrade of the main changing rooms is actually starting this week. This will be a completely new fit out and will lead to a much warmer and dryer environment, which also addresses the issues you have raised about the tiles and floor surface.

I am sorry your stay was not enjoyable but I can assure you your feedback has been taken on board and the current upgrade will result in clean and well appointed changing facilities.

Thanks again for posting a review.

We spent a couple of hours on our short trip to Hanmer at the thermal pools. It was extremely relaxing and soothing. It was a joy to enter the warm water on a cold evening! The place was quite crowded pointing to its popularity. There are multiple pools of varying sizes and shapes and temperature. We spent a lot of time in the sulphur pools which is between 40C and 42C. This was really soothing. Locker facilities are available for a nominal fee. Swim wear and towel hire are available too. The changing rooms are clean. Family changing rooms are available. This is especially useful for those with kids. Overall a good and relaxing way to spend a couple of hours. The café was not open while we were there. We also could not visit the slides as it was closing time(6:PM). The pools themselves are open till 9:00PM. Definitely visit even if it can only be a day trip from Christchurch! It is worth the travel.
