I have tried to book Last Straw Cottage a number of times over the years but it has always been full so I was thrilled to finally book a 2 night stay here in March. It was all I expected and more. A beautiful property in stunning countryside with everything you could want.

The kitchen is really well stocked, with full breakfast provisions provided as well, including bacon. There is a barbie, a herb garden, a laundry, 3 beatifully decorated and ultra-comfortable bedrooms, TV in the living room and the main bedroom, a claw-foot bath and walk in shower in the bathroom and beautiful gardens to enjoy. The bathroom has big fluffy towels, robes, slippers and lovely New Zealand made shower gel, shampoo etc.

We had visits from Pukeko and saw rabbits in the paddocks next door. Lynn left us blueberry muffins on arrival and popped in the next day with two delicious passionfruit custard slices. There was also a box of chocolates for us. Everything has been thought of here, it is all beautifully and tastefully done and we absolutely loved our two days here. Whilst it is very rural and off the beaten track, you are only a 20 minute drive from Richmond and a little further on to Nelson itself where there are supermarkets and restaurants. However, we loved the cottage so much we ate in both nights so we could enjoy the peaceful, beautiful surroundings. A gem of a place. Fabulous hosts. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: There are 3 rooms, two doubles and one with two single beds. All beautifully decorated with good qu...

Our family stayed at The Last Straw Cottage in March 2012. We had traveled around NZ for two months and felt so lucky to land at Lynn and Jon's very special cottage for eight nights (was supposed to be 7 but we luckily were able to extend it one day). It was by far our most comfortable stay in all of NZ...from the luxury linens and perfect beds, soaking bathtub, thoughtful local art and design ...it was just perfect. Nothing was pretentious here but we did feel spoiled, with an overwhelming feeling of being taken care of while away from home. We made two day trips with our kids, one to Abel Tasman and one to Golden Bay. Local galleries, cafes, wineries, breweries and just hanging out at the cottage filled our days. We need to come back!!!!! Did we mention the neighbors puppies we got to visit and the visiting horse our girls got to groom with Lynn? That was totally unexpected and genuinely appreciated. Everything was so up-to-date too - easy internet access, spotless inside and out, laundry, BBQ, the list goes on. The Straw Cottage is a gem tucked into the hills of Brightwater. We can't recommend it more highly!

January 2012 was our third visit to the Last Straw Cottage and the third time we have been charmed by our hosts Lynne and John and delighted by this 'home from home' cottage. If you seek a sense of solitude and relaxation whilst being a short drive from local amenities, sandy beaches, crystal clear rivers and impressive mountain ranges then the Last Straw Cottage is for you. Located in a secluded valley, the cottage is fully self contained and provides everything you are likely to need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Ideal for families and couples alike, extensive lawns provide a place to sit and listen to birdsong or for the active, run around and play one of the several outdoor games provided. Abel Tasman and other national parks are within an hours drive with Nelson lakes stunning scenery a little further afield. Lynne and John are the consummate hosts living nearby, never intrusive but on hand if needed. Little touches such as provisions on arrival to flowers and a daily local paper make all the difference. We have got to know Lynne and John quite well and enjoy their company on a regular meal out and walking expedition on each visit. We will be regular visitors to this stunning country and expect to return to the Last Straw Cottage.

The cottage is just perfect, like the ones in the postcards, but with all the modern comfort you may need. It´s the perfect mix between country cottage and a 5 stars hotel.
The welcome is amazing, with home made bread, milk, newspaper... the owner is the best host I ever met.
The quality of the beds, lights, sofas is wonderful, and it´s so clean it looks brand new.
After travelling 5 months in Australia, Polinesia and New Zeland, this is the best house we rented.

The Last Straw Cottage is one of the loveliest places we've ever stayed. Beautiful, warm, cozy, and immaculate with every comfort considered. The drive from the Nelson airport to nearby Brightwater is "sweet as" as the Kiwis would say, and in August lambs and daffodils were everywhere en route to the cottage, which is tucked among small farms and boutique wineries. Upon arriving we found flowers, a loaf of homemade bread and fresh eggs waiting for us on the kitchen counter along with yogurt, butter, cheeses and juice in the fridge (and one day during the middle of our stay a delicious carrot cake magically appeared). The cottage, which was sparkling clean, is constructed from a variety of native woods that lend the interior spaces a particular beauty and light. The first floor kitchen has everything you could need or want, and the living room is cozy and comfortable. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs which are simple and beautiful with native wood floors, down comforters, fine fabrics and expansive windows that wash the rooms in light and offer views of the garden below. We loved falling asleep to cranky pukekos and waking to a chorus of battling divas including bellbirds, thrushes, blackbirds, and robins. While wandering around the garden my husband once bumped into the resident peacock. What else...? The bathroom has heated towel racks - love those - and a great shower. There's a laundry room, lawn games, and bikes. The Nelson/Brightwater area is an awesome place to cycle with its quiet, long country roads and a trail that goes all the way into town. Finally, Lynne and Jon, the owners, are as warm and wonderful as the little cottage they dreamed of and built. They live across the paddock and are never intrusive, but always available should you need anything. Our teenage daughter was petting one of the horses over the fence one evening when Lynne invited her to help feed and brush the horses, which was a special moment for our city girl. Last Straw Cottage is approximately 15 minutes from Nelson making a car essential (or bikes if you're a big cyclist). It's situated in a rural environment, which is quiet and restorative and a perfect base for Abel Tasman, hiking, cycling, wineries, walks, and Nelson's cafe and arts life. Don't miss the Museum of Wearable Art in town, by the way. A last note: my husband and I travel all over the world for our work producing television and we've experienced many hotels, B&Bs, and rental homes along the way... as I mentioned at the start of this review, the Last Straw Cottage is simply one of the loveliest places we've ever stayed. Do yourself a favor and book a week longer than planned.

This is a beautiful cottage, in such a lovely setting, it's impossible not to feel relaxed as soon as you arrive, I would thoroughly recommend it for couples or families.

Our family of 5 (boys 17,19 and 21) stayed here for from December 22-25. It was a wonderful place to base for a Nelson visit. The Last Straw Cottage was one of the most well-appointed homes we have ever stayed. Just about every detail and need was covered, from fresh flowers, to fantastic breakfast foods (homemade muffins & bread, fruits, bacon, freshly laid eggs, and fresh squeezed juice). The kitchen and bathroom had everything you needed. Laundry room if needed. As already addressed in another review, there is only one bathroom (and separate toilet room) and it's located downstairs, but this no big deal for our family. Lots of books and games, free internet and tv, outside space to walk and play (great games of croquet in the backyard) and four bikes to ride around the neighborhood. It's rural and lovely -- woke to the sounds of cows, sheep and chickens. Easy drive to Nelson, Abel Tasman and other great spots. We loved our stay and would highly recommend a visit.
