The friendliest pub ever. We feel so much at home here that we travel hundreds of miles several times a year just to come to the pub.
The area is of course outstanding for recreational activities, and knowing that you can relax in the evening in a pub where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome, excellent real ales and great food makes a stay in this part of Wales just perfect.
Nice choice of ciders, some from the Gwynt y dragg brewery, and the five ales, personally picked by the landlord, are on constant rotation, making sure that there is plenty of choice- no wonder they are favourites of CAMRA.
There are two beer festivals a year, with live music and even more ale and cider, and with Ian and Anna (landlord and lady) constantly involved with everything we would highly recommend this family friendly pub :)

As licencees ouraelves, we recognise a good pub when we see one, in fact Duncan claims he can smell a good pub from a mile away. At the Star you get a warm welcome, good choice of well kept ales, tasty food at a reasonable price who could ask for more.

Stayed here with friends on walking weekend. We were made very welcome by Anna and Ian who always had time for a chat even though they were very busy. Excellent value bed and breakfast. Our three bed room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Warm friendly atmosphere in what is obviously a very popular pub. Huge choice of beers and evening meals delicious and good value. Excellent location for outdoor activities in Beacons and Usk valley. What more can you want?

Just got back from two nights at the Star and have to say they made our stay perfect. Ian and Anna make everyone welcome and work hard at making the rooms excellent, food great and beers in top condition. They even suggested a walk to see some waterfalls which again were absolutely wonderful and their advice was spot on. As another review says, if you judge it for what it is rather than what it is not you won't go wrong. Can't thank them enough and we definately plan a return. Ian, I forgot to pick up that pint glass you offered me so now have another reason to return. Book now you won't regret it.

The Star Inn is a great example of the type of inn that Wales does well. We stopped here for lunch on the weekend, just making it 5 minutes before they stopped serving food. We were heartened to find that the inn was extremely busy, a good sign as to it's quality. Ordering the vegetarian lasagne and steak and ale pie, we took a spot next to the log wood fire and waited for the food to arrive. When it did, we were pleased by it's quality of ingredients, the freshness of the salads (considering we only just made service) taste and attention to detail (the star pastry atop the pie a nice touch).
Overall, we thought the Star Inn was a lovely place to stop for a bite to eat or a traditional ale.

I've been going to this pub for years. It's just how a real traditional pub should be: tiled floor to accommodate wet walkers, excellent range of real ales, hearty pub grub and a beer garden for the summer days.

We had lunch there today, it had to be fish and chips as the cawl was all gone, but the fish had the tenderest (tempura?) batter I've ever had, and the fish too was succulent and fresh.

Just the place for lunch after a walk in the mountains.

We spent a weekend on Talybont, and ate in the Star Inn 3 out of 4 nights (it didn't serve food in the Sunday, or it would have been 4 out of 4). The food was top notch (and very reasonably priced), the wood burning stove was warm and cosy, and the bar staff were helpful and friendly.
We loved the Star Inn. Everything a pub should be.
