Reviewed 22 December 2011

Hotel very central, walking distance to most restaurants, the habour and shops. Staff very friendly whilst rooms are comfortable and spacious. Breakfast of good quality, generally a very relaxing and comfortable stay.

I recently stayed at Lambert's Bay Hotel for two nights at the conclusion of a five-week trip throughout South Africa. I chose the hotel because of the recommendation in Lonely Planet. They describe the hotel and its staff as "friendly" and that is by far the best way to describe the Lambert's Bay Hotel. Situatied almost on top of the waterfront, this hotel is a fine choice for accomodation while in this part of South Africa. I traveled to Lambert's Bay to visit the large (17,000 pairs) nesting colony of Cape Gannets on nearby Bird Island. You can see the birds from the front steps of the hotel! I stayed in room 2 and would recommend that you ask for this room. My bed and breakfast rate was 500 Rand per night which was a real bargain. I did not eat dinner in their restaurant (went to Isabella's on the waterfront instead) but enjoyed sitting around in Die Anker bar at the hotel watching rugby and chatting with other rugby fans. The staff here was among the most knowledgable and helpful I encountered anywhere in South Africa. On the return leg of my journey home I had a 11:00 a.m. departure from the Cape Town airport. Various estimates from people in town suggested that it would be 4.5 to 5 hours from Lamberts Bay to the airport (it took 2 hours 20 minutes!) so I left at 5:00 a.m. Because of my early departure the hotel had a take away breakfast waiting for me on the front counter when I departed. There was enough food in that container to feed a horse. However I think to the management of this fine hotel it was just another way to take care of their guests. Were I ever to return to the Lambert's Bay area I would stay at the Lambert's Bay Hotel and do so without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for room 2 if its available.

Stayed 1 night as part of a tour. This hotel is ancient, but it provided us with everything we needed for a comfortable night. The one problem we had was that the water has a tendancy to be brownish for a while, it seems to be due to the overall water system in Lamberts Bay. Well, this is what we were told, it did not give us much of a headache though. We did not have diner in the hotel but at the beach in the Muisbosskerm. An open air restaurant, with very good seafood, forget knife and fork. You are expected to use both hands and maybe a clamshell. Great fun. Geat sunset too.

This hotel needs total refurbishment. The rooms were basic and shabby but at least the room rate reflects the poor condition. The restaurant staff were very friendly. Dinner was basic. Breakfast the usual hotel stuff. Very glad we had only booked in for one night. I wouldn't like to stay there again unless the hotel was totally refurbished

We were in the process of extensive renovations and since this hotel was built in 1888 we realise it will be an ongoing process forever, but do ungrade and renovate as we have the funds available. We also do employ 30 people in a town where unemployment is a huge problem.

We arrived at the Lambert's Bay Hotel on a Saturday evening with no reservation. We were greeted by charming staff on reception who gave us a discount on our room as we stayed for three nights.
The location is fantastic - right on the main road running along the waterfront. There is secure parking and the police station is next door. Unfortunately the police had a very noisy party intil 3am the night we arrived. Our other two nights were very quiet.
Breakfast is good and the choice and quality of evening meals - particularly the seafood - are great. The wait staff have real personality and are a pleasure to talk to. The laundry service is extremely economical. The pool area was small and the pool itself was not terribly inviting.
Our room was okay - fairly old furnishings and smallish twin beds - but certainly comfortable enough. There was a tub and separate shower in the bathroom and we had a small balcony.
I would recommend this hotel.

The Lamberts Bay Hotel was definitely the poorest establishment we stayed at during our road trip through Namibia and the Northern Cape of South Africa. The hotel was totally overrun by a group of bikers that smoked up a storm in the lobby area causing the entire hotel to reek of cigarette smoke. We complained about the cigarette smoke stench in our allocated room and were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. The linen did not fit the bed; it was a king sized bed with double bed linen. The “fitted sheet” was a double bed flat sheet laid over the mattress. The shower did not have enough water pressure to work. Room service took an hour to make a toasted sandwich.
On the bright side, the restaurant is really good and the food was excellent. I would recommend the smoked Snoek pate with Rooibos bread as well as the Calamari.
