“Poorly managed, will never recommend”
Reviewed 21 August 2011

We were on a family holiday and what a disappointment it was. First of all, the hotel is not in Madikeri as claimed in the website. Be prepared to travel a minimum of one hour from Madikeri. It is about 50km from Madikeri in a tiny hamlet called Cheyandane. When you do reach the place after a tiring journey, there are no signboards to lead you to the place. We had to go up and down and finally after several enquiries, we could locate the house on top of a hillock.

The rooms were neat, but we had paid for extra beds @ INR500 each. The so-called beds were too short for our kids that they had to share our own beds. There were no tubelights in the room, only incandescent lights which was quite a pain even for casual reading.

Power failures were so frequent. Whenever the power went off, the host came and asked us to switch off the fan and all other lights in the room except one. She was paranoid that the inverter she had would get discharged! On our first night's stay, we kept the lights in the rest room on as we were quite scared. There was no night lamp in the room nor was there any anti-mosquito repellant, a normal thing found in even 2=star hotels. The next morning, the host told us that the lights were on in the rest room the whole night. Oh boy, and I thought the rent was inclusive of electricity! Reading our annoyed faces, she tried to gloss over saying that insects would get attracted if the lights were on. All the more reason that the lights have to be on, lest you find a spider or a jungle beetle giving you company in bed!

The towels were not washed and we ended up using the same towels which we used on the first day. Some "luxury" homestay this!

To be fair, the food was quite good but she charged us INR225 per meal per person, a rate which is quite close to that of star hotels in metros in India! On the second day, the hot water was so tepid for a shower that I ended up having a severe headache. We were quite glad to get out of the place, but what a way to end our holiday!

Soon upon arrival, I asked the host whether they would serve food for our driver (I was ready to pay for that too). He insisted that the driver must sleep in the car (no problem with that) and that he had to go to the nearby village to eat. The problem was, as we later learnt, the only hotel in that village closes by 7 pm. The driver's pride was too hurt to ask the hosts for food and he ended up buying some rice and provisions from the vilage and cooking it himself in the worker's house. He had dinner at 11.30 pm. Some host!

Overall, our stay was not comfortable and we would never recommend this place. Please head for Orange County near Siddapur. You pay slightly more, but at least you get an enjoyable and relaxed holiday.

We were a bit surprised how long it took to get there from Mysore, but it was worth it. We went to Ashraya for our anniversary, looking for a quiet and peaceful getaway. It was tranquil and beautiful. Swathy adjusted the menu to our American tastebuds (we had both Indian and Western food for breakfasts), and it was delicious. Mr. Aiaippa gave us a delightful tour of the plantation. Our morning walks along the road wound among coffee plantations dotted with teak and jungle oak trees.

It is a two-hour drive from Ashraya to Ravi Ghandi (Nagarahole) National Park, which we visited and loved. Other sights are closer, but we didn't make it to them. Be sure to try some local honey.

I was a solo American female traveler who has been to India many times: I was looking for a relaxing vacation in Coorg. After much research, I decided to stay at Ashraya Homestay, and I'm delighted that I did. All of my email inquiries were answered promptly by Mrs. Swathy Aiyappa; she was so helpful and kind. Mr and Mrs. Aiyappa's home was lovely and comfortable. They offered excellent company and conversation, but also let me enjoy my time alone whenever I wished. Their coffee plantation is gorgeous; I enjoyed long walks along the local roads, looking at coffee bushes, banana and coconut trees, and so many interesting plants and flowers. And the food was AMAZING! The most delicious home-cooked food I had in India. So, if you are 1) traveling alone, 2) from a foreign country (not India), and 3) adventurous, the lovely people operating Ashraya Homestay can help you enjoy a unique experience in Coorg. I highly recommend it!

My husband & myself were doing a Road trip from Mumbai to down south and Coorg was one of our destinations, we decided to choose a homestay at Ashraya. We had the most amazing experience, Uncle & aunty went out of the way to take care of us. The location is gorgeous as u look into coffee plantation, tall trees & hills... practically one can sit outside the house & just gaze thru the natural beauty. The rooms & bathrooms were very clean & spacious.
It was a true homestay where we got introduced to coorgy culture, we visited the ancestral home & the temple were all special ceremonies are held.
One word of caution - watch out on your weight as Aunty servers the most delicious food that after one meal you wait what special is being prepared for the next meal and not to miss the desserts .. mouth watereing.

Me & my husband had a wonderful holiday at Ashraya Homestay, Coorg. It was perfect.
Our Host Mr. Aiyappa was awesome & patiently answered all our questions. He also suggested places that we could visit during our stay. The food was superb, we got to taste the traditional pork curry, bamboo shoot veggie & akhi roti..We felt completely at home.... A special thanks to Soumya & leela as well who were the housekeepers. We are looking forward to staying at Ashraya again...

My wife and I visited Coorg in December 2009 and stayed at the fabulous homestay, Ashraya in Cheyandane, Coorg.

The experience surpassed all our expectations. The Aiyappas, were amazing hosts who patiently answered all our queries and were most enthusiastic in helping us plan our time there. Their hospitality was unforgettable.

The food was superb! We feasted on the local delicacies like akki roti and pork curry, had homemade honey and preserves laid out at breakfast and enjoyed the estate grown coffee.. it kept getting better!! The optional lunch / dinner meals were very nominally priced. In a place like Coorg which doesn’t have cafes or restaurants around, we were lucky to find a place that excelled in food!

Our room was spacious, with plenty of room for luggage, was comfortable and clean (especially the washroom). The place was adequately staffed to look after our every need.

This is a lot more than a homestay experience and offered us great value for money and a perfect getaway. I would highly recommend it!

I was planning a holiday in Coorg with family (wife & two small children aged 6 & 3 ) and wanted a homestay in a estate where we could show the children how trees grow and about coffee picking etc

Our stay at Ashraya (Chudamani Estate) with the Aiyappa family (mr. Lal Aiyappa & Mrs. Swati Aiyappa) was the best decision i could have ever taken for this trip. It was a lovely estate house nestled on top of a small hill with a interesting drive up.

Uncle & Aunty went out of the way to make our stay comfortable and were particularly patient with our two naughty children who had questions about everything . A special mention of the home keeper's - Leela & Sowmya who tolerated us & the children and kept us up with those lovely cups of coffee & the delightful kodugu cuisine.

Uncle took us on a short drive (despite the rain) to his ancestral house which was a major revelation to us. The Chelavara waterfalls was simply breathtaking.

Would recommend this homestay for everyone who can value the presence of uncle & aunty. We learnt a lot as a family and hope to be in touch with them forever. For us it was a home vacation.!
