We were on a family holiday and what a disappointment it was. First of all, the hotel is not in Madikeri as claimed in the website. Be prepared to travel a minimum of one hour from Madikeri. It is about 50km from Madikeri in a tiny hamlet called Cheyandane. When you do reach the place after a tiring journey, there are no signboards to lead you to the place. We had to go up and down and finally after several enquiries, we could locate the house on top of a hillock.
The rooms were neat, but we had paid for extra beds @ INR500 each. The so-called beds were too short for our kids that they had to share our own beds. There were no tubelights in the room, only incandescent lights which was quite a pain even for casual reading.
Power failures were so frequent. Whenever the power went off, the host came and asked us to switch off the fan and all other lights in the room except one. She was paranoid that the inverter she had would get discharged! On our first night's stay, we kept the lights in the rest room on as we were quite scared. There was no night lamp in the room nor was there any anti-mosquito repellant, a normal thing found in even 2=star hotels. The next morning, the host told us that the lights were on in the rest room the whole night. Oh boy, and I thought the rent was inclusive of electricity! Reading our annoyed faces, she tried to gloss over saying that insects would get attracted if the lights were on. All the more reason that the lights have to be on, lest you find a spider or a jungle beetle giving you company in bed!
The towels were not washed and we ended up using the same towels which we used on the first day. Some "luxury" homestay this!
To be fair, the food was quite good but she charged us INR225 per meal per person, a rate which is quite close to that of star hotels in metros in India! On the second day, the hot water was so tepid for a shower that I ended up having a severe headache. We were quite glad to get out of the place, but what a way to end our holiday!
Soon upon arrival, I asked the host whether they would serve food for our driver (I was ready to pay for that too). He insisted that the driver must sleep in the car (no problem with that) and that he had to go to the nearby village to eat. The problem was, as we later learnt, the only hotel in that village closes by 7 pm. The driver's pride was too hurt to ask the hosts for food and he ended up buying some rice and provisions from the vilage and cooking it himself in the worker's house. He had dinner at 11.30 pm. Some host!
Overall, our stay was not comfortable and we would never recommend this place. Please head for Orange County near Siddapur. You pay slightly more, but at least you get an enjoyable and relaxed holiday.
