It is best to visit the temple early in the morning i.e. before 9 A M. Only then can you enjoy the beauty and serenity of the place. The Omkareshwar temple is on an island which can be reached either by a bridge or by boat. I would recommend the boat ride on the river Narmada as it would help you in soaking up the divine atmosphere. The confluence of rivers Narmada ,Kaveri and Tawa can also be seen.
The Mamleshwar temple on the opposite side is again an archaeological marvel. Comparatively quieter and less crowded, it is a must visit as the legend says that both the temples are equalyy sacred and the pilgrimage will be complete only by visiting both of them.
A hydel project by NHPC is built on the river Narmada. A view point close to the project gives a beautiful bird's eye view of the entire area.

We were surprised at the spacious surroundings and the tank. Another pleasant thing was the absence of shops selling flowers and pooja items. Those with a problem walking on bare feet please wear thick socks

Omkareshwara Temple is listed in tourist attractions in Madikeri, but there is nothing great or special about this place. Just an ancient temple dedicated to God Shiva. Like any other temple, it is calm and peaceful. Located in Madikeri town, with in less than a kilometre from bus stand and Raja's Seat, another tourist place, it is easily accessible and can be visited with out much preparations. What strikes about the temple is its Mugal architecture, unique for a temple, with minarets and dome. Temple and surrounding areas including the the tank in the front are maintained very well. One can while away about an hour here.
