“Friendly staff but bit deserted in evening”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2014

As most of the resorts, the Jungle House Hotel is on Thanarat Road that leads from Pak Chong to the park entrance. If you don’t have your own car and arrive by bus in Pak Chong, you can take a taxi to your resort. Some resorts pick you up. I only stayed at the Jungle House Hotel one night and was given the "house" closest to the road, which is not so quiet. Apparently, if you get one of the houses further away from the road, you shouldn’t hear the noise. The room itself was basic but clean. The first day, I was on a half day tour and only returned to the hotel at 7.30 pm. The restaurant closes at 8 pm, which I found a bit early if you wanted to have dinner at the hotel. Also, the night I stayed there, the place felt a bit deserted. This may be because there didn’t seem to be other people at the hotel and because the restaurant closes early. After dinner, there is not much to do than returning to your room. Breakfast is included in the room fare and there is a choice between a Thai and an American breakfast. The American breakfast consists of a fried egg, some sausages and some ham. There is also toast and instant coffee on the buffet. The staff was very friendly but at reception only one person spoke English.

Room Tip: Ask for a room further away from road.

We stayed here for New Years Break and all three nights could hear an extremely loud band/karaoke going until at least one am, keeping us up and waking us up until then. We stayed in the Cicada room, and while some of the other rooms looked nicer, ours was cold (it was winter, so this wasn't a nice cold), very dark (the windows were permanently shuttered), it was dusty, the water was rusty and the style was very outdated. We paid 2500 B/ night and felt we certainly did not get our money's worth from the experience. The provided breakfast was bad, but busy, so they were constantly having to refill and usually not often enough. But the staff were super friendly, wonderful and helpful. The restaurant is pretty good and the on-site coffee shop was great.

Room Tip: Don't pick the cicada room.

We stayed here for three nights, while exploring the Khao Yai National Park. We were originally given a room in the new building (called the "Tree House"), but the noise from the main highway was loud, detracting from the ambience, and the room's decor felt very "plastic-like". For an extra $10/night we switched to a room away from the main highway, and it had a nice rustic feel - definitely worth the extra cost. The hotel has some very nice elevated walk-ways, from which you can bird-watch or simply enjoy the views of the area. The included breakfast is mediocre at best - instant coffee, slices of "Wonder bread" that you can toast and slather with some dreadful margarine and overly sweet marmalade, and eggs that come undercooked. You can ask for "Thai breakfast", which replaces the eggs and consists of a reasonably good but small bowl of noodle soup. The wait-staff in the dining area seemed perpetually miffed that they had customers. It was hard to get their attention away from their ipods/cell phones long enough to listen to your order. We tried having dinner at the restaurant one night and were not impressed with the food quality. There are other dining options along the main highway (some of which you can walk to). If you're adventurous, try some of the small restaurants that the locals use. We had our very best meal in Thailand at one of them.

A few things you must be aware of when you go to this area: (1) the tourism is increasing by leaps and bounds and you see construction as well as a lot of big billboards advertising newly constructed condos (i.e. this is a not exactly a remote location) & (2) virtually all the hotels in the area are miles away from the park entrance (i.e. you need to hire a car to get you there).

We had an excellent, very knowledgable guide while in the park, who went way beyond the call of duty (my teenage daughter was having an ear ache so she brought us into Pak Chong and took us to a clinic, translated for us, stayed with us for an extra two hours, etc). The guide service, which is run by herself and her husband) is "Wildlife Safari and Jay Jungle Tours (Jayjungletrek@gmail.com).

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the highway

Went to this hotel for the elephant rides which were mega-cool. 300 BHT for 30 minutes or s through the jungle and in river. Elephants are obviously well cared for and the Mahout takes care and pride in his elephants. He was great took pictures for us and gave loads of information about elephants. We did not stay at the hotel but did the elephant rides, had coffee in a very nice café there, looked around and talked to staff. Very nice place and well kept up.
