I stayed here for 2 nights with some friends and we had a great stay. Getting to our room involved walking up quite a number of stairs, which got a little tiring but the view was really nice. I would recommend a room closer to the beach that would require less stairs.

The pool was nice and the service provided by the staff throughout the whole experience was great. The food from the a la carte menu by the pool is pretty good but obviously more pricey than other places on the island.

There is good wifi coverage, which was was a great help.

I booked a dive with the hotel's scuba company in front of the hotel. It was easy and convenient to book and they allowed me to charge back to my room. The service was great and the guys were really friendly but the dive itself was definitely substandard and way overpriced! The maximum depth was only around 10m and there was not much to see under. I would definitely not recommend booking a dive with them as you will feel cheated for the price you pay

Great overall experience with the hotel though and I would recommend staying there. Very relaxing!

Room Tip: Get a room closer to the beach so you don't need to climb as many stairs.

My friend and I arrived by the hotel's speed boat. Very nice and easy. The beach was beautiful clear water, a bit of trash floating around but mostly in the morning when the tide came in. The staff at the hotel came and cleaned it up a couple times a day, that was nice. You can walk to the other side of the island in 20 min. if you want more action and people. I was quite happy with the quiet. We ate at the thai restaurant on the beach a few times and thought it was good. Our bungalow was pretty basic for the price paid. But it was clean and comfortable with a great view. Massages on the beach were nice. I would come back here.

We have just spent one week here. The beach is beautiful and there are various water sporting activities. It is reached by a 10 minute speed boat or a cheaper boat (40 mins) takes you to the main ferry pier on the west of the island and then a cheap"taxi" ride (more a pick up truck) to the resort. The road (more dirt track at the moment) is under construction to the main pier, and is is bumpy and dusty. We think we had the best bungalow on the resort (just 3 different hotels 2 owned by the same company) which went straight down the steps to the beach with a fantastic view. A very spacious bedroom with queen size bed and decent size shower room. We had fruit and flowers in the room on arrival. The gardens are being renovated at the moment, but they are still beautiful. The prices are a bit steep in the bars and restaurants compared to cheaper resorts, but there is no comparison to the quality. The staff and service are absolutely first class. The most expensive restaurant is the Italian and the wine is pricy by Thailand prices. All accommodation have decked areas with seating and a table. The breakfast was great with lots of choice. Dinner too was great with an extensive menu.
If you like nightlife and entertainment this is not the place for you. It is perfect if you wish to relax and be spoiled. We loved it - but 7 nights was a little too long, but we enjoyed the pampering after the hustle and bustle of sightseeing in Bangkok and Cambodia. B & R Cheshire

Room Tip: We had room 200 -the best location and a bigger bungalow. Some bungalows higher on the hill are at t...

this was a fantastic experience especially as my daughter got married here. Lovely location, great food, extremely pleasant staff, lovely beach and pool. You can stay in the resort and enjoy a live group singing or travel to a much busier beach where a lot more going on if prefer that, though beware, a very bumpy journey! Yu can also get spa treatments though not especially cheap, cheaper on the other beach mentioned previousy

Room Tip: The nearer the beach the better, lower down

My husband and I travelled from Bangkok where we live to Koh Samed with a party of 30 people from his workplace. We spent the weekend as a group and I must say we were very impressed with the overall experience. Our bungalow on the hill was perfect for two people, everything worked well and it was spotless. The view of the ocean from verandah lent itself to much sitting and pondering. Apart from many dining experiences and opportunities for diving, kayaking, snorkelling and swimming the overall ambience lent itself to a relaxing and totally wonderful time there. Staff were the best. I am already planning our return during Songkran in April. Thanks everyone. Heather Clarke

This was my second time at the Ao Prao, the first was in 2004 - ten years ago - some things have changed others have not. The garden used to be spectacular, its under reconstruction now. There was no internet in the rooms, now it is excellent and for free. The rooms (cottage) are exactly the same, ten years ago when boutique hotels were a novelty it was great, now you can certainly find nicer designed rooms elsewhere. BUT being around for so long they achieved something else here. They have quality of service - something you don't always find in Thailand. Unlike some of the travelers that comment here we found the staff highly attentive and well trained. Communication in english was no problem at all and our needs and wishes where met swiftly and satisfactory. YES the prices are higher then at others places on the island, but compared to other resorts in the same league, they are actually moderate. We think its a perfect place for a few days away from the hustle and bustle of BKK and a romantic weekend at the beach. Just don't think about the 80 Baht more for you drink, rather enjoy that is done to perfection.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are newer but you will have to climb a good set of stairs, we went for the beach fr...

This place is a 3 star accommodation with 5 star prices. Even the beach is beautiful, the bad experience in the hotel cannot compensate. Was charged 1200 Baht (40$) for a extra bed in a simple bungalow. Poor breakfast with just cheap supply. It's a shame as the location is great.
