“Amazing location”
Reviewed 22 April 2010

This hotel is perfect for a getaway with your partner. It is quiet and very private, if that is what you want. The location is beautiful right at the beachfront. The island of koh samet is nothing special and it is very hard to get around on the dirt roads, so we only spend 1 day touring the island. Rooms are clean and very roomy, but be aware that this is a national park and animal sound can disturb your sleep.

The only downside is the price. It is a bit overpriced, both the hotel and the restaurant - At least compared to BKK.

The hotel was nice in comparison to the appearance of the other hotels. However, for the price that was paid the rooms were too small and everything was too expensive. The internet was expensive and the hotel did not have any wireless access.

You can get a great hotel for about 1/2 - 1/3 of the price in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. And acknowledged that the location is different, however it seems like too big of a jump for what you got

Stayed for 4 nights, 1-5 March. Ao Prao means Coconut Beach in Thai and sums up the resort well. Ao Prao has its own check- in lounge on the hight street in Ban Phe. Air conditioned, with toilets, newspapers, water, coffee etc. A refuge from the heat of the town. The speed boat took less than 10 minutes. Get the timetable from the hotel in advance as there are only a few transfers per day. We took the 11.00 out and 15.00 back. The boat trip is a great way to start. Once at the bay they reverse a mobile pier into the water and you hop off. All very exciting. Included in the room price.

We arrived in the morning, so we had to wait for about 30 minutes for our room. We thought we might as the resort was full. The resort is comprised of a number of wooden chalets on a hillside behind the beach. Virtually all have sea views. As we booked last minute there was only a basic "delux" room available, so we had some steps to climb, but the views were fab. The rooms are a bit disappointing at first. Clean and tidy, but just a bit jaded. Huge bed. OK but drab bathroom. No bath and a slow darining shower. Old style TV with no BBC world, just CNN. Fridge. Tea/coffe facilities. Free bottles of water daily. Electronic safe.

The small and fully enclosed bay has 3 hotels. Ao Proa at one end, then Lima Coco in the middle and the very flash and expensive Le Vimarn at the other end. Takes 5 min to walk the bay. The bay is very quiet with only one road entrance with security. Superb west facing white sandy beach with excellent sunsets. Shallow clear water. No jet skis- just peace. Plenty of padded sunloungers and shades on the beach. Small infinity pool to cool off, with a wooden decking area overlooking the beach. Lovely cool sea breeze most of the day. Good breakfast with egg cooking station, nice fruit and cakes and good coffee.

We tried 3 restaurants in the bay. "Breeze" at Ao Proa - Thai/International/seafood. Overlooks the beach. Nice for lunch, but the evening meal was average. Also ate at "O" at Le Vimarn. Italian. Very smart decor, but terrible service, average italian food, expensive - nearly walked out. Best was "Buzz". Very modern decor. Nice Thai food. Different set Thai meal each night 999B for 2, with lots of dishes. All the restaurants overlook the beach.

We took a taxi across the island to the main town one evening for dinner. Always taxis at the security end of the bay. Terribly bumpy dirt road. Town was a bit of a dump IMHO. Lots of cheap restaurants/hotels, massage and tatoo shops. Cheap for sure, but hardly idyllic. We came back fast and ate in Buzz. We did not return.

On our last day our boat transfer was 15.00. They kindly let us keep our room on and would not accept any fee for this!! They also arranged a taxi from Ban Phe pier to BKK airport at 2000B. Cost us 3000B on the way out. took 2 hours.

Downside - a bit pricey for Thailand. Problems with the drains - some sewer smells. Tatty rooms. Limited eating options.

Upside - fab beach, romantic sunsets, very peacefull. A relaxing place. Very courteous service except for "O" restaurant.

We started off disiking the place and after 4 nights adored it for its tranquility. Would return.

We booked 4 days at this hotel as a luxurious (expensive) retreat after three weeks of travelling in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. We left after three days and rebooked our favourite hotel in Bangkok (at half the price) for our last night before heading back to the UK. Food was good (but pricey) and who could possibly fault the beach and the warm sea? The accommodation was very tired and the overwhelming smell of drains and lack of sanitation actually made it impossible for us to sit out on our balcony and admire the sunset. Breakfast good, restaurant staff very efficient and friendly. Also, no WIFI (sadly, we needed to keep in touch with the UK), apart from very expensive charges in the reception area. We had WIFI in our room in every other hotel on our travels, however small and cheap. Not sorry to leave.

We spent 4 nights at the Ao Prao resort as part of a 2 week break across Thailand in early 2010.

Koh Samet (Samed) is a lovely island with a good mix of restaurants and bars for all ages, couples and families and we enjoyed our time there. The Ao Prao however is sadly not even close to being worth the money they are charging. The rooms are distinctly tired and in need of a serious overhaul and although the pool is pleasant, the adjacent beach and the sea are not clean. Their 'famous' sunsets were also, for the time we were there, not that special and shrouded in mist so that the actual sunset was not visable.

The Ao Prao is on the West of the island, whilst most of the island life is on the East. As the hotel does not run a shuttle one is forced to pay an inflated price at the neighbouring moped hire place or to walk across the island in search of reasonably priced food and drink as well as a pleasant ambience and (in our opinion) a nicer beach. All the activities the hotel provides can be found at up to half the price elsewhere on the island and are of a similar quality - they even charge over the odds for internet usage. The hotel restaurant prices are silly money for Thailand and there are only a couple of other choices nearby, compared with many many more on the East - we had our best meal of the trip in a tiny restaurant in this area.

If you want to go to Koh Samet, stay on the upper East side, around Ao Phai or Haat Sai Kaew. If you really want to stay in the Ao Prao area, try the hotels next door. Avoid the Ao Prao unless you enjoy paying more for less.

I stayed for a week-end with a friend and we both enjoyed staying at Ao Prao Resort. The room was nice and comfortable, the food good and most of all, the staff was very friendly. hotel guests can use the spa of Le Vimarn Hotel at the other end of the beach. Check-out was at 12.00 p.m. but as our ferry left only at 5 p.m., we were given access to a spare apartment to shower and dress. Highly recommended!
