“Spying Staff”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

Never again- With the blinds down in the middle of the day, my partner and I were enjoying ourselves on holiday on the bed.. After some time I looked up and two staff were invading our privacy- two young Thai housekeeping girls were looking through the blinds smiling and watching! We ran to the bathroom and were in shock.. The girls laughedand wouln't leave the front of our room for at least 20mins.. They continued to keep spying on us, we were so embarrassed. The continued to make jokes in Thai and laugh at us each time they would see us in the resort.
Not professional at all!

I have stayed 1 night, room is acceptable quality of food a la carte is quite good (not to expensive, considering all of the goods come by boat). Good location, fresh air ......
The most disappointed wask the breakfast, I never had in my whole live such a terrible food, all items was cold except the congee, meantime the some of the service staff playing with the mobile phones, no one supervise them, therefore I will love to come back ah Koh samet but not at silver sand resort.

I have stayed on Koh Samet many times in various locations. Silversands is one of the only places I have found to book and keep your booking! They also do not increase their price according to public holidays etc so it's consistent unlike other places. Lovely location next to the beach. The staff are not as attentive as they could be but they work from 6am to 10pm with a salary
of around 120 pounds a month, 2 days holiday per month so as someone else mentioned this may impact on their attitude! They also have no training and are often from Cambodia...I have been to Cambodia many times and they are as friendly as Thais so it's not their nationality that is the problem, perhaps the language barrier?! The food varies, thought the pizzas were good and the fried rice! Jeps Bungalows has good food! As for the dogs they are fed and taken care of, unlike other strays I have seen across the world. Beach is quiet by day and a party by night. I always enjoy my stay on Koh Samet and this place is convenient and located well.

This was a first time visit to this hotel after staying on Koh Samet many times. At different hotels and resorts.

Checking in good

Location first class.

Beach pedlars very few.

Waiter service for drinks very poor staff more interested on mobile phones

Other guests mainly young the Thais very noisy after midnight hotel management do nothing if you complain about noise. You have to silence them yourself which I did twice ( kids who'd have them the changing face of society.)

On site disco/ night club boom boom boom, until late but no one in the club!!!!!

No mosquito spray in the room & extortion price in the shop x3 normal 7/11 price.

Restaurant food good value & taste..

breakfast western style but stone cold .spoke to reception and sent email to management to place burners under the bain-Marie to keep food warm nothing done for the next breakfast spoke to reception in the morning but no response.

Hotel staff appear unfriendly & Unhelpful reason:- I discovered were the staff mainly comprise of low paid Cambodian workers who do not speak English or Thai other than the odd one.
Staff sit about texting or use mobiles as opposed to serving staff. Supervisor or manager sits using IPAD and not supervising staff.

Beach chairs you have to off by 5 pm they stand waiting to take sunbeds away and insisting you move.

Bar at night shuts at 10pm even when ther are still customers drinking the lights are turned off & bar closed.

The place is over run with dogs climbing on tables eating scraps left on plates, staff do nothing about it, plus the dogs sit begging for food while your eating. Must also point out some guests encourage by feeding the dogs.

In General would I come to this hotel again NO would I recommend to any age group NO.

I stayed here for 2 nights in August 2013.Other than the location and room, everything with the hotel is disappointing. First the good points. The location is on the beach which is the reason for my coming to Koh Samet. My room on the 3rd floor was a newly renovated room with LCD TV, and view of the treetop and sea. It has a small balcony with 2 chairs which was a good touch. Beyond this everything else requiring service was terrible. The reception was unfriendly and unhelpful. The restaurant staff was more interested in playing candy crusher and texting on their smart phone than serving the customers. The fried rice was too oily and vegetable hard (frozen?).The dried shrimp in the papaya salad was hard not edible. The dogs were forever waiting for your food. I ordered a banana crepe and the unsmiling girl making the crepe said she had no banana, made no effort to get it, did not apologize for this even as the Thai hawkers next to her on the beach were selling bananas !! The hot water shower did not work and failed to work after a technician came to fix it. Finally, I had had enough and moved to the hotel next door.

We stayed one week at Silver Sand and what I can add to the other reviews – it’s a hotel with a dual personality. The location and the rooms were fine but the rest…. it's as if someone put a in a lot of effort and money to build and furnish the rooms and then suddenly disappeared, abandoning the hotel to a disinterested manager.

Location: Ao Phai beach is much quieter than Sae Kaew beach (no jet skis) and almost a dream. There are three other restaurants at this beach and you can easily walk to the beaches on either side (there’s a pizza joint at Ao Phutsa plus a bar that offers great frozen cocktails in buckets!). Hotels offers sun beds and if you ask at the reception, you can also get a beach towel. Downside: small area for swimming only.
Hotel also has a mini market open till 10 pm (they even sell toilet paper) and two stalls selling pancakes, burgers and other food items that stay open until late.

By the way – the dogs are everywhere on Ko Samet, not just this hotel (and they’re not exactly strays either, since the hotels feed them and take care of them, they’re simply not chained up). They furthermore do not bother tourists other than lying under a sun-bed or stepping up to your table to beg for food. If you ignore them, they leave again pretty quickly. I would like to ask those who complain so much to consider two things. One, anyone who decides to leave behind the sterilized, hygienic Western world for holidays should accept that things simply are different in other countries – plus, there are many many more things to complain about if you want to talk about hygiene. And two, please consider what will happen to the dogs if people complain so much.

Room: Spacious, clean, modern look. Two complimentary water bottles daily. Toiletries – a little sachet containing one shampoo, a toothpaste and a bar of soap was there when we arrived; only the soap is replaced daily (no shower gel or body lotion). The bed was neither too hard nor too soft. Water pressure and temperature indeed invite you to try out all sorts of moves you never knew you were capable of (and the awareness that you’re showing with water that has a muddy color also invites your imagination to all sorts of lovely images of potential water-born diseases). Smoking inside the room is prohibited but allowed on the terrace. No phone in the room. I asked the receptionist if my parents could call at the reception and was informed they could, until 10 pm. When they did call, however, while we were dining at the restaurant, right outside, no one picked up (and they tried more than once). You only get one key (no keycard) which is annoying if you ever want to do something without your partner. Noise outside our room from a car that was parked close by and staff that kept chatting right outside our door.
Oh – and maybe ensure that your room is not close to the Silver Sand disco/club, as it can get pretty loud at night.

And now for the rest:
Right across our room (luckily, on the side of the entrance door and not the terrace) was the staff eating area. From early morning, it was loud – and all day long very smelly. We repeatedly found staff-members sitting on our door-steps when we returned from the beach. Hotel grounds overall seem neglected. Napkins carried of by the wind in the restaurant as well as litter (such as glass bottles) on the beach are not or only infrequently removed.
Check-in: We arrived via speedboat and discovered only then that you actually jump into the sea to reach land (so wear flip flops and short pants). Luckily, the driver and his assistant helped us carry suitcases out to land (and dumped them right where the waves hit the shore, getting them wet) but then we had to drag the suitcases to the reception through the sand, since no one from the hotel showed any interest in (possibly awareness of) our arrival. Check-in was unproblematic, the receptionist seemed bored. When I asked one male staff-member to help us carry the suitcases to the room, he seemed genuinely surprised at such a request.
Check-out: No good-byes or anything like that. No offer to assist us to carry suitcases to the beach or help us get them into the speedboat.
Staff overall: Hmmm … I wouldn’t call them impolite – simply not polite. There seem to be at least 15 staff-members, but they all seem utterly disinterested in doing anything but use their cell phones or chat. One day they simply forget to make up our room and bring fresh water bottles. It takes a lot of hand-gesturing to get someone to notice you during breakfast or dinner. Repeatedly, they forgot to bring something we had asked for.
Only exception: Mr Song at the beach-bar who was really friendly and even remembered what we had ordered the day before.
Breakfast: Some options but they are not kept warm. Fruit is exposed and thus covered in flies. Egg-station only offers fried eggs (prepared in little forms and thus the egg white is quite runny) and scrambled eggs (which are cold). Only toast slices, no other form of bread. Only perk: there is instant coffee besides filter coffee.
Dinner: Nothing breathtaking considering quality. Seeing the fly-covered breakfast-spread the next day, we were more than happy to go elsewhere for dinner.
Wi-fi: Wi-fi in the room was fine the first couple of days but then went down for three days or more. We kept asking and were told ‘Fix tomorrow’ and ‘Not fix today. Fix tomorrow’. When your work requires internet access, however, that nonchalant answer is not an option. Ultimately, we decided to go to other beaches both for swimming and dining where we could go to a café or a restaurant to access our mails.
Overall - might stay again given the specific beach, but would first look around for a better hotel deal at either this beach or Ao Phutsa (though from what we saw, hotels overall on Ko Samet lack the atmospheric chic or even the basic comforts of Ko Samui or Phuket hotels).
And a tip – speedboats depart even after 7 pm. The cab driver took us shortly before 6 pm to one pier, where the sales lady informed us the ferry had just left but we could get a speedboat for 2400 Baht per person but we needed to book now since the boat was departing in 20 minutes. The price seemed steep enough for a frantic search for an alternative, so I rushed off to the next pier. There, we found a speedboat for 200 Baht per person and simply needed to wait until 8 people had been found who (took about 45 mins).
