We visited the Eisriesenwelt on a rainy summer day. It was monday afternoon but I was surprised that there were too many visitors despite of this period. We had to wait to the lift about an hour! Be prepared to the cold in the cave and the long walking before, during and after the trip.

It was an amazing surprise visiting this cave!!! It was like entering in another world, full of ice and mistery. You have to walk a bit to reach the cave, but nothing so difficult, even for a beginner or for children. Just brace yourself because inside it is very cold even if outside it's very hot and sunny.

What an incredible experience! Dress warm! Most people were bundled up! We're from central Canada so walked through with a light jacket - but most people were in winter gear. Quite the hike up to the top, but amazing view of an amazing city.

WARNING this isn't an easy place to visit but is well worth the effort. Opposite the fantastic fortress at Hohenwerfen ( one hour by train from Salzburg) this is a real adventure . A ten minute bus ride up zigzag mountain roads. A 20 minute walk to buy your ticket -a very steep cable car trip then another 20 minute steep walk up the mountain edge to the top of a 2000 metre mountain with stunning views of the valley. The ice caves themselves are special BUT involve 700 steps up and another 700 down. It is seriously cold inside so you must take gloves coats and hats even in a midsummer heatwave.

One of the most intense experiences we have ever tried. My wife has asthma but survived by taking her time. If you have a health condition you really need to think if this is a visit you can manage as once at the top you are a long-way from any immediate assistance.

It is unusual to find caves made of ice, and it is amazing the different shapes it makes. Be prepared to walk a lot...!
