I have just returned from Kühtai, having stayed in the hotel Astoria for 7 nights. It has been a long time since I have been on a skiing holiday and I can honestly say that it was a magical experience. Kühtai is of course charming as such but staying in the Astoria made the skiing experience even more memorable. Here are ten reasons why you should chose the Astoria for your stay:

1. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. A very well selected group of people, who will warm your heart and do everything possible to welcome you and make you feel at home. The staff put a lof of effort into communicating in both English and German.

2. This is a family hotel and everything possible is done to provide young and old with the utmost comfort during their stay.

3. Counter to what some people have written, THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT! Roland Toff, the cook who has been at the hotel for over 7 years, is constantly perfecting and improving his cuisine. He is a star chef and his menus are truly exquisite. The finest ingredients are used and I was absolutely astonished that over the course of six days, I was able to enjoy all the most popular Austrian specialities as well as many international dishes. A choice of three different main courses on menu nights and an excellent buffet (even a seperate one only for the little ones), meant that every taste was catered for. The presentation of the food was excellent and the portions just right. The breakfast buffet was absolutely amazing, with a very high standard selection of continental breakfast. This deserves a 5 star rating. I have never seen such a selection of müsli, tropical fruits, yogurts, eggs and bacon, bread, jams, tea and traditional Austrian breakfast etc. all my life. Lunch and dinners always had a fresh salad bar, which was fantastic and important for a healthy diet. The themed menus added a surprise dimension to meals, because you would find out at breakfast what you would be looking forward to in the evenings. Included in a weeks stay was also the famous fondu night, where you had a choice between four different styles of fondu. An especially prepared room for the occasion, for a maximum of four families at a time, made this meal a very special and warming experience and an absolute highlight of any skiing holiday. Thumbs up for the food and a big thank you at this point to the cook, who is, in my opinion, a culinary genius.

4. This hotel is very much worth the money spent. No doubt, most families work hard during the year to afford a hotel like this but they return because the hotel is worth the money spent. This is very much the case with the Astoria. From the welcoming drink through to the goodbye, every second is accompanied by a personal touch.

5. The rooms are extremely cosy with very generously sized bathrooms and wc s. Lovely, warm bedding and wonderful fresh towels are provided every day and make for a relaxing and comforting atmosphere. Just what you need when you have been outside in the crisp weather for a couple of hours.

6. The wellness area is fantastic and funnily enough never over crowded, which you would expect in a skiing resort. A sauna, infrared chamber and pool, are always accessible to warm you up after a long days worth of skiing. You can get a massage against a fee and there is bike for warming up before you hit the piste.

7. The Apres-ski terrace is fantastic. Music and a Jagatee (Tea and rum) or a Glühwein (Mulled wine) are the perfect end to a days worth of skiing.

8. From the hotel terrace you can ski right down to the first lift. Brilliantly most pistes and lifts are somehow connected, which means you rarely have to carry skiis or boards around for ages to get to the next life.

9. Free wifi means that you can stay connected with the world during your stay.

10. Every question is answered and there is always somebody around if you need help or advice.

I highly recommend the Astoria for your stay and thank the entire staff for a wonderful winter wonderland experience, the most relaxed holiday in a very long time and an energy boost for the new year.

This is an excellent hotel, close to the slopes and providing excellent, buffet-style meals. The full board arrangement worked very well for us - it was nice to have a complete break in the middle of the day. We don't understand how some people thought that the food was inadequate.
We would agree that the grading of the ski runs is a bit on the optimistic side. Dark red should definitely be used as an additional colour! However, that said, by the end of our week we did manage to ski right back to the hotel on the Dreiseenbahn run - a real achievement!
Lastly, we had blue sky and sunshine for the whole week, barring one day of cloud and therefore flat light, but no rain or snow.

Just spent a fortnight in this very lovely hotel and cannot understand how others felt food was inadequate and left unsated! Can only imagine they went to a totally different place. Without exception all the staff were wonderfully helpful and obviously enjoy their work. On Saturday evenings there is a pre dinner welcome drink with a speech introducing all the staff, and I do mean everyone from the receptionist to the chamber maids, each head of section saying a little something to tell us their names etc. Nice touch this.
Food is quite exceptional, breakfast has everything you can wish for, what they call a skier's light lunch consists of 3 courses – sometimes too much to actually go back out on the slopes – and the evening meal is another 5 courses. We enjoyed a daily swim in the immaculate pool every day after skiing, towelling dressing gowns and slippers are provided free. Also free wifi is available in rooms as well as in public areas. It snowed every day of our 14 nights so to be staying in somewhere as nice as the Astoria lessened our disappointment at not being able to get out and ski.
Kuhtai is not the easiest place to ski, more suited to intermediates than a total beginner though the instructors are far better than French ones. They do a regular Wednesday evening ski show which is worth a visit. Also night skiing twice a week is available. The reds are not easy though wide and uncrowded, whilst the blacks aren't really that difficult. Have been to other Kuhtai hotels but our first time to Astoria which is definitely the best. All in all a wonderful stay, thank you.

Room Tip: Probably choose room on highest floor to avoid ceiling noise from children running about though not really a problem

We travelled to Kuhtai with Crystal Ski. Our first family ski holiday. The hotel had a very warm and friendly atmosphere. We felt instantly at home. The rooms were comfortable with good views. Turn down beds every night with chocolate on pillow - a lovely touch. The staff were extremely welcoming and tried hard to speak English. The food in the restaurant was excellent and even our fussy teenagers enjoyed the majority of the dishes. The Austrian wine was also excellent. Kuhtai is a lovely resort - perhaps a bit limited in ski area, but enough for us.

Great hotel, friendly staff. Travelled here with Crystal ski. Kuhtai is excellently located, being very high, but less than an hour from Innsbruck, it is not great for beginners as most of the slopes are reds (some I would class as dark red!), although there are some nursery slopes and a couple of blue runs. The piste to the Astoria is a red run, but does run to with 2m (a cleared concrete path) of the ski-room door and outside bar.
I found the food very good, with a buffet starter evening meal, followed by usually a served main, sometimes a buffet and dessert/cheese. The breakfast buffet was good with plenty of variety and the buffet lunch with salads and a small selection of hot food was great.
