Had a wonderful time in the stunning Dachstein area mountains! However the Gjaid Alm was a disappointment. We did not expect any luxury, did not mind small room, shared bathrooms, etc. However what it did lack was any kind of hospitality on the staff side. We had a double room. For 100 Euros, we got a small cold drafty room with hard worn out mattress and two tiny towels. We stuffed a sock into a hole in the wooden wall to stop the draft blowing on our heads. (Had to pay a 50 euros deposit to get a key to our room.) Smelly shared toilets. Did not use unisex washrooms. Food was disappointing . For 15 Euros buffet, we got a fried schnitzel and fried cheese with potato salad, sliced veggies, fruit compote...a bit too little for the money. (Based on their web site, we were looking forward to some good Austrian comfort food.) The breakfast was equally unappealing. Staff did not make any effort at all for us to feel welcome. It was a relieve to walk out the door and see the beauty around the smelly, anonymous, uninviting place. An ok. place to stay for one night, but totally forgettable. It did not spoil our time, we just laughed it off.
However in their favor, I have to point out that they did reply all my e-mails, provided all the information I asked for. However their website totally does not represent the reality.
Anyway, I would stay there again if I had to. The mountains are so wonderful that it really does not matter that much. But the staff could improve it a lot with a little more effort, just a kind word, smile, an air freshener in the toilet or make a fire in the nice big tiled wood burning stove in the dining room, which was cold on a damp, rainy evening.
