“Great outdoors, not so great indoors”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

Had a wonderful time in the stunning Dachstein area mountains! However the Gjaid Alm was a disappointment. We did not expect any luxury, did not mind small room, shared bathrooms, etc. However what it did lack was any kind of hospitality on the staff side. We had a double room. For 100 Euros, we got a small cold drafty room with hard worn out mattress and two tiny towels. We stuffed a sock into a hole in the wooden wall to stop the draft blowing on our heads. (Had to pay a 50 euros deposit to get a key to our room.) Smelly shared toilets. Did not use unisex washrooms. Food was disappointing . For 15 Euros buffet, we got a fried schnitzel and fried cheese with potato salad, sliced veggies, fruit compote...a bit too little for the money. (Based on their web site, we were looking forward to some good Austrian comfort food.) The breakfast was equally unappealing. Staff did not make any effort at all for us to feel welcome. It was a relieve to walk out the door and see the beauty around the smelly, anonymous, uninviting place. An ok. place to stay for one night, but totally forgettable. It did not spoil our time, we just laughed it off.
However in their favor, I have to point out that they did reply all my e-mails, provided all the information I asked for. However their website totally does not represent the reality.
Anyway, I would stay there again if I had to. The mountains are so wonderful that it really does not matter that much. But the staff could improve it a lot with a little more effort, just a kind word, smile, an air freshener in the toilet or make a fire in the nice big tiled wood burning stove in the dining room, which was cold on a damp, rainy evening.

First of all - this is a mountain chalet, not a hotel so you need to be prepared for a common showers and toilets, and small rooms with a modest furniture but you don't book a mountain chalet to spend your time in the room, do you?

The place have a perfect location - high in the mountains, you need to walk (10 min) even if you have taken the lift. Food is good, the common dining room is nice and warm, there are some tables outside so you can enjoy the sun.

Place is perfect for ski-touring and snow-shoes trips. You can hire snow-shoes directly form the staff, that will also help you in planing trips.

House is old, partly renovated.Rooms are small but have a great view !
There is only one proper bathroom (with 2 showers, that are paid separately). There is also a toilet on the first floor. That might be a problem when the house is fully booked.

If you are looking for a b&b/hotel you might be dissapointed, but if you know how the mountain chalets look like you will be happy with the location, nice and friendly staff and perfect views.

Room Tip: if the house is fully booked it will be difficult to get some sleep as the walls are thin and wooden...
