Hallstatt itself is worth the visit, it's place in culture and history cemented by the mining of salt for millennia. A tour of the mines, the museum are worthy and manageable in less than one day.

If you are an out of doors person, then the lake itself, and the mountains and their trails will beckon you to explore. The tram to the top of the Kreppenstein allows hiking in three seasons and skiing in the winter. The Ice Cave or Mammoth Cave allow for different adventure.

Great little towns and gasthaus' beckon one to stay and meander for longer than you may have. This region is sleepy compared to some, but another great slice of mountain life to others.

We wanted to see panorama of Hallstätter lake from Krippenstein but my wife is not able to take cable car, so we decided to try it climb up there per pedes. It seemed good on map, but reality: OMG, We have chosen direct pathway (diretissime) from cable car valley station and it was really very steep, pathway is evidently used very rarely, so marking is poor. I am 63 and my wife 60, so we were on the verge of forces when finally reaching Schönbergalm cable car station. But reward was worth of it. At the station there is pretty good restaurant, (please note the special Wiener soup was so rich, that it was impossible to consume anything else) and the view from there down to Obertraun and Hallstatt was fantastic. Next to the station is well renowned Ice cave, so it is good idea go there. And it is not necessary to take this terrible uphill pathway, as we found that from valley station to Schönbergalm exists relatively easy pathway. You can enjoy beautiful trip without overcrowded Hallstatt

The success of Hallstatt as a tourist destination only highlights the failure of Germany's tourism marketing. Hallstatt offers a typical view around the Bavarian alps and lakes, plus various tourists traps. A side note, get informed about the weather before visit. Rainy days will more likely ruin your photo ops in Hallstatt.

For those blown away by this over-hyped town, any anonymous town in Southern Germany would suffice. For those looking for magnificent views and fun recreations, Zugspitze and Eibsee or Königssee at the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden will redefine your perception of natural wonders.

That said, Dachstein - Salzkammergut is fantastic! The official guide is not only complimentary but also informatively accommodating! Don’t miss out the ice cave (Eishöhle) for a surreal walk on the thin ice. If you come in September, there will be concerts held inside of the ice cave. Swing at the "concert hall" inside of the Eishöhle is out of this world, literally and figuratively!

A weekend trip here is highly recommended! You can take your time to explore the caves, enjoy the hikes overlooking the area and take in the spectacular views from the five fingers (free viewing platform on the Krippenstein) or from skydiving.

In Hallstatt village there is the mining museum this is a great day out for the whole family, very informative and great fun. Good restrurants at the muesum. Easy to get to there is a train from bad ischel to Hallstatt.
Ice caves are found in obertraun, to get here the train leaves bad ischel to obertraun, then outside train station at obertraun there is a bus which takes you to the ice caves.
Here there is a cable car to the first level you then walk up 600m to the ice cave, they are fab very interesting, after which there is the mamouth cave to explore. Then there is the second cable car to the top of the mountain and if you are lucky there may be snow! Good warm clothing is needed and sturdy walking boots. Good restaurant at the first cable car station.
