“Good place to crash after the game or an event”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Stayed here after a wedding, the room was clean and spacious and the breakfast was filling and very welcome after a night of partying! The front desk was helpful. Only weird thing was walking from the hotel to the restaurant which is like a 100m further than the reception.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the football field

Clean and friendly, but in some respects a bit mixed.

The hotel is part of a larger development centred on a new football stadium, along with offices and (presumably) retail developments. So far there are a few floors with hotel rooms, another floor with some offices apparently connected to the local football team, an ground level covered car park (at no extra cost if you’re staying in the hotel) and a Dutch supermarket for homesick Dutchmen. According to the slogan on the supermarket trolleys the Sint Truiden branch of Albert Hein (ie the supermarket) combines Dutch prices with Belgian quality which maybe tells you more than you wished to know about national stereotypes.

In some ways the hotel is a bit of a ghost ship. The hotel lift is date stamped 2006 (from memory) but there’s still the faint smell of setting concrete in the ground level parking area. Only two sides of the football stadium have seats and in early 2014 there’s a lot of building going on on the west side of the stadium. (The hotel is on the north-side.)

There’s some sign that the hotel is short on management, too. When I arrived I was slightly surprised that I seemed to be expected to make my own bed: my mother would have been proud. Still, the next night someone else made the bed, so I guess the matter was one of oversight rather than of policy. And when I left, the bill they initially presented to me assumed I had taken breakfast at the hotel’s café. I hadn’t.

In other respect, the basics are fine. The rooms are reasonably sized, the TVs work and the en suite bathrooms do the necessary stuff. And on the south side of the hotel the view over the flood lit stadium as the team does its exercising is …. different from (should that be "different to?" - No) the view out of most hotels. (Non footballs fans might wish to check the match schedule before booking this hotel, especially of you expect your stay to include a Saturday evening.)

The location is a bonus. Central Sint Truiden (aka St Trond parmi les francophones) has become ever more hostile to motorists, with all the one way streets pointing the wrong way and a proliferating army of anti-parking bollards. The Stayen avoids all that nonsense. It’s (part of) the first big (huge, actually) building as you approach Sint Truiden from the Tienen (aka Tirlemont) (western) side of St Truiden and follow the signs to the town centre and rail station. If you’re not approaching from the western (Tienen) side, it’s probably worth getting to the western (Tienen) edge of Sint Truiden before attempting to find the Stayen Hotel/Stadium complex. And once you’ve identified the stadium, simply enter the supermarket carpark on the north-western side of the stadium complex (the car park entrance is marked “ah” though it also looks like “ch”) in blue on a white background.

Across the road from the hotel is a friendly fritterie. If your taste is more upmarket there are good restaurants in town. A bus goes past the door from time to time and did cost €2 for a ticket to the station (from which the town centre is a further 10 minute’s walk) but (1) Belgian bus fares went up at the start of February 2014 and (2) if you’re splashing out on a restaurant it probably makes sense to splash out a bit more and order a taxi.

I did take a look at the hotel-connected café at breakfast time, but didn’t have the patience to sit down and wait to see if anyone would emerge behind the bar: it was quite early. There is a seriously respectable bakery across the road where, if you’re similarly impatient, you can buy a croissant, offered with (“met”) or without (“zonder”) sugar (“suiker”) in the mix. Also sausage rolls and tantalising cakes. But no coffee: you’ll need to stop at a filling station for that

Room Tip: Southside to view the football stadium. Northside to view the road to Tienen

I didn't get to pick the hotel as it was for a seminar so the company booked it for me. Ended up paying 96 euros a night, stayed 3 nights. The hotel is ok. It's a little strange that it is attached to a football stadium but ok, it is what it is. This is a no frills hotel. They give you 1 bottle of water and that's it, no way to get another one but to go to one of the nearby businesses to buy one. The room was average sized and the bed was comfortable. TV selection was rather poor, considering i speak english and none of the local languages, as they only provice CNN and BBC news in english, everything else is mostly dutch with some french and german channels. The reception opens at 7am and closes at 10pm, if you need something in the middle of the night you have to talk to the security guard who couldn't do much for me. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard hotel, clean and quiet.

Location wasn't the best, though. It's literally in the middle of nowhere with little to see around the hotel, and at least a half hour drive away from Leuven so if you're on foot you're stuck. Next time i'll plan ahead and stay in Leuven.

Room Tip: no such thing as a better room as they're all the same. You either get to look over the stadium...

Great breakfast, quiet, clean, and very comfortable beds. About a 15 min walk to downtown, or a reasonable 10 Euro taxi. Our room's thermostat would mysteriously reset the temperature back to 25C occasionally, resulting in a somewhat hot room. Very pleasant and accommodating staff.

A different location on the side of the football stadium but quiet non the less (can't vouch for staying on the day of a game though!) It' s a clean functional hotel that serves a purpose. A concrete block of a design, no frills room but the bed was comfortable if you like firm support. Could be stuffy in summer as ventilation is minimal.
The reception and staff do a job, there's no extras there too! Parking is underneath the hotel and the bar / restaurant is at the other end of the block, again adequate but a bit a of trek first thing in the morning. The centre of town is a 15 / 20 minute walk in with plenty of choice to eat. The bakery opposite the hotel does a good range of patisserie etc.
The hotel serves a purpose and no more.

Room Tip: Football stadium one side - main road the other if no match on the stadium side is quieter, with lit...

The hotel itself it is ok for a 3 stars ; the only minus I gave is related to the fact that all the windows are fixedd or blocked and as a consequence you don't have access to fresh air ....Instead good breakfast and quit , my room was facing the footbal courtyard so , from this point of view be carrefull to close the curtain when you're in the room.
