My wife and I were last at Eprerheide in 2000 when our children were still young and we enjoyed it back then. We decided to go back as a couple for a cycling/ wellness break and booked a small studio type two-person apartment. The apartment was perfect in every way. Spotlessly clean and in first-rate repair.
In the past we have holidayed at a lot at various Centre Parcs and Sunparks and Erperheide is certainly one of the best. As a cycling base it is right in the heart of the cyclists' paradise that is Limburg, with it's network of numbered and easily followed routes that take you through some beautiful, peaceful and safe countryside. Perfect for experienced and inexperienced cyclists alike.
We use the park as a base visit surrounding towns and cities and tended to eat away from the park itself as it can be pricey. However, if you have small children and self cater, the facilities and activities available for children of all ages make for a very pleasant and economical holiday. We were there during school term so the park had mainly young families with children of preschool age. The evening entertainment was of course aimed at this age group and my wife and I enjoyed having an evening drink whilst watching the toddlers and older children dancing their hearts out to well selected music by good quality live and disco acts. Priceless!
We also enjoy wellness and sauna breaks and we were looking forward to this at Erperheide. However this proved to be a disappointment for two reasons.
Firstly, the indoor/outdoor jacuzzi area has been boarded over, depriving the thermae of one of it's primary attractions. No explanation was given to us as to why this had happened.
Secondly, it appears that there is a section of people who think it normal to have saunas whilst wearing clothes! In a change to the way it has always been before, Centre Parcs has decided to designate two days of the week a 'swimwear' days whilst the rest remain as 'naked' days. I believe this to facilitate the reluctance of their growing French clientele to strip off.
This is not a major problem and I understand their desire to maximize their market. However, on the days that are clearly signed as 'naked' days, people continued to come into the the sauna area with swimming costumes. This made the rest of us who were enjoying a sauna in the traditional manner feel very uncomfortable. On one occasion a French family of mother, father and four teenagers sat with their costumes on whilst the teenagers obviously enjoyed the free show! No member of staff was there to challenge them. On other days, we did see staff who were conducting water checks have a word with others about wearing costumes, but they were ignored and there was no follow up action. So; beware of weird people with clothes on!
