“Surprised and Delighted”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014 via mobile

What a fabulous welcome we received by the son of the proprietor. He explained that they were not serving food other than breakfast. It seems really rude but we have momentarily forgot his name but he gave us a map of all the restaurants in De Haan and recommended a few. We were then given our room which perhaps was a little disappointing as we had thought the balcony would have had some sort of view but this was a very small matter. The actual room was very spacious and spotlessly clean. The bath room was to die for and the radiators heated up very quickly.
The breakfast was excellent and very varied and plentiful. This was our first trip to De Haan and it certainly will not be our last and would happily stay at the Hotel Astel again.

Although the hotel doesn't have a sea view (like most hotels in De Haan) it is only a few steps from the sea front walkway and beach (both of which are very nice and clean). There are also small shops nearby and plenty of other hotels with restaurants so there is quite a lot of choice for eating (though many of the menus are quite similar - brasserie style). We ate at the Astel the whole time - breakfast, lunch and dinner - for two days as we liked it so much. The breakfast buffet has plenty of choice, is well presented, and the staff are happy to cook different types of eggs to order. They say the lunch and dinner menu is not like a full restaurant but we found plenty of variety (small and larger dishes), good quality food and presentation, a nice selection of beers, wines, and other drinks, everything at reasonable prices, and very friendly and prompt service - hence we kept going back.

Our stay was during a school holiday week with our children and grandchildren; there were quite a few families with children staying and the staff were very accommodating with the adults and children. The hotel has been well renovated throughout, and is modern, bright and clean. The rooms are well equipped and laid out and although they are not large they are very comfortable with very nice bathrooms, comfy beds, and a fridge, though no tea/coffee making facility in the rooms.

There are only a couple of parking spaces at the side of the hotel but we had no problem finding parking on the street across the road (no payment required). There are about 6 or 8 steps up to the two entrances to the hotel so keep that in mind if you have difficulty with steps. Once inside there is an elevator to the room floors.

We ordered an extra (child) bed plus a baby cot for one of our rooms and this was all taken care of efficiently though it cost an extra EUR45. The room price, which includes breakfast, was ok and compared quite well with other hotels in De Haan (which is not a cheap place to stay) on a quality basis.

We were very pleased with our stay, would definitely return, and really liked the friendliness and efficiency (and multilingual ability - French, Flemish, German, English, and probably more!) of the staff.

I'm just back from a 2-night stay and thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. The staff are delightful: informed, smiling, friendly, efficient. Breakfast is taken in a lovely bright room. There is a selection of cereals, breads, pastries, eggs, juices (very good quality orange juice with bits!). Everything is displayed on stylish crockery. I had a standard room which was a generous size with two single beds together. The bed was narrow enough but comfortable all the same. The bathroom was enormous, newly decorated and very stylish. Huge bath and vg shower, shower gel and shampoo provided. The only reason I have rated this hotel very good rather than excellent is because it has no private parking although I found a spot without much difficulty around the corner. Would stay here again.

We had a lovely week-end at the Astel-hotel. It located very nearby the beach in the De Haan-village. It has been renovated recently in a very stylish way: absolutely suberb ! It's being run by a friendly family that treat you as a King. Accomodation is super as well as the breakfast.
We definately will return !

This hotel is situated approximately 100yds from the beach area of the Belgium resort of De Haan. I would judge his hotel to truly be of 4 star quality, everywhere within the hotel is absolutely top class and even the toilets are worth a mention for their absolute cleanliness. Whilst the accommodation is quite costly for British standards (room charge to accomodate two, around £105 per night) it does include an excellent buffet breakfast. We have stayed at this hotel on two seperate occasions now (the return stay a recommendation in itself), our last visit was at he end of November. There is a tram that runs every 20 minutes and costs €5 for an all day pass (€7 if purchased with the tram driver). we like nearby Ostende where they had installed an ice rink and various covered stalls selling delicious Belgium waffles, hot chocolate, and mulled wine. Travelling in the opposite direction you must try Blankenberge which has a really impressive beach area and a multitude of bars. We are lucky that we live on the East Coast of England and frequently cross the North Sea on P & O ferries from Hull (look on their website for some amazing deals to Belgium or Amsterdam), which are currently running from now until the end of February.

Room Tip: As with most European hotels there was no kettle in the room so if you like a warm beverage bring yo...
