“Sunparks:DeHaan - Nice Place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

This is our families second visit to Sunparks, Dehaan. We have found in the last 12 months the site has improved/ been updated quite a bit. We stayed in basic accommodation which has what you need for a self catering holiday. Bedrooms decent size, ours smelt abit stale when got there but nothing some air freshener and an open window didnt fix. We didnt use onsite catering so cannot comment on it but menus seem to have a good choice. There is only one tennis court now which was a bit dark, but playable. The kids play area is great, the pool is clean and fun with slides and jacuzzi. Lots of wildlife around the site and location to Beach and Dehaan and Tram Stops satisfactory. The kids love it here and most staff are friendly and helpful. Shop on site is reasonable but there are shops such as Aldi & Smatch (5 min drive) in Dehaan as well to get 'weekly shop' from.
In summary: A nice family holiday location thats reasonable in price and only an hour from Calais

We stayed at a Sunparks last year (at Oostduinkirke) so knew what to expect.

We chose the Exclusive accommodation package again, but the villa this time wasn't quite as nice as last year - some mould and damp in the toilet and bathroom caused bad smells and there wasn't quite as much room.

However, the facilities and location were excellent. Our two children loved the Aquafun, both the indoor and outdoor pools and we also used some of the sports facilities. Location wise, we cycled to the next town along from the park - only 15 mins away - and found a good little ice cream shop. It was also great for a day trip to Bruges (only about 20 mins drive and fairly cheap to park in the city centre).

A great village with good and very clean facilities. My family and I enjoyed a brilliant week even despite the mediocre weather. The only advise to others with young children would be to take a baby gate as I was worried about the safety of my fearless 3yr old on the very open stairs.

We've just returned from a week at Sunparks in De Haan! We had one of the lakeside lodges and it's been one of the most relaxing holidays we've had in ages! The lodge had a dishwasher which is a must with a family, and the lounge patio doors open onto the verandah which means you can get up close to the ducks and carp! Having twin teenage girls, holidays can be more like an endurance test, however, this hiday they've laughed like children again! We all enjoyed the pool and slides, we hired a bike, we went bowling and most importantly we just enjoyed some time together! It was a grat base to explore Belgium, we went to Bruges, Ypres, Blankenburg and De Haan. We only ate out once at the pizza place which was fine. Down side was the bowling alley was like a sauna! Shop was well stocked and staff were very helpful! Would definitely recommend to people and would definitely go back! I had some reservations before we went after reading some reviews but I can honestly say we didn't have any real complaints! My advice would be if you want Center Parcs go to Center Parcs! If you want accomodation like you have at home, stay at home!

We spent a week with 4 adults and 2 toddlers in an “Exclusive” house for 6 (the “exclusive” just means that the beds are made and towel packages provided, but that was worth it).
Before we booked we called to ask whether the house we wanted to book was equipped with child-guards for the stairways (all houses are on 2 floors). We were told that child-guards for the stairs were available at reception upon arrival. When we arrived we were told that there were no child-guards for the house we had booked, only for the lake-side houses (would you want a lake-side house with small children?) and the people on the telephone “had no right to give out this information”. Terrific. So we had to erect barricades to keep the two-year old from falling up and down the stairs. The next drawback is the mattresses. No one slept well the whole week because the mattresses are merely very old, soft foam rubber rectangles, well worn in the middle. We all had back-aches by the end of the week. The arrival and departure times are definite and inflexible. We watched a team of cleaners enter the house across the road at exactly 10 am on their day of departure and put all their belongings out next to the street in plastic bags.
The park centre is horrible. In May with outside temperatures around 18° the centre was hot and stuffy and there didn’t seem to be any ventilation or air conditioning at all. The roof is all glass and it heats up horribly. I can’t imagine what it’s like in the summer. Forget eating there. The “food plaza” offers a very basic buffet for the horrendous price of €24.50 for adults, €12.50 for children. The food looked cheap and unappealing. We ordered “take out” food from the Pasta and Pizza on our first night there, as there was nothing else available in the evenings other than the buffet, and it was the worst food I have ever tasted. Seriously. My husband ordered “penne Stroganoff” and was given tagliatelle with some indefinable brown sauce and a few mushrooms, no meat. We found good restaurants in Wenduine, particularly L’invité, which has a lovely children’s corner (separate review).
There is a fairly decent outdoor playground for the children, nothing special. There is also an indoor play area, but again it totally lacked fresh air and ventilation and there was a horrible smell of plastic and rubber which made my eyes burn after about 30 minutes. I’m not sure it is all that healthy for small children. Be prepared to walk long distances from the houses to the centre and to the parking lot (cars are not allowed in the grounds except to load and unload on day of arrival and departure), depending on the location of the house.
It was very quiet at night during the week, but very loud party makers descended on the area on the weekend, and it was extremely loud on Friday and Saturday nights.
The positive points are the Aquafun pool area, which is quite good for children (not so much for adults) and the store, which has a wide range of stock. You can get what you need to eat there and fix it in the kitchen in the house, which is definitely the best option, given the quality of the food available at the park’s “restaurants”. (There is also an Aldi on the road to Blankenberg). The Café du Jour is fine for a drink, but rather expensive.
The houses themselves are inexpensive, but all other activities other than the free playgrounds and pool cost quite a lot. Our house had a very large sitting room with fireplace and a good-sized yard around it with patio, table and 6 chairs and 2 sunbeds. We were visited regularly by ducks and rabbits, which thrilled the children.
The furnishings were fine, if only the mattresses had been more comfortable.

The basic villa was tired and shabby in parts, but was clean. Would recommend not going for the entry level option. The park is well situated and bringing or hiring bikes for the week enables enjoyable, easy cycling into pretty resort De Haan for the beach, supermarket etc. The park has some good facilities but the pool and indoor play are shabby in parts ( large areas of flaky paint comjng off through lazy river, duck tape covering hole in bouncy castle), but still does what it says on the tin. The shop/ eating area offers a good selection of facilities but again is quite dated (reminded meof a 1970s public sector building - library or school). Positives were it was quiet, good villa plots with private garden, good location for day trips and cyling - Brugge, Ostend, aswell as De Haan.

Room Tip: Upgrade to lessthan basic villa

I have stayed at this Sunparks resort previously, and decided to treat my partner to a relaxing weekend away.
We arrived after midnight due to traffic in the UK, surprisingly we were met by a friendly receptionist at 1.30 am who quickly handed us our welcome pack.
I had opted for the exclusive villa for a few euros more, this included our own sauna which we really enjoyed.
The accommodation was very comfortable, with all mod cons including dishwasher and coffee maker.
The villa had its own garden with sun loungers, tables and chairs.
There were flat screen tv's in the lounge and bedroom.
The resort is very quiet at night, ensuring a good nights sleep.
