“One of the best on the Belgian coast”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

My wife and I were there with a Groupon offer. Excellent and knowledgeable staff throughout. The room (junior suite) was weirdly decorated with a very strange piece of TV furniture but had all mod cons. Plenty of closets and nice big terrace. Comfortable bath room. Nice big swimming pool but a bit dark and moody. Rest of the wellness just acceptable. Problem was more with the patrons than with the equipment. Because there is nobody keeping an eye on things hotel guests (using it for free) do not take care, and just make a noisy mess of it. Breakfast was outstanding, in a roomy location and with decent coffee brought to your table (no messing about with self-service machines).

Room Tip: The junior suites are spacey and well-equipped.

We arrived to the hotel and we we're greet by Geert at the front desk. Advised that this Thursday they had a buffet. I'm not fond of buffets but this was over the top. Duck, lamb chops, beef and other meats. Good vegetables etc. deffinetly worth the stop. We stayed that night in the hotel.
Very good too.

Stayed one night whilst travelling and this is a real find. About 5 minutes walk from the beach and in a slightly elevated position. Built in 1992 with an Edwardian designed themed restaurant and other interiors a mixture of modern with the old incorporated. The room was excellent with an interesting view across De Panne and sea in the distance. Dinner and breakfast were just right with inventive use of flavours and presentation (dinner). Unfortunately set menu and us veggies not taken account of (as ever in Europe other than Italy:() but a la carte sorted it out with a supplement. If we had told the desk on booking we would have been catered for - so our fault. Breakfast - huge range buffet - magnificent. Now the real treat was the swimming pool and all the spa facilities. 'L' shaped pool and bathrobes provided in all rooms to make the transition easy. Parking on site was not a problem and a good zonk was had. Certainly will use again and enjoy the rest of the resort town which was saw a little of in the morning.

Very nice hotel near the beach. Nice wellness facilities, not too expensive. We had a nice breakfast.

The standard room was quite large for the price.

If somebody is looking in the area for a good price-quality solution, we think that this is the best house in the whole area.

We will return for sure.

Room Tip: Ask for the junior suite. A little more expensive but you have a balcony.

This is just to share a dissapointing experience with the sports and pool facilities (as part of the Sanocenter of the hotel) of the hotel. We did not stay at the hotel, so this review only concers the paid use of the pool and facilities in the basement. Unfortunately, for 15 EUR each, there are no towels available (so you need to bring them yourself), the announced 28° pool water must have been at some other point of the day and the desired hammam was not longer working (talking to the manager about this, he said that after 6pm you need to redirect yourself to the nude part of the center in order to use another hammam). Also the sauna stopped being operational apparently as of 6pm, although we arrived just after 6 at the reception, nobody informed us of this. In order to use the smaller water-massage-pool, you need to bring into the pool area 1EUR coins!!?? Some of the lights in the ceiling do not function which gives the whole area a bit of a grey impression, especially on a rainy day... no, sorry, for 30 EUR, we were not pleased at all with the offered facilities, apart from the new gym. But know that, if you do not have a room in the hotel, there is no hot water shower available for the pool or the gym. The available shower rooms were in the Sanocenter with a separate access "to be rented after 6pm"... Very dissapointing, moreover that one needs to cross a corridor passing by the restaurant in order to go to the pool area... in your swim suit... must be a weird view for the, otherwise very nice, restaurant customers looking through the glass access door of this corridor... Not recommendable as a separate treat from the hotel although there are many roadsigns in the neighbourhood directing you to the Sanocenter (paying wellness treatments, which are probably much better than the pool and sauna facilities). To come back to this issue of using the nudist part... it is indicated on the access door that children are not allowed, although we saw a family with small kids entering this side.... so, what to do? This really needs clarification or an update of the organisation and infrastructure.

Geert V, Manager at Hotel Donny, responded to this review, 10 October 2012
Dear,

Hello and thank you for your review concerning your experience in our Sanocenter.

Unfortunately, my wife and I, the two managers of Hotel Donny, were on our 2 weeks travel of the year ourselves, and thus not present when you visited us. I notice some explaining might have lacked at your arrival. Therefore, I will write you this response.

The 15 euro gives you access to the pool and the new fitness from 12 o'clock until 9pm, and guarantees sauna and Turkish bath access from 12 o'clock until 8pm. Comparing with other whole-afternoon Spa packages, we know that this is really not expensive, and so the lending and cleaning of towels and bathrobes is indeed not also included for non-residents. Towels and bathrobes can however still be rented for a total cost of 5 euro per day. We thus do provide 2 sauna's and 2 Turkish baths, to make sure that the ones who do not prefer the traditional nudist spa-experience, still have the opportunity to enjoy the other units with swimsuits allowed, until 6pm. After that, as many people start to prepare for supper (at our restaurant or elsewhere) and make no more use of the facilities. For adults, as previously mentioned, usage of the traditional nudist part is still possible a bit longer. The nude area is only accessible with a key, given at the reception. We communicate to parents that this is a non-children area, as you also mention the sign. We also provide the key to that area to adults only. We are sorry to hear that parents still allow children in that area. We are however, not in a position to monitor the access point at all times. We hope to avoid this problem as much as possible with mentioning the adult-status at the reception, installing a lock and putting up signs.

As stated in a previous response, the pool conditions are monitored very closely and daily, as VLAREM II guidelines are followed at all times. This is obligatory (see http://www.spinonline.be/data/artik/vts/155/zwembad.pdf - page 15 show temperature guidelines). Our pool (categorized as 'Big Pool') temperature has to stay equal to or under 28° C at all times. For the comfort of our guests, we have kept the temperature stable at this 28° C for over at least 1 year. We are sorry if this subjectively felt as too cold, but we are bound by these rules by law.

For the use of the jet-bath-treatment in a separate bath, a 1 euro coin indeed has to be inserted in the machine console. It only operates on command when wanted. This is the first time in over 10 years we hear a negative comment about this, which we now noted. We are sorry that you found the use of this treatment inconvenient.

As to the lighting in the pool, this will, along other things, be renovated in a few weeks from now. The whole ceiling will be replaced and equipped with led-lights, the pool tub awaits a brand new vinyl and coating as well as color-changing Ral-lighting (also LED),... We hope to welcome you later on after this investment and make-over, to see if the new lighting is to found sufficient.

After the use of the gym, pool or sauna and Turkish bath, both cold and hot showers are free to use in the non-nude and nude area, as well as the new ones in the Sanocenter. The hot one next to the pool has at the moment a technical issue for which custom-made replacement parts have been ordered 1 month ago and is soon to be fixed. the other hot showers, work nonetheless. It is possible that communication went wrong on this point, what is to be rented (and not only after 6 for that matter) are the 3rd (both new) Sauna and Turkish bath in the Sanocenter, as these are not turned on on a regular basis though only on demand. We are sorry if communication with the person who replaced us at that time went wrong on this point.

The correct way to access the pool and locker rooms is by taking the elevator or stairs in the reception to the Sanocenter. After changing in the locker rooms, and entering the fitness, a stairs brings you back up tot the pool and its spectator area. The direct hallway along the restaurant that you mention, is for spectators (not in need of the previously described locker rooms) and our staff for ordering drinks and snacks.

We are sorry that you did not have a fully pleasant experience, possible due to our absence and maybe incomplete communication at that time.

Hoping however to welcome you some other time (maybe after the renovations) in the near future,

Sincerely,

Geert Van Guyze
