“Excellent birthday lunch, lovely setting and good service. Good for a stopover or day trip.”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

Great place for a lunch on a day trip or on the way further into Belgium. Oldest building in Veurne and very well renovated. Nice sun trap terrace at the back with sofas for pre-meal drinks or to eat outside. friendly staff with good English. Service was good, not at all slow but also respectful of our chosen pace, not too fast, not too slow. Not the most extensive menu, but traditional Belgian stew was good and there are a range of lighter meals and snacks as a cheaper option. Good beer selection with a couple of good ones on draught as well as decent bottles. Just off the square which we liked.

“Disappointing diner with family”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

There were only 2 other tables occupied when we arrived at the restaurant and by the time we left, we were the only people there, maybe the low attendance had something to do with the poor food quality (see below)?

But first the positives:
- Very nice location in a house with a history!
- Extremely friendly service!

Negatives:
- Unfortunately the nice location, friendly welcome and service could not make up for the below average food
- We first ordered a tapas dish. It contained cheese, "headmeat", some chorizo, olives and the likes. We received a huge portion, and although the individual ingredients were not bad, there was absolutely no added value from the kitchen to the dish
- I had a sea food pasta which was huge (I could only manage about half of it). The taste was bland and the seafood was not fresh but consisted of a cooked up, pre-packaged frozen seafood mix. When the dish arrived it looked fine but the taste was just not interesting at all and after three bites I already felt like stopping
- Someone else at our table had the bisque (kind of a fish soup). Again the taste was bland and worse still, the (very large) chuncks of fish in the soup were all of the deep frozen "prefab" type
- We also ordered some veggy pasta which was almost uneatable, it tasted like someone had dropped a load sugar in it and again we left more than half of the (enormous dish) uneaten

In all this was a really bad experience. Based on the other reviews found here on tripadvisor, I assume that maybe we picked a bad day to have diner there, but maybe it is better to not serve anything than the serve food that is really that bad!

“Back again”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

Came here for a romantic birthday meal in early December. We had eaten here in July so we knew the food and ambience of this restaurant was very good. There was a special seasonal 'game' special on the menu which looked very good, but their shrimp croquettes and house speciality stoofvlees merited a return visit. Don't know how they do their frites, but they are superb - unfortunately on this occasion l didn't have room for the Veurnse Meringe Tart. The next morning we bought a whole one from Vera Hollander's shop on Pannestraat, and a couple of portions 'to eat now' from a bakery in Ooststraat. We'll be back!

“Extraordinary place and food !”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

A very romantic resto/brasserie just off the market square in lovely Veurne. Warmly welcomed by the lady of the house, you'll be overwhelmed by the historic and romantic interior of this restaurant. A magnificent bar will attract your attention. You'll enjoy delicious and fresh food, prepared and served with great care and craftmanship. The home-made beef stew (stoofvlees/carbonade) prepared with the Sint-Bernardus-beer (very close to Westvleteren-trappist) is served with a fresh salad and freshly cut and home made fries (no deep frozen French fries !!!) and home-made mayonaise. The cheese croquettes are excellent and of great taste, also served with a fresh salad. Excellent and great quality food for very reasonable prices. And the Sint-Bernardus-beer (a local well-known dark trappist/abbey beer) is served "on-draft" (!!!) and tastes ever so deliciously.
Whenever you're in the Westhoek-area or even visiting the Belgian coast ... make sure you make the detour, plan a short visit to Veurne and make sure to enjoy an excellent lunch or dinner at "The Garden of Heaven", set in the 2nd oldest building of Veurne ... You'll be in heaven afterwards !

“Veurnse meringue pie - delicious”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We had an evening meal here in July. The restaurant is in one of the oldest buildings in Veurne. The meal was absolutely delicious and exceptionally well presented; extremely good local beer. Try the shrimp croquettes and, if you've got a sweet tooth - the local speciality, Veurnse Meringe tart - layers of meringue and butter-cream.
