“Luxury accommodation but some drawbacks”
Reviewed 1 September 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Overall our experience of La Grange is very positive. The location couldn't be better as it is bang in the centre of Meursault. The quality & finish of apartment and the quality of the fixtures & fittings are second to none. We were most impressed by the spaciousness and luxurious master suite. In addition we were impressed by some of the small touches such as Nespresso coffee and top quality toiletries.

There were a few little details we found irritating eg blunt knives - an issue that was raised by a previous reviewer - although a knife sharpener has now been provided. There were a few general maintenance issues needing attention such as main door lock needing difficult to lock / unlock and glass patio door also needs a tune up as difficult to open. Just minor things that need to be sorted out and to be fair if no one mentions them then the owners won't know!

2 bigger issues that could spoil one's enjoyment concern soundproofing and the courtyard.

The apartment next door has an adjoining door which is not soundproof. Our fellow guests in that apartment were far from noisy but we could clearly hear their conversations and no doubt they could hear us too. We could even hear corks being pulled out of bottles! We did mention this when we were there and the owners said they were aware and had a plan to sort this.

The courtyard is potentially a bigger problem depending on your perspective. What it says on the website is "wide glass doors open on to sunny gravel courtyard with seating & dining area". Technically this is true. But it's not that clear that it is shared and overlooked by La Grand Maison. We were fortunate La Grande Maison was not occupied during our stay but we would have been concerned both about noise disturbance potential and lack of privacy. In addition, whilst it's also true that 2 cars could fit in the "secure parking area" again it's not clear this is shared (could lead to issues if the big house has more than one car) nor is it clear that the gravel courtyard and the secure parking area are one and the same thing! Also, the reality is if 2 cars were parked in this area then the outside relaxation space of La Grange is massively compromised - our car took up a lot of space by itself!

Lastly there are no comfortable outdoor chairs to relax with a book and glass of wine so take your own!

Management Response

Many thanks for your comments Bill. We are pleased your overall experience of la Grange was positive and fitted your holiday needs.
The connecting door was originally left as a normal installation as we had anticipated that large families could rent both le Coin and la Grange and have easy access between the two. But it is true that they are rented more separately than collectively so we have now installed insulation to eliminate the noise factor. Concerning the courtyard, we are very sensitive to the use of the common areas and work diligently with guests if both properties are occupied to ensure that comfort and convenience is maintained for all. For example if car parking within the courtyard is an issue for anyone there is ample free car parking. Your point re cushions for the outdoor seating is well taken and it will be addressed.

“PERFECT HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN BURGUNDY”

As we stepped in to the brilliantly renovated space, I knew I'd made the right choice. La Grange is absolutely charming yet modern, clean, bright and couldn't be better located in Burgundy. One block to town which offers not one but TWO boulangeries, a small supermarket, a butcher, an epicerie (which we didn't manage to make it to), a few restaurants (none of them super special, but they're convenient!). But most of all, the town is perhaps the most beautiful small town in the region! The charming streets, the vineyards right in town and surrounding the town, the beautiful church and City Hall--utterly picturesque. The town did a lot of excellent renovation of curbing and sidewalks a few years ago, making it super neat and clean.

Back to the lodging. The kitchen was terrific for cooking small evening meals. (Two minor complaints: the knives weren't sharp, the water was burning hot.) The bedrooms were lovely. The bathrooms, very well done. The whole thing just worked perfectly for us. Su and David, who renovated (and manage) this and several other projects in the area, really know what they're doing.

“Perfect accomodation & village in Burgundy.”

The managers Su & David were very welcoming and went out of their way to assist us on arrival. The property La Grange now has two bathrooms (one is en-suite to the main bedroom) and in total three WCs. It has lots of character and has been restored to a very high standard, note the photos of the second bedroom do not do it justice.
There is an abundance of cookware for at-home meals although Mersault restaurants are a very short walk away as are two excellent boulangeries. We loved the village, it was quiet yet lively, pretty in every respect and is surrounded by vines. We would love to come back, one of the nicest villages in Burgundy and a lovely property.

Liked best: Location and amenities of the property.
Liked least: The very hot weather in mid August. The security code for access was embedded in the driving directions (agency information).
