“Week end in paradise”
Reviewed 6 October 2013 via mobile

When arriving there the pace is going down and you feel already in total relax. Walking around the park or the vineyard is refreshing as ever. The quality of staff, design and room is top notch. If you want to spent few days in paradise while being in that region, that's a must visit place

Totally let down by the slow dismal begrudging service which was a disgrace.

Beautiful rooms and food a delight. Rather typically Relais & Chateaux the bar is not properly manned the dining service abysmal. Needs a management change.

We stayed for a week in early July in a junior suite. The hotel is only about ten minutes off the motorway from Marseille and about twenty minutes from the centre of town. The entrance is through iron double gates and then down a drive where you stop for the staff to unload your bags. The whole check in was efficient and friendly. We were shown to our junior suite which is in a separate building just a step away from the main house. The junior suite had its own terrace through which you entered it. This has two loungers and a table with two chairs. For privacy there is a hedge which shields you from view. The junior suite might be sold as a suite in other hotels. You enter a sitting room which has a tv, computer corner with Apple Mac and its own toilet. Wine and a fruit plate were awaiting us. There was also a Nespresso machine with a choice of capsules which were free to use.
Then you walk through to the bedroom. Huge and comfortable bed with ample wardrobe space and mini bar. Evian water is free for guests and is replaced frequently. The bathroom is superb. Another toilet in a room within a room, a good size bath , two sinks and a huge walk in shower for two people with two overhead showers and wall mounted showers too. The toiletries which were supplied in abundance are Hermes.
Breakfast was varied and eggs are cooked to order. It is served on the terrace either by the swimming pool or overlooking the grounds. Dinner is served on the same terrace. We only ate once in the hotel. The meal was good and in particular the first course was exquisite ( sardine escabeche).
The gardens are beautifully kept and there is plenty of room. The spa is set at the edge of these immediately backing onto the vineyards. As with the room it is well designed. It has an indoor pool with a well furnished terrace immediately outside it. This is a good quiet spot to escape to.

The overall effect is of a well run establishment which wants to look after its guests.

The hotel is situated in a former wine castle but totally renovated. In fact it's still a wine making family. The rooms are amazing and with a lot of design in it.
The swimming pool, in the garden, is rather small but nice. The breakfast is variated. The restaurant is really good but the fish and the meat was more than once a little overdone. Good wine list with some nice home made wines 'Verchant'. The staff is really helpful and friendly. A 15 minutes walk (or short drive) brings you to the 'tramway', the easiest way to go to the center of Montpellier.

I loved this hotel! The property is gorgeous, relaxing, and just begs you to enjoy being outside enjoying the sun and air. The room was very well setup with a comfortable bed, great bathing area, and an acceptable desk and TV. Storage for clothes and luggage wasn't perfect, but it was more than sufficient. The mini-bar was well stocked and the room service was amazing. Along those lines, the hotel restaurant was absolutely amazing. I cannot think of many restaurants anywhere which left as strong an impression on me as the hotel restaurant at the Domaine de Verchant. The prices were about in line with the quality of the food, which is to say they were pretty high, but the food and service was stunning.

I strongly recommend the Domaine de Verchant to anyone, especially couples looking for an EXTREMELY romantic holiday.

This was a stopover for us to explore the South of France. We flew into Barcelona and It took us around 3 and 1/2 hours to get there from the airport. (It could be tricky to find however, but our GPS got us there). We were upgraded to a room with a huge beautiful terrace and there was bottle of wine and a fruit plate waiting for us in the room. The room itself was not that large, and not great closets, but very modern and cool decor (tricky light switches). I loved it! The hotel is in the middle of a vineyard, and is an old chateau, there is also a spa (which we did not use) and a pool. We did not get breakfast, but I was able to have coffee in the room (out on my terrace) each morning. We had dinner there one night which is not to be missed. It was delicious. I thought the service in the hotel was excellent, everyone spoke English and was very kind and helpful.

The hotel is around 15 minutes (maybe not even that long) into town. We only spend one afternoon/evening in Montpellier, it was ok. But, then again, we didn't really spend too much time exploring. We drove to Arles one day which was around 45 minutes away. Loved Arles! Go see the Rodin exhibit at the Ancient History Museum ... it was a highlight of our trip (I think it is there until September 2013).

Room Tip: We had steps ... not sure if there is an elevator. Let them know when you book!

We found the property via Relais Chateaux's website which instantly sets the bar of expectation high so, being a five star hotel with matching prices, it's only fair to be a little more detailed with this review:

The Good - The initial contact via email and booking was efficient, polite & accurate; the arrival/check in was friendly and welcoming and a personalised welcome letter & gift in the room was a nice touch; the rooms are nicely decorated, quirky/individual and with good amenities; the Spa facility was excellent and the staff very welcoming, multi-lingual and informative; the food & presentation in the restaurant in the evening were both very good.

The Not So Good - A few other reviewers have mentioned the location and, for our stay, it was fine although the approach is through a business park and clearly, over the years, the Domaine has sold off much of their land for greater profit than could be attained through their vines, but once inside you are far enough away not to notice; whilst well appointed (with a lots of gadgets) there were some basic oversights like no heated towel rail and curtains ill-fitting and therefore not blocking out the light in the morning; arriving for an aperitif we sat for a long time with staff members coming & going without being ask if we would like a drink or offering the wine list/menu for the evening.

The Poor - The room we stayed it had no "normal" lock - you were provided with a padlock and told to lock it from the inside when in the room which, in a fire could be very dangerous - on the outside the door to use the lock you had to be at least six feet in height to be able to do it - really can't understand how this passed a fire inspection; housekeeping staff came to do a turn-down service at 7.15pm and, rather than say they would come back, handed over pillow chocolates and the next day's weather card at the door; we had booked dinner in the restaurant and, for some reason, they put most of the guests in a freezing cold conservatory area with two or three portable heaters that did nothing to warm up the room; breakfast was cramped with far too may tables squeezed into a small space and not enough staff to provide an efficient service; ordered a second coffee for it to be served in the same dirty cup as the previous one.

We did enjoy our stay BUT the 'devil is in the detail' and, unfortunately many of the details were missing that should be second nature to a five star property.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a proper locking door
