“convenient stop-off the highway in Normandy”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

We discovered the Trois Rois by luck when tired of driving... The logo of Logis de France was instrumental in our choice. Comfortable room and bathroom en suite, three price options. The restaurant lhad an oldfashioned look and the menu seemed a bit complcated and expensive, but eventually we enjoyed our meal greatly. The service was absolutely perfect. In the morning, a basic breakfast but congenial talk with the manageress who conveyed a lot of information about the rebuilding of the city (completely destroyed by both german and allied bombing in WW II. It took fifteen years to built it all over again, starting with the church and ending with the city nhall !

Room Tip: Three price optionsn, according to the size of the room.

The three of us dropped in here much by accident; we had gone to a recommended place that turned out to be closed. So we had our misgivings. And the menu looked a bit pricey. But all three of us ordered "oysters cooked three ways". And were thoroughly happy. The amuse bouche was fascinating -- a foam of what turned out to be simple sweet red pepper. The oysters were fabulous. I'm a serious foodie, and we all agreed that this was one of the most memorable meals that we had in France. Very creative, beautifully presented, and delicious.

We stopped here for dinner on the 28th May, prior to traveling on the night ferry to Portsmouth. Villers-Bocages is a convenient place to stop. This is our second such visit. The staff are a little stuffy and ask the usual stupid question 'have you reserved a table ?' when there are obviously plenty of available places in the dining room, and there are no tables marked as reserved.
The menu is overly complicated, but the standard offer (29 euros without salad and cheese) seemed reasonable, though perhaps 5 euros too much. The starter was smoked halibut with some sort of lentil, cream and nut confection in a shot glass. The smoked fish was a little dry, perhaps it had been waiting about since lunch time? but the dish was otherwise imaginative and tasty, so I was not too disappointed to miss out on the snails. For the main dish I had the tripes de Caen, which another reviewer here derided. Perhaps he is unfamiliar with the dish, or just doesn't like tripes? Mine was typical tripes de Caen and excellent of its kind. My wife had a pork dish that was well cooked, though nothing special, and lacked vegetables, though it certainly didn't lack meat. The dessert was good; best of all, though, was the amuse bouche, initially it seemed a weird combination – a crème brulée (though obviously without any sugar in the custard) flavoured with foie gras. However, it was quite delicious and I shall try my own version of it at my next dinner party - with a little more salt, and perhaps a tiny touch of nutmeg.
Overall, easy parking, good service (apart from them not having the snail dish). Size of dishes served would satisfy a Norman appetite. Can't comment on the rooms as we didn't stop, but we would certainly eat here again - if only to get another excellent idea for an amuse bouche - and to try some other items on the specialist menu.

Dissapointing. We went there for lunch. The old fashioned but clean classic interior gives the impression that this was once a fine restaurant, but today we were treated to a poor performance indeed. In short: friendly staff, mediocre yet expensive food.

The room was expensive -- and for that price one would expect more space than just enough room around a double bed to get dressed; a little air conditioning on a hot day (because opening the window attracts noise from the road and the kitchen fan); a room that did not smell of stale smoke; and enough silence to spend a restful afternoon and evening. Our room was situated opposite the office where incessant loud phone calls were conducted; and next to the conduit of the kitchen fan which rumbled on from five or so till eleven.

The restaurant was pricey too, but served good food, good wine all in very good style.
