The Hermitage Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 4 Vernon B&B and Inns

If you are going to visit the area and Giverny you must stay here. Several years ago we visited Giverny and met Ariane as we hired her as a tour guide through Monet's home and gardens. Returning this year, we discovered that she and Alain had developed a Bed and Breakfast halfway between Vernon and Giverny. What a wonderful discovery! It is a wonderful old home that Alain developed himself with genuine authenticity. The Hermitage is only a 20-30 minute walk along a wonderful path behind the house to Giverny. Take advantage of this as parking during tourist season in Giverny can be difficult. There is nothing about Giverny and the area that Ariane and Alain cannot tell you about. The rooms are wonderful, cozy, and authentic. The breakfast, brought to your room by Ariane, is just the best. Locally sourced products are exclusively used when available and it is served with such style! As the Hermitage is just over an hour from Charles de Gaulle airport in Roissy, this is a must stop!

We would thoroughly recommend a stay here, but if you intend staying one night, treat yourself to at least two or more. Alain and Ariane were fabulous hosts. It was raining when we arrived and Alain made us welcome with coffee? The heating was on in our room, which, despite it being June, was very much appreciated. The house and lodgings are so unusual and the garden beautiful and peaceful. A path runs at the back of the house; turn left and the short walk takes you into Vernon - we can recommend L'Envie for a meal - and turn right on the path and there is a longer, but lovely walk which takes you through the village of Giverny up to Monet's garden.

We were lucky enough to leave our boots behind, so we had to call in on our return trip through France. Alas, there was no room available this time, but we spent a very pleasant hour with Alain in the garden, Alain having made us coffee. That alone made our 14 hour trip home memorable. Well, that and the inadvertent trip around the Parapherique in Paris, but that's another story. And, avoid driving through Rouen if you can possibly help it - nightmare!

Thanks Alain and Ariane.. We hope to see you again on our next trip.

Room Tip: We stayed in The Birds room and it was charming with more than enough space for the two of us.

Arianne and Alain were excellent hosts. One large room for parents and good room for us upstairs. Wish we could have had more time to stay a few more days. Great breakfast. Very close to Giverny and local restaurants.

My husband & I spent a night here, so we could check out Monet's gardens. A wonderful B&B - gorgeous old building, great room (try to get The Birds room - it's worth the few extra euros).

It's about halfway between Vernon and Giverny - which is simply delightful. This way you get the peace and quiet of the countryside, but you're just a stone's throw from Monet's garden on one side, and from Vernon on the other side. I would highly recommend hiring bikes from Vernon fro a couple of days - you could easily ride between the 2 towns and the B&B. We didn't and walked everywhere - which was great, but in retrospect bikes would've been better/easier. We went on a Sunday night and not many restaurants were open - I'd recommend a different night if you can.

The breakfast at the B&B was great, and the hosts Ariane and Alain were really lovely, knowledgable and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it unreservedly. They book out well in advance so get in quick! And stay for more than one night if you can!

(side note - we really enjoyed doing the Monet puzzle in the games cupboard!)

Room Tip: The Birds room! Spacious - gorgeous.

A very wet day indeed visiting the garden's at Giverny was put into perspective once we arrived at L'Hermitage. Alain's kind offer of tea and biscuits, a dry space and the luxury of a hot shower soon put the smile back on our faces. Comfortable bed, delicious breakfast and we were soon on our way. It was a perfect break from the rather spartan life we had been having campervanning - which would be great if the weather hadn't been inclement almost without ceasing. Thanks for cheering us up!

I have never been so comfortable - in my own home or a family member's home - as I was in Ariane and Alain's beautiful home. Writing in my journal while seated at a breakfast table full of croissants, fruit, cheeses, coffee, juice and yogurt while a perfectly formed, coral-colored rose greeted me on the other side of lace-covered curtains...I could simply dissolve into this place and never resurface!
For one like me who enjoys discovery by foot, the location is perfect. Situated halfway along the footpath between Vernon and Giverny, either direction will deliver important and enjoyable cultural, aesthetic and historically significant encounters. Ariane and Alain were generous with their knowledge and affection for the region, and recommended an inconspicuous restaurant in Vernon where I ate divinely! The history of their home and their loving attention to its restoration is evident in the hospitality and respect that they show to travelers who are likewise attracted to the area. I cannot say enough about my wonderful experience, and I hope to return again and again.

Room Tip: The only available room was The Birds, which is far too big for a single traveler, but was PERFECT!

We stayed 3 nights to visit Monet's garden & house in May. The experience was most enjoyable. This is a beautiful old house, being restored. (This did not impede on us at all) Our hosts Alain & Ariane were delightful & nothing was too much trouble for them. The rooms were excellent, having better amenities than some 4 star hotels we have stayed in. There was such an attention to detail in the 2 rooms we occupied. Each was different but lovely. The breakfasts were huge & varied - a feast to start the day.
It was close to the gardens, which were delightful to visit. This is a lovely part of France. The only downfall was that the restaurants were closed when we arrived on a Monday, but the hotels were not, so no real problems.
I would thoroughly recommend this delightful B&B.
