The hotel building dates back to 1910.
It was completely rennovated recently.
There are elevators (lifts) to reach the upper floors (see note).
The good things:
- quiet rooms
- comfortable bed
- scrupulously clean
- hardworking staff courteous and discreet
- restaurant with very good (sometimes excellent) food but not an enormous number of plates to choose from
- well positioned for outings to the Bavarian forest (Bayerische Wald).
The things which are not so hot for a foreign visitor:
- only a few people speak or understand English.
This can lead to some humorous exchanges of grimaces and sign language.
If you have no knowledge of German at all bring a dictionary because you will need it!!
- Limited means of payment accepted. This gets explained at the end of this review.
As we were there to visit the Bavarian Forest, breakfast at 7AM was important.
Wildlife is no longer visible after 9 AM except in the more zoo like areas.
We ate breakfast here twice.
On both occasions we had one of the best breakfasts anywhere hands down.
The omelet (similar to a very thin pancake or crepe for those who arrive from English speaking lands) prepared by Mr. Brunner humself right in front of you at 7AM is truly a dream.
It is not just matter of quality and quantity (both excellent and abundant) but of ingredients.
Although you will usually find good ingredients at high level 4 and 5 star hotels around the world what you will find won't be comparable to what you find at Eibl-Brunner.
I am not complaining about the Hiltons, Sheratons and Marriots which usually have a lot to offer but with a sort of "industrial" touch or scale.
Eibl-Brunner is a family run country side hotel which benefits from outstanding local produce being available in abundance.
Eggs, dairy products, fruit, meats, cheeses, marmalades, jams and jellies, honey are all in a league of their own. Even the local beer is a treat. Wine is expensive.
Parking can be a problem when the hotel is full.
A lot of people go to Frauenau using their own cars.
There are even numerous visitors from the nearby Czech Republic (about 30 KM by road) which also shows how attractive and well known this locale is for non locals as well as for locals. Many of the restaurant dinner patrons were not staying at the hotel.
Eibl-Brunner is fairly easy to reach road wise but a bit out of the way unless you deliberately want to go there. An up to date GPS will come in handy.
The restaurant's kitchen shuts down at 9PM (2100 hours). We arrived at 9:30PM and they still prepared an excellent cold dinner based on hams and cheese for us. Your table with a glass name tag with your name on it at the restaurant is part of a hospitality style you rarely see any more.
The hotel offers a fairly large swimming pool, sauna and other wellness facilities.
As is usual in most hotels, pets are not allowed but I understand that the hotel management will try to help if necessary.
As there is in every review there is one minor blemish relating to means of payment.
They don't accept VISA or American Express cards but only MasterCard and cash.
Eibl- Brunner really should adopt other well known means of payment.
This is a must go to place that you won't regret.
Book ahead and remember to warn if you plan to arrive late.
