We were heading for Ludwig's castles (Neuschwanstein) in the mountains and decided to take a different road. That led us to this beautiful valley not far from the castles.

As we entered the valley, the first town was Oberau and we thought why go further? We spotted this little alpine hotel and we were able to get a room for the night. The owner was most helpful and wanted us to see the room before we agreed to take it. I personally have never encountered that, but it was refreshing to see how he wanted us to be happy.

The room was clean, certainly large enough for our needs. Again, you might want to ask for another pillow! We were on the main floor but I did not see if there was an elevator.

There is a restaurant attached at one end. We had some dinner in our room that night but the breakfast was well done. Lots to eat as you come to expect in Europe.

If you take a walk you will be blessed with the most wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Had we time, we would have explored further into the valley to the other towns.

Upon checkout, the man did point us to the castles by taking the mountain road rather than back to the motorway. We were very happy to take his advice. Much more scenic to say the least. Very twisty and the locals are comfortable with going faster than the tourists!

Room Tip: It is a small place in a small community so any room is good.

This was not a hotel, it was a hostel with zero facilities and no views but was sold by Booking.com as a room with a balcony and views. It had neither and also lacked any drinks making facilities, no drawer units and one door on a two door wardrobe. I can only equate it to the YMCA in Shanghai that did not pretend to be anything other than a backpackeres dorm. We could not even stay for the first night and managed to find a far superior accommodation (an apartment) for similar money. When we complained we were told that the manager could not understand English. Do not stay in this place.

Room Tip: Don't bother, there are none!

The place seemed relatively good, but was missing a few things. Our room was advertised as an Apartment, but there was no kitchen or kitchen appliances of any kind when we arrived. When we commented on this, we were told that in Germany an apartment means a large room. (This has not been what we have found in the past 8 years of traveling around Germany. ) The next thing missing is the fitness room. They claim to have one, but it is not a room with fitness equipment, exercise machines, etc...It is a small wooden thing that looks like a 2 person sauna. They do have a full size sauna and a 2 person hot tub, but keep in mind it is seldom open. Other things missing would be curtains on the sky light to keep out the early morning light, a mirror in the bathroom, a shower that you can stand up in, a working hair dryer, available parking, and decent lighting throughout.

On a better note what they do have is basically clean and possibly from the most recent decade. The food in the restaurant and the breakfast buffet has been very good. The location is good for a short drive to Garmisch or Oberammergau.
We had a 2 bedroom apartment. It was on the top floor with a balcony. There was a large master bedroom with a German style king bed ( two singles pushed together), a large living room area with a hide-a-bed couch, a bedroom with two single beds, and a bathroom with very little head room above the toilet.

The hotel on the outside boasted all sorts of facilities including a sauna and whirl pool. When on investigation we were told it was not open in the summer ! The bedroom was not ready when we arrived and so after waiting we were shown to our room. As commented before there is no lift so cases were dragged up the stairs. When entering our room we were knocked back by an awful stench of what can only be describe as "drains" On further inspection the bathroom was grubby with black mouldy sealent around the shower. The loo seat had a large chip in it and again was not very clean at all. The beds were awful my fiend ended up sleeping on the dirty floor due to the noise the bed made every time you moved and the awful bottom sheet. It was very scratchy and not at all comfortable. We were only there for two nights which was plenty !! Don't choose this hotel please.

We were travelling as part of a large group, we upgraded to stay in this establishment wouldn't have bothered if I'd seen it first! When we arrived we were kept waiting in the rain as it wasn't check-in time for 10 minutes! No lift, no porter so everyone has to drag their own case up the stairs. Our duvet was wet, we were given another one still wet! The third was wet too the ownwer wasn't bothered in the slightest when we complained, I slept under a towel because even though we tried to dry the duvet with a hairdryer it was still damp! Bathroom mouldy and dirty, cracked sink, dirty tiles. Sockets over-loaded in bedroom, one socket taped over. meal was dreadful, pork in a cream sauce was a dollop of spray whipped cream on the gravy!??? would you believe it? MICE strolled on the corridors/balconies! (pets?)

We stayed here as part of a group booking for the Oberammergau Passion Play for 2 nights. It was OK but no more. The bathroom was very poor, mouldy and peeling sealant around all the bathroom fittings, mosiac tiles which looked ingrained with dirt otherwise the bedrooms were alright. Very strange bed linen (bottom sheet) which wasn't cottonn/linen - my wife thought the texture was similar to one of those skin remover pads for legs, etc. but we slept well. The meals again were just OK - nothing special. The sauna wasn't in use - the stairway was partly blocked and when we tried to have a look in the basement where these facilities are - there was someone asleep in a bed there!!

We had a front room but wasn't affected by traffic noise. Can't comment on prices as we booked as a group it was a package price.

The area around Ober is wonderful, scenic, fresh, clean and a great little walk around the village of Oberau and it's stream. Pity the hotel couldn't match it. Will try somewhere else next time.

We had 2 eBay-vouchers which could only be spent together with a 3 day interval. The rooms were spottlessly clean. The staff and roommaid add a lot to the friendlyness of this hotel. There is a wellnessroom with a bubblebath, an infrared cabine, and a sauna which was out of order (was already out of order 6 months ago). Breakfastbuffet with plenty of choice. Make sure to have a room in the sidewing, at the front there is day and night noise from the fillingstation across the street (heard guests complain about that!). One can have dinner, but this is not cheap compared to other restaurants. It is 13,80 Euro for a 3 course menu (but it is soup + a small sate with rice cooked in currywater + a pudding or 2 scoops icecream, drinks extra), what is not mentioned is that an extra VAT has to be paid (which, for 2 people is an extra 5,40 Euro).Nearby lots of sightseeing, and even Mûnchen can be reached within an hours' cardrive. Would recommend.
