“Lovely Hotel with bags of character”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

We were 6 motorcyclists who stayed here for 3 nights. The hotel supplied us with a lockable garage for our bikes at a small charge. The hotel is 400 yrs old but you wouldn't know unless told. It had all of the mod cons. It has loads of character, is kept very clean and the maid service was daily. The breakfasts were great, a very good selection of all the popular continental style goodies. It is centrally situated in the "chocolate box" village that is Monschau, I won't look further than this If Iwere to return.

Spent one night on way south, however was impressed with Monschau a great place to visit, or as we did use as a stopover, lots to see and do. Hotel idealy placed, though parking can be a problem. Room we had was large with " period furniture " depicting the image wants to portray. It was very well maintained with the furniture " dustless ".
People need to be aware though that the restaurant, good, is run seperately from the hotel and does not accept credit cards. Could pay hotel bill with card though.
Breakfast room bright and welcoming with good choice.

Room Tip: Book parking in their garages saves hassle.

We arrived in Monschau later than we intended (9 pm) and could not for the life of us find this hotel! There are very few streets in town but I recommend having a little map with your hotel marked on it if you are driving in, or just remember to turn left right after the first parking garage (not first parking lot, theres a small garage when you enter town) which somehow we missed. Finally my boyfriend got out of the car and just ran around until he stumbled upon it! The owner/reception lady didn't speak any English and we don't speak any German, but she walked us to her little garage where we parked our car and we managed to check in and communicate enough through gestures and drawings when breakfast was and where to go in town to eat, and that we could leave the car in her garage for an hour or so the next day after we checked out.
We really liked the old fashioned door keys and hallway decor, antique furniture in the room, the bed was comfy and huge for Europe, and the bathroom was modern with great water pressure and a heated towel rack. There was no hair dryer and I couldn't be bothered to try to ask for one.
It was very quiet, we didn't hear any other guests or noise from outside, except for church bells.
Wifi was free and worked well in our room.
Breakfast was simple but good and filling. I loved the little breakfast room with the matching tea sets and dishes.
Others have commented on the unfriendly reception, she wasn't overly smiley or anything but she was polite and I feel she tried to be helpful even though there was a significant language barrier. We found that not many people in this town spoke much English but we don't fault them for that, its Germany after all, and we managed :)

Stayed here for 3 nights in rainy July. Well situated ancient hotel in a quite street in center of Monschau. Our "suite" was situated on the 3rd floor (no elevator) and was spacious with whirlpool. Small TV was 20-th century model and only German-speaking channels were available. The "wine cellar" like most of the building is over 400 years old; it is worth visiting but I would not recommend dining, unless grilled salmon with a topping of orange and orange slices is your favorite. Moreover, before you can order, you get a warning: no credit cards accepted and you cannot pay the bill when checking-out of the hotel; the bill has to be settled immediately!
Checking out is no fun when the very unfriendly lady of the house (as already stated in other comments) gives you instructions how to pay for the stay.

We traveled to Germany for a few weeks in early December. Monschau was our final destination. What a hidden gem! We were just enchanted by the darling city!! It was snowing our 3 days there and it was aobut 11 degrees! Super cold and super charming. We loved the Christmas market. We traveled with our 2 young boys (3 & 1) who loved the gingerbread, bratwurst, and kinder-glu-wine! The hotel is located on a steep hill, which can be difficult to drive to in the snow. Parking is 5euro/day in the public garage at the entrance to town. As for the hotel staff......I won't say they are unfriendly......just shy. My husband is fluent in German and we had delightful conversations with the owners. They accomidated us with a baby crib and breakfast every morning. Our room was up 3 flights of stairs, but if you pack light, it's not a problem. The breakfast was tasty, and the hot tea was wonderful. They

We stayed for one night in August. I parked in one of the car parks just outside the centre then walked to the hotel. The receptionist (owner?) was very unfriendly and never smiled once. She didn't speak any English but I had enough German to understand her directions to get to a nearby garage where you can park your car for 8 euros per night,

Monschau is a lovely little town and well worth a visit. The hotel did have lots of character (400 years old) with many original features. It has a basement restaurant which is only open weekends so we didn't see it but it looked nice in the photos. The room was ok. Breakfast was poor and as the general atmosphere was so unwelcoming we didn't stay long.

This hotel seems to rely on the 'old' status but almost all of them in Monschau are. Reception was rude and unhelpful and we felt as if we had disturbed them, no smiles or any welcoming information at all. The room was well outdated, not quaint and romantic, just undecorated and tiny; uncomfortable, old beds. The bathroom was really tiny and needed decorating...old 1970's decor throughout with an 1960's vintage electric heater! The breakfast room was like a mortuary, silent and average breakfast, totally uninspiring. Before others shout that "it's a historic hotel", we stay in scores of them every year (with our work in the travel industry) and they can be full of character and great hotels....the Graf Rolshausen is certainly not great and you can do much better in Monschau.
