We had a beautiful night's stay in Ostuni at the Sommita to start our trip in Puglia. Ostuni is absolutely gorgeous and incredibly special - do not miss it. La Sommita was perfect from start to finish - great staff with a genuine desire to serve and assist, and they do so with appropriate measures of propriety and warmth. Didn't get to experience the Spa as we only stopped over for one night. Stayed in room 3, which is a duplex room with a stunning shower and bath. We loved it, but maybe not great if you're not as 'upwardly mobile' (could not resist the pun).

This is not an easy hotel to find. If we weren't with friends from Bari (who obviously spoke Italian), we would have never found the hotel by ourselves. We had the Cattedrale suite (no view) which was very comfortable for my husband, 2 sons, and me; highly recommend this room for a family of 3-4. The beds were comfortable, Frette linens, Bulgari toiletries, powerful air conditioning (my husband likes the room so cold), and a grotto-like bathroom. The outdoor communal space is lovely and inviting. One of my complaints was that the water had a faint sulfur-like odor, but I don't know if that is because of the hotel's plumbing or the overall water in Ostuni. My other complaint was that the free wifi in the room was for only 2 users, but we had 3 ipads and a computer - 2 of us were happy and the other 2 were out of luck. Many reviews highlight poor service, but we experienced exceptional service. The staff couldn't be more accommodating. We missed breakfast one morning, but the wait staff and kitchen staff were so obliging. They even made an American-type of breakfast for our sons. Not an inexpensive hotel, but we will return.

Its hard to drive up to at the top of the old city ,but the do have paid parking below at the back where the shuttle can run you back and forth. Its called a spa but really isnt one no sauna's or pool just massage . Although the restaurant is somehow rated as a Michelin 1 star i wouldnt be in a hurry other spots in town are better and less pretentious . Its small about 15 rooms comfortable but not large for the rate they charge .

This resort is nice, in a quaint town. Pictures make it look a lot better.

Service was terrible and ruined the entire experience. We felt very unwelcome and uncomfortable throughout the stay. We stayed in several hotels during our 2 week stay in Italy and this hotel was the most expensive and worst service. It is very sad, because the property is nice, but I cannot emphasize enough how the service ruined our last three days on our honeymoon.

We went to the Michelin rated restaurant for our last night. The service was so bad we witnessed a couple leave before getting their dinner, we should have done the same, but decided to stay (big mistake). The waiters we so rude by demanding we order several courses of food, we ended up being charged for food we did not order. From the moment we walked in to La Sommita to the very last dinner was horrendous. There have to be better places to stay.

DirezioneSommi, Responsabile reception at La Sommita Relais, responded to this reviewResponded 19 July 2014

Dear Mr. Mike Z,

first of all we would like to thank you to choosing Relais La Sommità for your Honeymoon, and we are surprised and disappointed with your review, thank you anyway for his notes which are still a subject of daily briefings.

However, we would like to analyze some points:

this hotel was the most expensive: sorry you know the rates at the booking time.

I cannot emphasize enough how the service ruined our last three days on our honeymoon:

The services at reception? the shuttle? the housekeeping? sorry this is not easy to understand.

The restaurant:

Service was so bad we witnessed a couple leave before getting their dinner: this couple leave before order the dinner...may be for some other problem not related to the restaurant services.

The waiters we so rude by demanding ... or formal as required by the etiquette of a Michelin-star restaurant?

We ended up being charged for food we did not order:

It is our pleasure offer to our Guests some entre Free of Charge to introduce the courses.

From the moment we walked in to La Sommita to the very last dinner was horrendous. There have to be better places to stay:
Tripadvisor is a good instrument...but complain in the end of the holiday...is to late.

regards

Spent three nights here on our first leg of our Puglian tour! We were greeted by a warm welcome from reception staff, and taken to our room. The accommodation provided ultimate comfort in both communal and private areas, and nicely decorated, mostly in a monochromatic, neutral palette. Breakfast is in plentiful supply of local delicacies, also eggs freshly cooked in any form are available; with dining mostly outside during the warmer months. Dinner is available if booked, but please be aware that the michelin star style supper comes with a hefty price tag! Do ask if there are other menus beside the set ones offered! The hotel advertises spa treatments, these need to be booked, as there is no resident therapist, also the pool shown on the hotel's brochure/ website has since been converted into a cactus garden! The nearest place for swimming is a local beach which is a short drive away. However, this hotel comes with high recommendation, and we would consider re-booking if returning to Ostuni, as the location is superb and relatively central to amenities that Ostuni has to offer.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2, which was located at the inside of the building, if you require panoramic views...

This is a beautiful hotel located in the most beautiful part of Ostuni. It is certainly falls in the "Old World" category as even a current-day, regular sized car is too big to be brought up to the front of the hotel. Be aware that you will have to call the hotel in advance to have them send down their special car/cart to pick you up with your baggage at the bottom of the hill (this never presented a problem).
We stayed here for 4 nights for a wedding in June 2014. The entire hotel (15 rooms) was taken up by our wedding party. The first night the air conditioning in our room was not working well & was uncomfortable. As the second night approached and still the hotel had no solution to the AC problem, I was forced to threaten that I would have our friends/relatives from all the 15 rooms leave poor reports about the hotel on every single website available on the internet. Management finally "saw the light" and we, at the (hopefully, slight) inconvenience of one of our wedding party then changed rooms and we were fine. The second room was cool, comfortable, big & very nice. My only complaint about the second room was that the very large bathroom had two stairs next to the jacuzzi and, after my husband came out of the shower, even though he had dried off on the towel, the floor was wet & I fell down the stairs due to the slippery floor. I was very thankful that I did not get hurt (be warned!).
I am very surprised that the previous review on this website, "safa_in_England," also mentioned a problem with the air conditioning. So it seems that this hotel should have solved this problem by the time we arrived, but they did not. This air con problem happened with us as well & they acted as if this was an unusual, one-off situation that caught them by surprise (again, be warned!). The good side to this whole story is that the front desk manager, Vitto, was a great guy who is a very hard worker and I have to say that I appreciated his help (read here: don't kill the messenger!).

Room Tip: Our room on the top floor (Number 9 or 10, I think) had a great view with a beautiful little balcony...

We booked two rooms for a one night visit on our way further south. Very modern, minimalist but well designed. Perfect location within the city. One issue we had was the aircon in room 12 didn't work and the room really felt like an oven, management provided a complimentary bottle of chilled wine but unfortunately they were fully booked and couldn't provide another room.
