“A good choice”

The hotel is very well managed and maintained. I liked everything about it, especially the view. It is away from the bustling pier. The fjord facing rooms all have balconies. Early in the morning, before the commercial cruise ships arrive, enjoying the majestic yet pretty landscape - the lush green, the waterfall and a lone sail boat passing by was the best experience.

Having seen the other hotels down by the cruise ship harbour in Geiranger 'town', I can only say thank goodness we chose this one. It might not be the most modern hotel in Geiranger with its old style TV and slightly soft beds, but it is very homely and beautifully located, away from the frantic tourist bustle that such a lovely place inevitably attracts. Our room had a small, but private balcony from where we could watch the passing boats against the mountain backdrop. The view is lovely. Add to this freely available machine coffee, free parking, friendly service and an extremely nice dinner buffet at a reasonable price and, for me, this hotel is the only place I'd consider in Geiranger.

Geirangerfjord is very beautiful. But perhaps it is too beautiful for its own good as its fame means that it is often full of cruise ships and other tour boats. This means that the small town of Geiranger is often swamped with tourists. So much so that I imagine that many of the hotels offering fjord views often offer little more than a close up view of a cruise ship! But the Grande Fjord Hotel is different. Being a couple of kilometres from the heart of the action, it is peaceful and comes with great unhindered views of the fjord.

Arguably this hotel is rather a sterile affair but after spending nights in tired hotels in great locations (Balestrand & Fjaerland) it was nice to have somewhere that was a little more modern. The breakfast buffet was better than average too, with lots of fresh fruit which seems to be rare in Norway. Don't be put off by the nearby cabins and campsite. They don't spoil the view or the tranquillity. And you can rent motor boats and kayaks from them at reasonable prices. If you get a 10hp boat you can make it most of the way to Hellesylt and back in an hour if you go at full throttle!

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a high floor if possible. We were on the fifth floor and the views were superb.

We booked a room that had a view of the fiord which had a little balcony and the most wonderful outlook. Our room was clean and well presented. Buffet breakfast was good and we also had the buffet dinner which was reasonably priced for Norway and quite tasty. Wine as always was very expensive and 2 glasses each cost nearly as much as our dinner.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the fjord.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights in Room 501, which is on the far end and has a balcony. The breakfast and buffet dinner were delicious. The dining room has huge windows to take in the surrounding fjord wonderland. The coffee/tea station on the 6th floor was a nice convenience. The beds were too soft, and the windows did not have shades (only flimsy curtains), but you can't have everything. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the campground activity with a gorgeous backdrop.

The hotel is in a good location about 1 mile away from the centre and so away from the cruise ships that arrive and off load every day. All rooms have a view of the fjord. We ate there one night, a buffet with a good selection, breakfast was good too. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a balcony. We were surprised the curtains weren't lined as they had been elsewhere, especially as the nights are so short.
Would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: 5th floor - nice a quiet and great views.

The absolutely best thing about the Grande Fjord Hotel is its location on the edge of the Geiranger Fjord. Although not the centre of Geiranger the location more than weighed up for the extra 2 minute drive. The rooms very basic, but comfortable and all had balconies which was great considering the wonderful vista. We arrived at the hotel at 16.30 after a full day of sightseeing with beautiful weather, and asked if there was a terrace where we could relax and get some refreshment. We were told that the bar and even the lounge did not open until 17.30. At 18.00 we gave up and had to go to our respektive rooms to be able to relax before dinner. A good hotel that with a few additions could be a GREAT one.
