“Nice, but dated”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

Nice hotel with great views of the fjord - particularly from the restaurant on the top floor.
Room was big and spacious, although the bathroom was very small. Beds were a bit too soft for us - not quite comfortable.
Looks a bit old, and this is reflected in the very slow lift.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is close to a kayak rental place - Active Geiranger - which was convenient for us.
Parking is free, and it's a short drive to town, which worked very well for us.
Breakfast was ok - could do with a bit more fruit.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Grande Fjord Hotel in Geiranger. The fjord and town are wonderful and definitely worth at least 2-3 days. The rooms at the hotel were average in size, but had free wifi and were clean and quiet, with FABULOUS views from the balconies. The staff were very helpful, with lots of knowledge of the local sights and trails, and the breakfast and dinner buffets were excellent! The only downside is that the hotel is a 20minute walk from the main part of Geiranger along a road with no sidewalk. However a lot of services were available right there in the area around the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a fjord view room, for sure! Restaurant is on the 6th floor.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights in July 2014. First impressions are of a hotel that is clean and well maintained with friendly efficient staff. A lift is available to all floors. Our room was on the fifth floor with a balcony overlooking the fjord. You could not dream of a better view from a hotel balcony. Comfortable beds.

A self service buffet dinner of a very good quality and at a reasonable price was available on the sixth floor restaurant which again had magnificent views of the fjord. The chef came out to speak to guests at the end of the meal showing confidence in the quality of the food provided.

Breakfast was of a high standard.

We would return here when we are next in the area without question.

The fjord is a Unesco Heritage site. It is spectacular. The town itself, at the base of the fjord, is small and touristy. Huge cruise ships come for the day, ferries ply their trade, the souvenir shop makes a killing, eg a medium-sized bag of crisps costs £3.50. A mile away, built into the hillside, is the Grand fjord hotel, overlooking the water. Breathtaking !
Family-owned, friendly, with young, smiling summer staff ( the hotel is only for 3 months in the summer), it is clean and functional. Free parking and complementary tea and coffee are a bonus. Our 5th floor room, with balcony, had stunning views : Geiranger town to the left, and the rest of the fjord to the right. There is a small campsite at the bottom of the hotel, but it is smart and civilised; no noise at night. There was one downside for me. I am a light sleeper and the extractor fan outside our room at the end of the corridor, was noisy, even with the door shut. The owner could not understand what the fuss was about when I went down at midnight ( "no one has complained in 15 years"), and reluctantly turned it down to a lower setting. A little gruff, his son, however, the heir-apparent, is a charmer, works exceptionally hard and has a good grasp of customer care needs. Go and stay; the breakfasts are vast, and delicious, and the buffet dinners well worth it : very reasonable and in a dining room with unrivalled views.

Room Tip: Ask for a fjord view room as high up as possible. You probably wont find a better place to eat dinne...

We loved this hotel, especially the wonderful views overlooking the fjord. Our room had a balcony looking out onto the fjord and although the room was slightly dated it didn't prevent us from thoroughly enjoying our stay. The restaurant and breakfast were OK. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a fjord view

We had a great time at this hotel- we stayed two nights. The view was breathtaking and the room size was just perfect. We had a WONDERFUL meal at their buffet one night- The best meal on our 2 week trip. The staff were so friendly and helpful. On our last night the power went out- something that happens VERY rarely and usually only for an hour or two. It was out most of the night and only came on for an hour around 6am - then went out again. The staff were amazing and made breakfast in the one hour- it was ready for us in the buffet when we checked out. Our handmade receipt is one of our treasured souvenirs.

We used our car to go into town- the walk wasn't impossible (and we like to walk) but you needed to walk on the road and it just didn't make sense. As well, it rained on and off. The town is cute- unbelievably busy when the cruise ships come in with groups of people buying Trolls, Trolls and more Trolls. Once they left it was quiet and quaint. They have a great waterfall in town with steps and views that were great. There are wonderful walks nearby.

We would recommend this place to anyone in the area. Just great.

The view of the fjord is perfect. The hotel is situated outside the town but this is not a problem if you have a car. Lovely buffet breakfast and dinner. Will definitely stay here if I return to Geiranger!
